And speaking of space weapons, I always thought the 928 was probably based on the Millenium Falcon:

omg that Prowler is even uglier than I remembered.

Re: AMC. I love all those weirdo cars they designed in the 1970s. If I had the means, I'd make a documentary about them while all or most of the designers are still alive.

^^^otm & would watch

i kind of think that '86 unveiling of the fucking Taurus was the point where Ford (and American auto makers in general) just said "fuck it, trucks & SUV's are where it's at. We'll put the 'B' team designers on the shitty mid-priced sedans. I doubt anyone will buy them anyhow."

but buy them my parents did. over and over and over...

my god that '81 mustang is depressing.

The 928 is residue of great Porsche design.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 December 2008 21:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I loved that Porsche as a kid. Never liked the 911.

Panhard made some strange cars. Here's the P 17

Okay but the 928 is kind of great. I don't know about the other angles but I'm enjoying the side view.

Agreed. Same with the 944.

It's the 914 I don't like...

I think I've only ever seen one of these on the street in the US, and am only familiar with it from browsing the model kit aisles in K-Mart as a kid:

The Opel GT is not by any means an ugly car, but doing this to one should be a criminal act punishable by 20 years or more in prison...

Yeah, it's definitely a love/hate model.

I'm not sure how I feel about the new Porsche Panamera. Admittedly, I strongly believe that Porsche should NOT be making a four-door anything.

The angle on that Cadillac Seville makes it look almost normal, you got to get the back end in to see the full horror...

the porsche cayenne is ugly too, but i'm biased against SUVs anyway.

I'm going to jump in for the Lebaron. They've always reminded me of little fedoras.

Srsly, WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF VINYL RIGHT AT THE VERY BACK OF A CAR'S ROOF? I don't get it.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 December 2008 21:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Just about every Caddy made after 1965 is ugly.

The current "stealth fighter" design aesthetic Cadillac has now isn't terrible, though I think it'll look dated pretty quickly. I'm not a big fan of the CTS sedan (even though it's a terrific car), but I saw the new CTS wagon at the LA Auto Show last weekend and I think it's a big improvement

I still stand by my previous assertion re: Caddys.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 December 2008 21:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I can't find a picture to do it justice, but when I was car-shopping this past August, the lot full of unsold 2008 Ford F-150s and F-250s seemed like the ugliest thing ever.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 4 December 2008 21:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I think I've only ever seen one of these on the street in the US, and am only familiar with it from browsing the model kit aisles in K-Mart as a kid:

Ah, Merkur. That was Ford's attempt to compete with BMW and Mercedes in the US, by importing German-made Fords and giving them a German-sounding name. Didn't work.

Omnis, Colts & LeCars (which I actually sorta like) have nothing on the early-to-mid-90s Geo Metro, easily the most turdish of all unfortunate sub-compacts IMO:
