not really 'news' I guess

teds is cool. i kinda have weird fuzzies for that place on divis right off haight (maybe kingfoot? haven't been there in years). f ikes.

jaxon, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 05:45 (fifteen years ago)

The place on Irving and 7th? 6th? is pretty good IIRC. Yellow Submarine, I think.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 12:25 (fifteen years ago)

Kingfoot's good, so is Yellow Submarine. Gambino's in the Embarcadero.

first choice would have been Mastrelli's in the Ferry Bldg, which is gone now unfortunately :(

The sandwiches at Molinari's are great but I don't think they're quite the sub you mean.

Lucca deli

it's time for the fish in the perculator (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

does anything special go on July 4 weekend? seems like a good place to avoid boilerplate jingoism.

your generation appalls me (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

Lucca's good too, Steve.

You mean here in SF, Morbs? We usually have our patented glowing fog on July 4th.

Si tu parles, tu meurs. Si tu te tais, tu meurs. Alors, dis et (Michael White), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

the Mission pretty much explodes on July 4th, since we're the only neighborhood without any fog. Between 9 and 11 it's nonstop guerilla fireworks, for the most part

in my world of loose geirs (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

I usually go hang in Sausalito w/my family. Dunphy Park has a totally corny, family-oriented 4th of July celebration but it's vaguely hippyish and not at all jingoistic. If you're lucky, you can see Sausalito, Berkeley and SF's fireworks.

Si tu parles, tu meurs. Si tu te tais, tu meurs. Alors, dis et (Michael White), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

last year, i was on the roof of my then-boyfriend's building in downtown Oakland, and we could see the fireworks in Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, San Rafael, San Francisco, and San Bruno. it was totally amazing.

Dude did you watch thar video?? That toothpick thing is one of the most delightful things I've ever fucking seen.

ToeJam & Lewis (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 24 April 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i did watch it. but jello is delicious.

eating california rolls of a dude's taint (the table is the table), Sunday, 24 April 2011 21:49 (fifteen years ago)

I gotta side with Stevie...jello is delicious and all, but the toothpick sculpture is incredible.

VegemiteGrrl, Sunday, 24 April 2011 21:56 (fifteen years ago)

but....i guess that i am more on the side of 'realism' in depictions of my delightful area, and while the toothpick thing is amazing, i am more into how incredibly real-looking the jello stuff is. i mean, even if i just saw a picture of it without context, i would say, "THAT IS THE BAY BRIDGE MADE OUT OF JELLO HOLY SHIT"

eating california rolls of a dude's taint (the table is the table), Sunday, 24 April 2011 22:01 (fifteen years ago)

the jello is cool looking but still seems like 'artist uses gimmick to get press' whereas the toothpick guy is more 'crazy dude in basement who would be doing this with his free time even if nobody cared'...which I find much more respectable, really

iatee, Sunday, 24 April 2011 22:41 (fifteen years ago)

and toothpick guy's work is sentimental which appeals more to me, plus the whimsy of the ball things

I have a very, very weak spot for Rube Goldberg contraptions, also.

ToeJam & Lewis (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 25 April 2011 03:49 (fifteen years ago)

me too

VegemiteGrrl, Monday, 25 April 2011 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

I have overdosed on hipster Rube Goldberg contraptions recently (yes, this is a thing) but this dude redeems the genre.

well there haven't been any since the ILBB bludgeoning began.

I'm creeping toward booking July 2-6, rather than after SoCal.

Any recommendations for vegetarian-friendly places that are close to a BART station?

NoShoutsNoCalls (Leee), Saturday, 30 April 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

I like this place, lots of faux-meat:

think I'll be staying in the Lower Haight this time, as the closing of the Eagle has sounded SOMA's death knell

Any recommendations for vegetarian-friendly places that are close to a BART station?

Always trust Shasta, but I prefer Enjoy over Golden Era in the fake-meat Chinese game. Their Kearny street location isn't too far from the Powell and Montgomery stations: http://www.enjoyveggie.com/

Near 16th and Mission:
- Gracias Madre (straight-up great mexican that happens to be organic/vegan): http://www.gracias-madre.com/web/
- Udupi Palace (killer South Indian. Order the paper dosa for dinner and a show): http://www.udupipalaceca.com/
- Also Cha-Ya for Japanese but they're closed indefinitely :(

Near Civic Center.
- Ananda Fuara. Little more old-school veg menu but tasty and they're total sweethearts: http://www.anandafuara.com/

Those a are all vegetarian or vegan. If you open it up to veg-friendly, the list gets... um... pretty extensive.

Wow good recommendations, I will have to check out Enjoy. I should say that Golden Era offers more Vietnamese (ethnic Chinese) flavors at first glance in comparison.

Cha-Ya I would shy away from, that place was bizarre, I could never figure out what they were trying to do.

Ananda Fuara I haven't been to in years but aside from the food (which I enjoyed), perhaps they've toned down the cult-y aspect? They put on the hard sell on their ashram (?) to me last time, kinda scared me off.

it's time for the fish in the perculator (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

Haha I have been to Enjoy years ago on a lunch date, yeah it was good.

I really dislike Udupi Palace. Maybe Vik's has spoiled me?

Morbs, Lower Haight is much better than SoMa imho. Same hood where we met you the last time couple times you were here (Toronado and Madrone?)

it's time for the fish in the perculator (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

Golden Era is totally culty

jaxon, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 18:14 (fifteen years ago)

T/S:

Pamphlets on the counter when you walk in

vs.

Multiple staff members surrounding your table insisting you pay visit to their ashram

yes, I'll be staying near Toronado, I think, and also the Independent, where Ted Nugent is playing that week.

lol jaxon OTM wrt golden era though really the only thing that bothers me is the TV screens in the dining area.

re: ananda fuara they've toned it down then. Haven't been since 2008 but I got nothing stronger from the staff than good vibes. Think there may have been some postcards of, like, sri chinmoy performing feats of strength or something.
