i love this show but i do kind of hate that all sitcoms now have to have big character arcs, which inevitably lead to everyone dating each other, love triangles, etc. i kind of miss how in old sitcoms, everything would reset with each episode and no one ever changed.

I'm with n/a on the character arc thing. For most sitcoms you can kind of understand it, because the workplace is just another crappy set for characters to tell jokes on, but Pawnee and its government is almost a character of its own. It seems so rich with potential stories, it doesn't need these constant who's-gonna-hook-up plots (nor does it need two seasons devoted to the construction of one playground for that matter).

lol at using a show that uses as its main recurring theme the on-off relationship of two of its central characters as an example of something that doesn't use ongoing relationships between its central characters to further character arcs

I can't be bothered by the love trapezoid. This show has long since outclassed the rest of NBC Thurs. & last night's ep was the hardest I've lolled @ a sitcom since certain episodes of Louie last year. I like that the writers seem to be taking the Dennis Duffy approach w/ Tammy by bringing her into the narrative just often enough to keep her & Ron's awesome lunacy from settling into schtick.

Can I say that the "interview portions" that occur, like the one with Rashida Jones while she was out on the date with Rob Lowe, are sort of jarring?
Those bother me more than relationship story arcs.

^ mentioned it before but the docu aspect is increasingly nonsensical and could easily be dropped altogether. also the increase of dating/relationship plots always smacks of network execs interfering cuz of low ratings

that's why a show like 30 rock is in such a good position because they can go anywhere and do anything. if they drop flyboy or whoever it doesn't really matter. it pays to be nonsensical.

same with community really. parks and rec is KINDA like that. people have come and gone. rob lowe probably won't stick around forever. and henry party down needs a better vehicle anyway. he should be the star of the temps show that party down dude is doing.

I'd like to see Adam Scott do a go-for-broke lunatic asshole. I like him fine in Parks & Party Down, but he was brilliant in Eastbound & Down and Stepbrothers.

community had the jeff/britta/annie love triangle in s1 but they do seem to have toned it down somewhat. but now they've got the chang/shirley baby storyline happening

the calzone thing was just kinda uhhhh

adam scott is good when he's on and i still think him and lowe are a great addition to the show, but P&R is already starting to feel overstuffed, like they want to an ensemble show but instead of using the whole ensemble you just have a whole bunch of rotating 2-3 person scenes crammed together.

they're basically just putting him in the paul schneider straight man role, which is kind of a shame. similar to rashida jones, they're hiring funny actors and then giving them reaction roles.

The calzone thing might (I stress, might)be funny if you remember that the show is set in small town Indiana where calzones might be thought of as exotic and (therefore) unappetizing "foreign" food. Probably an unfair midwestern stereotype, but we are talking sitcom matertial here.

if they were consistent with that "small town life is xenophobic and different is weird" schtick i might buy into it, but have you noticed the small metrosexual brown guy who seems to get along with everyone in the town?

calzone thing was just an absurdist "everyone hates calzones except adam scott for no good reason" joke, not that complicated

it was making a point, ie calzones are just pizza in a less convenient format.

The small metrosexual brown guy works hard at it, though. Calzones just sit there waiting to be loved. But n/a, et al have it right, irrational hate of perfectly OK thing is funny.

xps.. and yeah, especially funny when Leslie blew up at the end and psyched out Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott) at the end. props to Leslie, she had me fooled

best moment of episode was probably the reveal of Jerry eating the cupcake at the bridal shower.

Being a lifelong New Yorker (I grew up in Northern California and live in Los Angeles), when Entertainment Weekly called and begged me to be on the cover of their magazine (the show I’m on, Parks and Rec, was going to be on the cover, and thus I would ride its coattails) and that the shoot would be anywhere but Manhattan, I, of course, said no (yes).
To even consider leaving my fair city (I’ve never lived here) makes me literally vomit (not literally, actually not at all). So the decision was easy: I’d triumphantly stay in New York (I’m working on a movie here, and due to a giant storm, all flights were cancelled) while my fellow castmates mug it up in EW (I’m a subscriber). Victory (devastation)!!!
