Myspace had animated GIFs, i remember that. So lame you can't use them on FB tho.

Egyptian parents are naming their kids “Facebook” to commemorate the events surrounding the #Jan25 revolution.

fb recommended i friend someone whom i had told a funny story about to a friend the night before -- don't think fb is accessing my phone conversations.

i said it on the Egypt thread and i'll say it again here: there's something comforting about how universal lousy parenting is.

On the baby-name blog where I first saw that news, someone posited that "Facebook" might not sound that strange amid common Egyptian names like Falak and Farouk.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 22:07 (fifteen years ago)
Then again, I don't think the objections to it are necessarily based on aesthetics.

A "friend" keeps befriending more and more friends every day, and this tiny little row of thumbnail mugs appears on my page.
Instead of an actual picture of themselves, one of his new acquaintances has a photograph of Megan McCain with her mouth duct-taped, from that tolerance campaign.
And each time I see it, I think "Who are these freaks?" before I realize what it is.
― Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:29 (fifteen years ago)
so now you have to hit the return/enter key to submit a comment. meaning you can't submit replies with more than one paragraph or even just a new line?
― jed_, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 23:23 (fifteen years ago)
Hoping that's just a temporary bug, but maybe it isn't.
I'll be damned if I'm going to type out a comment in notepad first before pasting it to someone's facebook comment thread.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 23:28 (fifteen years ago)
why are you guys composing multiparagraph messages on facebook
― max, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 23:33 (fifteen years ago)
Sometimes you have to get into debates with friends and/or friends of friends on certain status updates. I got into a whopper about Bradley Manning last week with some ex-military/total conservative knobs on a high school friend's page.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 23:36 (fifteen years ago)
i think the end of the "submit" button might be gods way of telling you not to do that
― max, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 23:37 (fifteen years ago)
My reshare of a Planned Parenthood post to not cut family planning funding set off a flamewar on my page between two pro-lifers and basically the rest of the world.
To be fair, I kind of walked away and they were commenting for two more days. I didn't even skim it until a week or two later.
― mh, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 23:45 (fifteen years ago)

I keep my friends diverse enough that there's got to be at least one person breaking the law, on unemployment, converting to Catholicism, gutterpunk, engaged, gay, married, going through a divorce, high, or rich. Life is a rich tapestry.

I eventually end up deleting or being deleted by friends with whom there are constant clashes.
The only time it really hurt was when an old friend who's since turned into an ultra-Xtian defriended me after sending me a message about how she was sad that she had to choose Jesus over me.
