Why are Liverpool fans so obsessed with plastic flags? It's just weird. Who the hell makes flags out of plastic anyway?

So are the fees involved confirmed? If so Chelsea spend £71 million, City £27 million, Liverpool £2 million, Arsenal, Spurs , Man Utd nothing. What a mad day. I usually still root for ex 'Pool players when they leave (except for Michael Owen) but gonna find it hard with Nando at Chelsea. Oh well, think he'll do well, although as Pete W says hard to see where they're going to play him. Drogba's gotta play in the centre surely, so Torres off the left? Right? I don't think he's 'lost' whatever it is he had and I think he'll be vital in Champs Lge this year.
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Tuesday, 1 February 2011 13:34 (fifteen years ago)
City didn't spend anything yesterday did they? If you're talking about the whole window then Spurs paid £2.5m for Pienaar and got a load of dead wood off the wage bill, albeit temporarily. But still not great from our point of view.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 13:42 (fifteen years ago)
I'm not so sure xp, his main thing was his pace and I fear rafa might've ruined him. He never got the good long rest he really needed imo. The great things he's done in the past season-and-a-half have just been too sporadic to form a view - that first goal against Chelsea is the only thing I can recall that only a top-form Torres could do, and it's always possible that he just caught Terry or whoever off-balance or on a bad day. We've seen nothing like the sheer terror of Vidic in that purple patch.
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 13:43 (fifteen years ago)
Good question, maybe I've missed it, but I've not heard the most obvious question asked to Torres: What position were you bought for?
xp

Interesting text exchange in the comments section here.
Some interesting reading here with the transcripts sent between Carroll and ToonTalk fanzine editor Steve Wraith -
I have known Andy Carroll for 6 years and he is a great lad. A Newcastle fan at heart and someone who dreamt of wearing the NO.9 shirt at St James. He was proud to follow in Alan Shearer footsteps.I was with him with my mate Chris Liddle after the Sunderland game and he was adamant that he was staying and that a move did not interest him. Yesterdays events happened so quickly and I was stuck in the maelstrom of one of the biggest transfers in British history. This wasn\’t a set up. These texts have been made public with Andy\’s permission and I\’m happy to help my mate. I have helped set up his only interview which will break later today.Ask yourself what you would do in Andys position? A club that has already said they intend to buy young players and sell on at a profit. Football is a short career and you have to look after yourself in this world. This move was not engineered by Andy. He is a small cog in a big wheel. He is a rising star with a bigger pay packet now. As a fellow Gateshead lad I wish him all the best and will welcome him back to Newcastle anytime. I hope other fans will do the same. Good luck mate.
Here is a transcript of the texts that i made and received.
Sunday 30th January 14:37SW: Are you leaving mate?AC: I\’m not going anywhere mate.
Monday 31st January 16:28
SW: Liverpool in for you mate. Any truth in that?AC: Dunno what\’s happening yet still mate. Thanks.
17:02SW: Sky Sports say it\’s a matter of time mate. What\’s club said?AC: they have kind of said we don\’t want u but want me to say I wanna go. And I said I don\’t want to go.
17:26
SW: Have you put in a transfer request?AC: No I didn\’t that\’s what I mean that\’s what they wanted me to do and I said no.
17:27
SW: So they want you to go?AC: They said they wanted to accept it.
17:28
SW: So you have no choice?AC: Looks like it.
17:31SW: Your agent will be doing ok out of this. When you going?AC: I don\’t know mate. Gutted tho.
17:32SW: Any message you want put across to the fans? I\’m happy to do that for you mate.AC: They said they wanted the money.
17:37
SW: Anything else?AC: Gutted to be leaving Newcastle but I was kind of pushed out the door.
17:41SW: That it?AC: Just what i\’ve just said really. Gutted to be leaving my home club but I was practically told to go. Didn\’t want to leave that\’s why i signed a 5 year deal.
17:47SW: I will pass these onto the press lads I know.AC: Sound mate.
17:56SW: Can you give press lads a call to do an interview when deal done?AC: I will yeah. I will speak to him later. Bit busy atm mate.

David Moyes, the Everton manager, felt that the bid was one of the most insulting he had received in his career."We have had an offer from Tottenham of £250,000, which we received onSaturday afternoon," he said. "Then it was upped to £500,000 on Mondaymorning. That is insulting. It was £250,000 now and £250,000 paid in ayear's time.

Pardew claims that when the bid came in Carroll asked for improved terms on the 5 year contract he signed in OCTOBER. Newcastle said no, he put in the transfer request. So he wanted more money and Newcastle not too crushed by selling him is my take on it.
xp to Matt DC - forgot about Pineear and it was only last week!

Shame that Carroll seems unhappy to be at Liverpool. Like I was saying yesterday, I'd much prefer him to get his head down and work hard at living up to the hype than Gazza-ing/Denilson-ing but if he plays like he talks, I guess Liverpool have just got a taller version of last year's Torres.

£1 for the most exciting youngster a whole continent can offer would be quite the coup.

Think that Carroll objection can be read as "I don't want to go but Ashley won't offer me a bigger contract".

Don't see the problem myself - if he feels slighted by Newcastle, then great, it doesn't mean he won't be up for Liverpool. I really hope the club have some scheme to occupy his time though.

Is Torres washed up? Havent seen enough of him this season to be sure, but he was woeful in the WC. His injury record actually compares with Drogba and Rooney, so not sure how big a deal that is. But do wonder where he will play - Lampard cannot really play diamond and we're not set up for a flatter midfield four. It's a real issue - the whole CFC formation is set up to get best out of FL and nobody has managed to workout an alternative. Torres was clearly a vanity signing - unless he is being signed with a view to replacing DD next season - as the thing we still lack is a creative right-sided player. Perhaps McEachran is the long-term answer, although Carlo tends to play him rather too deep for my liking.Chelsea have an atrocious record with expensive strikers - Fleck, Furlong, Casiraghi, Sutton and Shevchenko - so I'm happily expecting the worst. Defence is sorted for next five years tho.

They are going to have reduce wage bill pretty drastically again, so could see DD moving on for one last payday. All the big names tied to long term contracts except Ivanovic and Anelka as far as i know.
