jon seriously if you are this earnest and enthusiastic about things all the time, i'm not sure you're doing the internet right

yeah what we need are more people "doing the internet right" please

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 4 February 2011 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

The little darth pushing past his father was pretty funny.

Evan, Friday, 4 February 2011 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

jon seems super sensitive but i agree Whiney is kind of a http://blog.mrhacks.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/comic_book_guy.jpg version of the cool police here.

Evan, Friday, 4 February 2011 16:49 (fifteen years ago)

I feel like I temporarily lock half the threads I post in.

Evan, Friday, 4 February 2011 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

ppl are probably just burnt out on this thread

markers, Friday, 4 February 2011 18:27 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i mean mixed feelings, obviously whiney can be utterly insufferable when he gets on some "this is the internet, son" ish, but otoh u start a poll thread about a car commercial with a leading title, you gotta be prepared for some heat.

call all destroyer, Friday, 4 February 2011 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

christ @ this commercial. it's hard to believe anyone still has any fondness for the Star Wars brand (which is all it is) anymore. the costume the kid is wearing is probably like a $400 replica - that's the kind of shit that will get a kid's ass kicked by other kids. spoiled rich kid. and... wouldn't a kid that age be into something other than star wars? whatever little kids are into right now. oh yeah, i guess i'm supposed to be the little kid AND the parents, huh?

Uh, I've seen pretty much that exact kid's Darth Vader costume at Target for like $30. And kids are VERY into Star Wars, like you would not believe. Everyone I know who has kids, those kids have "Clone Wars" toys and video games up the wazoo.

bien-penisant vibrator (Phil D.), Friday, 4 February 2011 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

damn, rockapads -- did C3PO bang your mom or something?

no beans, push to fart (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 February 2011 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

lol

rockapads, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

it's more that george lucas banged my childhood memories, i guess

rockapads, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

to channel patton oswalt

rockapads, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think there is that much an emphasis on the Star Wars brand in this ad- it could be a kid playing pirate or cowboy or something else, but obviously it is about him using the "force" to control things, and how silly it looks to have a tiny kid decked out in a full Darth costume.

Evan, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

btw, what feature of the 2012 passat is this commercial specifically advertising? that you can make the lights flash remotely? or did i miss something?

no beans, push to fart (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 February 2011 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

That you can turn it on remotely.

Jeff, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

oh i guess the car turns on? haven't cars been doing that for like 5 years

no beans, push to fart (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 February 2011 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

yeah

no beans, push to fart (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 February 2011 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

i would just like to point out that whiney has been otm on this thread

history mayne, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

carry the torch, brother

no beans, push to fart (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 February 2011 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

it kind of writes itself

some guy thinks a volkswagen ad that references 'star wars' is the cutest shit ever...

history mayne, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously, wtf is with the Whiney defenders? I mean, really, is this how you want the internet to be handled? This place is turning into a gigantic fucking circle jerk of bitterness and trying to out-"clown" each other. If thats what people want this place to be, so be it, I'm obviously the one out of step here. I think its time I bowed away from ILX, which is a shame, because there is quite a few people and ongoing threads here I will actively miss. It just seems like the balance has tipped from a cool place where lots of intelligent people talk about music to some insular world where we all need to constantly clown earnestness and excitement to make sure exude the proper aura of "doing the internet right".

Fwiw, I'm not calling Whiney an asshole because of this thread, it just happened to be a place to vent about his rampant shitty attitude in general, short of starting a whole new thread about it. I'm sure you guys will consider this some sort of victory for having chased off someone who doesn't "post right" or whatever, so enjoy it, I guess.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 4 February 2011 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

Btw I think the commercial's "adorableness" has nothing to do with Star Wars, I love the kids gestures and excitement at role-playing.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 4 February 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

xxpost: ... some other guy with a "hipster puppies" tumblr claims that passing around links to cute shit is 'doing the internet wrong'...

proso_Opopoeia (bernard snowy), Friday, 4 February 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

lit's true whiney vomits bile on a timer but he didn't like this commercial & u took it personally. why are ppl who like cute things so often eggshells armed with hammers?

ps whiney is banned now

zvookster, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

Again, because you can't seem to understand, this whole issue has next to noghing to do with this thread - it just happens to be the location where an ongoing issue came to a head.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 4 February 2011 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

pick yr battles imo

zvookster, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

you should just stick around and try to not engage with what you consider to be the hostile aspects of ilx. i would like to imagine that folks would tone it down a notch tbh but even if they don't it's not difficult to avoid 'em.

omar little, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

Whiney doesn't bother me that much. He's never approached s1ocki levels of shitting on threads. But it's all on a continuum. Annoyance at all levels.

Jeff, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

Also, j/v/c, please don't leave.

Jeff, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

ha, jon's post reminds me of something from like 08 when watercooler types were campaigning to get dom permabanned

no beans, push to fart (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 February 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

To be clear, I don't want to ban Whiney. I just want him to stop being so willfully dickish to people. Considering his book, he's obviously a smart guy with great things to say. I just wish he'd approach posting here with the same attitude.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 4 February 2011 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

not really sure when this golden age was

anyway, bye!!!! have fun!!!!!

history mayne, Friday, 4 February 2011 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

when a thread titled: "Is this the most adorable commercial ever?" gets no snark it is time to leave ilx/the internet/the planet.

If you honestly thought I was on some Jean Teasdale type shit with this thread title, well, I don't know what to tell you other than to maybe look up "tongue-in-cheek" on wikipedia.

Thats what happened to this thread

Evan, Friday, 4 February 2011 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

Jon, try and just tune out the people you don't like. Whiney has a schtick, and sometimes it's funny and useful, and sometimes it's boring and prickish, but don't get aggravated by it - it's pretty harmless. Easy for me to say, maybe, because the only two posters I genuinely hated have both gone, but good advice nonetheless.

I'm assuming this is a very deadpan joke.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Friday, 4 February 2011 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

In my (very slight) defense, it came after an episode in which he was following me into various threads to post a picture of Jeff Tweedy after everything I said.

this was a pretty cute commercial

basedketball (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 February 2011 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

for what it's worth, i wasn't trying to defend anybody with my post, I just didn't like the commercial. I don't mind that other people like it or anything.

rockapads, Friday, 4 February 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

lol Bill

i never did that, btw
