Yeah, Eugene has finally stumbled across what he does best. Not sure what that is, but he's funnier now.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 February 2011 19:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Eugene was on Colbert Monday night as a medical clown.

It is not 2011, but Paul F. Tompkins' "Impersonal" album is killing me lately.

Ha! I also like the picking cherries one and the peanut brittle one; both painfully drawn out, really, but I dig it.

RIP Mike DeStefano, dude was totally the funniest on the last season of Last Comic Standing and shoulda won

TIGER BLOOD aka the sheendriver (some dude), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 02:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Some mention of it earlier in the day on the podcast thread. I'd never heard him before (recognized the name only), but his interview with Maron was solid.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 02:44 (thirteen years ago) link

he had a very familiar tough guy New York comic exterior but his actual material was pretty dry and clever

how do wee feel about doug stanhope?

open jason segal (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 03:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Used to be I couldn't stand him. Now I don't even think about him anymore (like the rest of all people everywhere).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 03:41 (thirteen years ago) link

i saw destefano on a thing comedy central was showing that was like a comedy show for addicts? i think. i thought he was aight. RIP anyway, sounds like a fucked up story

little humma boy (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 03:42 (thirteen years ago) link

never been impressed what little of stanhope's comedy i've seen but i enjoyed his online rant about people who teach standup comedy, seems like a good writer

TIGER BLOOD aka the sheendriver (some dude), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 03:45 (thirteen years ago) link

has nothing to do w/ 2011 but i dl'ed jimmy pardo's pompous clown off itunes after patton raved abt it on a podcast & it's hysterical. is more or less entirely crowd work in pardo's kinda rickles-lite style

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 03:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I love Doug Stanhope. Kind of a poor man's Hicks I guess.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 04:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Not a Hicks fan either, so my Stanhope dislike makes sense in that respect.

http://www.deadline.com/2011/03/comedy-central-developing-evil-genius-comedy-starring-paul-f-tompkins/

omedy Central has put in development Evil Genius, a high-concept scripted comedy starring actor-comedian Paul F. Tompkins. The show, which Tompkins will write with Tom Scharpling (Monk), stars Tompkins as Professor Tiberius Lynch, an evil genius who has successfully taken over the world, achieving global domination. The only problem is -- what should he do next? Being a genius doesn't make it easier to navigate the everyday situations of office life, especially when that office is responsible for running absolutely everything on Earth. Lynch must contend with the quirks and foibles of his cohorts as well as the demands of the entire population of the planet, trying to pull off the ultimate balancing act.

Tompkins and Scharpling are executive producing Evil Genius with Avalon Television's David Martin, John Thoday and Richard Allen Turner. Tompkins, repped by CAA and Avalon Management, hosted VH1's Best Week Ever. Scharpling is with Rothman Brecher.

Doug Stanhope was horrible when he and Joe Rogan took over the Man Show, but I don't think anybody could have saved that.

His appearances on Newswipe last year were quite good, tho.

Crazed Mister Handy (kingfish), Friday, 11 March 2011 17:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Tompkins is brilliant imo -- up there with Patton Oswalt as one of the few comics working today who just seems like a wordsmith who could've done something interesting in any number of formats if he hadn't gone into standup

Pete Holmes and Rory Scovel were pretty great.

I kinda like Todd Glass

His Comedy Central standup from like 10 years ago was incredible. Like, nearly a perfect blend of great jokes and dry meta-humor. He mocked other comics in a Neil Hamburger type way but really was funny besides. I got his two stand up discs and they're pretty terrible. The first one has bits of that routine as well as a bunch of fake songs and bits that don't even try to be funny. On his second one he basically just loses his edge entirely and talks about some pretty awkward subjects. But I have to listen to that one again. Weird guy and I hope he finds work.

ah crap I was going to tivo the Kinane/Oliver thing..

VegemiteGrrl, Friday, 25 March 2011 21:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Saw some of an old Daniel Tosh standup special on CC about 2-3 months ago and was surprised how funny I found it ("No, I don't want to smoke a bowl; I'm not 17, I have things to do. Grow up and do coke"). Didn't really catch any racist stuff there or on the clip show, but I don't see it much. He just seems to be doing for gay-seeming, fuckable blond dudes what Sarah Silverman did for JAPs.

His new stand up is pretty good but he really gets off on the wrong foot. One of his first jokes was about how illegal immigrants should be able to serve on jury duty so that criminals can truly be judged by "a jury of their peers"...I can see finding that funny, but my wife is Mexican and needless to say she really DID NOT like that at all. You really have to be on board with his persona to not get pissed at his shtick. That said, he seems to understand the way comedy works better than 90% of the comedians working today.

frogbs, Friday, 25 March 2011 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

saw stanhope the other night and absolutely loved it. i haven't laughed so much in a long time. probably my favourite working stand-up.

^ consecutive posts about comedians I hate. Hooray!

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 March 2011 21:50 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm watching this show on comedy central called "mash-up" & i guess the deal is that the stand up is intercut w/ visual representations of the story that the guy is telling -- i'm not exactly sure if it's a one off thing or what idk -- anyway it's hannibal burress stand up so i'm not complaining

J0rdan S., Friday, 1 April 2011 07:54 (thirteen years ago) link

this guy is so fucking funny btw

i really enjoyed norm macdonald's recent stand-up special. i'd forgotten how funny just his cadence alone is.

major fashion inspiration (reddening), Friday, 1 April 2011 09:07 (thirteen years ago) link

norm's one of those guys who was instrumental in convincing me that like 50% of being a good standup is having a funny voice.

One of his first jokes was about how illegal immigrants should be able to serve on jury duty so that criminals can truly be judged by "a jury of their peers

This earns him an "ignore forever" from me. Not that he gives a shit, but it's nice to have such clear-cut reasons to whittle down the list of things in the world one wants to pay attention to.

Had tickets to see Norm live last Friday. Got all the way to the venue only to find a note posted on the door saying that it had been rescheduled. Why didn't Ticketmaster send an email. So angry making. grrr. It's not all bad though - he's coming back in July.

Totally...I don't know of anyone else who could have pulled what he did at the Bob Saget roast. I mean even the whole "bombing on purpose" angle is really overstating it because everyone seemed to love it. "How do you not get that?" Such a classic..

Norm's Saget roast was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I think if i was there live, i would have died

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 1 April 2011 13:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Agreed.

His stand-up special was pretty great as well. "Do you know how often men REALLY think about sex? Every once in a while. That's a phrase scientists don't like".

Maybe it wasn't "every once in a while" but you get the point.

dan selzer, Friday, 1 April 2011 14:37 (thirteen years ago) link

you know, when you withhold pleasure from the audience, that's more performance art than comedy (see Andy Kaufman).

We had a name circa 1990 for trying to get laughs from other comics, it was OPEN MIKE NIGHT.

gilbert gottfriend used to do a bit sort of like that, a long time ago.

"so i just flew in from fort worth and boy... was the food bad on that plane. it was TERRIBLE! then i got into my rental car it TALKED to me! what's that about? I LOVE YA NEW YORK"

Gilbert was one of the comics on stage who was in stitches throughout.
