That bastion of reliable news reporting Fox News is now reporting that Newcastle have caved in on Carroll. If they sell him and get relegated then Ashley will look like one of the biggest numpties in Premiership history.

Matt DC, Monday, 31 January 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

x-post i stopped believing that that argument was rubbish a long time ago, i suggest you do the same.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

Also I'd like to think the great difference is that i'm not a racist or homophobe or sexist like seemingly most people on football message boards.

sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

yeah - he handed in a transfer request about half an hour ago - being off sick from work on TDD is really great/awful.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

Don't really get why LFC so desperate to spend their cash. We won't go down, we won't come 4th. If they've been evaluating things over the last few months and decided the way forward is Carroll and they desperately want him fair enough, but if it's more that they feel they have to show the fans something other then selling perhaps out best player then I wish they wouldn't bother.

1726: BREAKING NEWS: LIVERPOOL ANNOUNCE THEY HAVE AGREED A FEE FOR NEWCASTLE STRIKER ANDY CARROLL

Cars and Freedom (Noodle Vague), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

Basically, I know I am just a person on a message board who will not make an ounce of difference. Doesn't mean I cannot criticise someone for an act of stupidity though. Or more importantly lol at it and encourage such ridiculous behaiviour for future lols.

sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

Newcastle won't go down, come on. xpost.

sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

Good move for Carroll I think, he needs to get away from the pressure cooker atmosphere of Newcastle and into a club where expectations are lower and his opportunities for partying and other shenanigans will be severely limited.

Cars and Freedom (Noodle Vague), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

LOL

^ lol

What is this about Anelka and Sturridge that they are chuntering on about on Sky News. Were they offered to Liverpool as part of the Torres deal (yes, I know, Sturridge is at Chelsea! Who knew?)

ailsa, Monday, 31 January 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

a left back would be nice.

The referee was perfect (Chris), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

"Just spoke to Gerard Houllier: Stephen Ireland move to Newcastle still ON despite rumours of a failed medical, Aston Villa and Newcastle in talks as we speak. Michael Bradley is a "done deal" and Ashley Young is "100% staying".

Guess they need the Carroll money to pay for Ireland?

sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

i'm more worried about suarez not signing or the long delay in it finally being confirmed than i am about them spending so much on carroll. his wages prob won't be huge plus somebody on min by min pointing out fsg just spent 142m dollars on a baseball player, kinda puts it in perspective. if they can afford to spend big then so be it. if it's a case of only spending big cos of torres going then this is a bigger risk.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

a left back would be nice.

Been saying that for 18 months. It's okay tho, we've signed Adriano Basso on loan to the end of the season as a 3rd string keeper. Relegation zone is shook.

Cars and Freedom (Noodle Vague), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

For all the lols about lack of expectation etc Pretty good time to come to LFC really. Him and Suarez get 4 months of relatively pressure free football. Won't be like that the rest of their time at Anfield.

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

Think £35mn for Carroll in 2011 is only slightly more looney than £8.5mn for the sex pest mentalist in 1995.

James Mitchell, Monday, 31 January 2011 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

Come on, he'll be lucky to get 40 minutes of "pressure free" football.

As long as his leg's not really fucked tho he'll be more use to you than Torres now I think.

Cars and Freedom (Noodle Vague), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

carroll will become one of the world's finest right sided carthorses under big dirk's expert tutelage, mark my words.

r|t|c, Monday, 31 January 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

his wages prob won't be huge

If he's going to become the record British transfer surely he and his agent would likely expect wages commensurate with that.

my Bébé just cares for me (onimo), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

Assuming he can play with one of those electronic tags round his ankle, like.

Cars and Freedom (Noodle Vague), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

SSN reporting his wages will be in the region of £80k a week.

ailsa, Monday, 31 January 2011 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

I meant pressure free in comparison to if he came at the start of the season when hope springs eternal, can we finish fourth etc etc. Rather than mid season with nothing to play for scenario.

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

Don't see how a comparison with baseball "kinda puts it in perspective" or justifies spending 35m for Carroll. It's completely ridiculous.

rafa's probably sitting at home, tearfully dreaming of the midfield of three gareth barrys that would have led him to glory.

r|t|c, Monday, 31 January 2011 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

Guardian Twitter reporting Charlie Adam going for £14m. That'll help Rangers' debt problems at least.

ailsa, Monday, 31 January 2011 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

The baseball thing will be over the course of dude's contract yeah? So what $142 million over like 7 or 8 years.

No biggie then. Man U pay that to keep John O'Shea hanging around for domestic cup games.

Does that mean Holloway has to resign again?

The Soccernomics authors can put out a whole new chapter in the next edition based solely on the past five hours since lunchtime.

James Mitchell, Monday, 31 January 2011 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

Okay the only way this gets stupider is if LFC don't sell Torres and get round our lack of left back by setting out 3-4-3 every game as if we were Chile with Carroll, Torres, and Suarez up front :)

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

i meant if they're completely loaded then maybe they are prepared to pay over the odds in this instance...even over 7 years 142m dollars is a lot of money.

like they are obv doubly hit with it being an english player, and the transfer window. but they've also obv decided they need a striker. it's a crazy amount of money but part of me is just glad the club can actually fucking buy players and at least it's not servicing debts or whatever.

Maybe that helicopter will touch down at Anfield just after midnight and Mourinho steps out in front of the Sky Sports News cameras, wearing a £35mn scarf.

TORRES IN A HELICOPTER _DRUDGE_SIREN_

James Mitchell, Monday, 31 January 2011 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

Various sources have maintained that the real reason Ireland left the squad was down to his team-mates reaction to his hairpiece. A group of them, led by Stephen Hunt, pinned him to the floor and tried to rip off his wig, revealing his hairline. The banter had turned into bullying, and the story says a lot about the mentality of professional footballers. Ireland has never played for the national team since, and by summer 2008 he had ditched the wig and gone shaven headed bald.

^^ Is this bit of the Stephen Ireland origin story widely reported? I can't remember where I first heard it but I think it involved more Andy Reid.

Bad Fucking Dowie (Sgt. Biscuits), Monday, 31 January 2011 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

yeah this was reported loads at the time. it was robbie keane that held him down i thought tho. great job captain keane.

just banter rears its ugly head once more

Rossi £30 million to Spurs? Surely not. How much did Man U sell him for?

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Monday, 31 January 2011 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

Liverpool fans burning Torres shirts live on Sky Sports News just now.

James Mitchell, Monday, 31 January 2011 18:50 (fifteen years ago)

Oh God really? FFS. He came from his boyhood club, played pretty great when he wasn't crocked, scored some wonderful goals, and now we're selling him for twice what we paid. Have some dignity. Then again I don't go to games so whadda I know?

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Monday, 31 January 2011 18:53 (fifteen years ago)

rsjhayes on Twitter: "Good English players have their price 'inflated' because there are scarce and chances to sign them don't come around very often."
