Can we really stop it with the "Stephen Ireland is some modern day Edmundo" thing? His girlfriend miscarried so he made up a lie to try and cover up why he couldn't play for Ireland that week, and then he got some pink rims for his car. He's not exactly Margot Kidder.

In September 2007, Ireland was at the centre of controversy when, in the immediate aftermath of a Republic of Ireland international match and days before their crunch game against the Czechs, coach Steve Staunton informed him of a telephone call just received from his girlfriend reporting the death of his maternal grandmother. Staunton quickly consented to Ireland's compassionate leave on these grounds, a private jet was chartered for his return. However the media quickly discovered that Ireland's grandmother was not dead, at which point Ireland announced it was his paternal grandmother who died but yet again, reporters discovered that Ireland's paternal grandmother was also still alive, and her relatives had threatened to sue one newspaper that reported her death. Ireland changed his story again, saying one of his grandfathers had divorced, and it was his second wife who had died. That was also quickly discovered to be untrue.[23]Ireland eventually came out with the truth, admitting he had invented a reason to leave the Irish team in order to visit his girlfriend in Cork, who, he claimed, had had a miscarriage. "I decided at that stage that I must tell the truth and admit I had told lies," Ireland said. "I realise now it was a massive mistake to say my grandmothers had died and I deeply regret it."[24] However this too was found out to be another fabricated story. Stephen Ireland has to this day refused to comment (radio interview with 'bbc sport-talk') on why he couldn't control his lies. Further deception was invoked by the cork man when he refused to admit that he at the time did not even have a girlfriend or a grandmother or even an uncle to which he claimed was recently divorced from a grandmother in-law to which he also did not have.

Championship top scorers last season:
1 Peter Whittingham 22 Cardiff City2 Nicky Maynard 20 Bristol City3 Gary Hooper 19 Scunthorpe United3 Michael Chopra 19 Cardiff City5 Charlie Adam 18 Blackpool6 Andy Carroll 17 Newcastle United
Hooper cost us just over £2m iirc. Charlie Adam's current value is somewhere between £6-10m? Carroll for £35m looks all kinds of wrong for a big injured nutter.

Dudes its Liverpool, just because they got a manager who hasn't managed in 15 years and a CEO who was only introduced to football about 6 months ago and a captain who likes to beat up club DJs doesn't mean everything they do will be sane

Chelsea may be strengthened by the end of it
and Carroll could be an improvement on a sometimes off-form Torres!
and United could benefit from signing Adam

West Ham signed Robbie Keane on loan.
It feels weird to have a modern transfer deadline day without anyone mentioning Man City. At all.
― Matt DC, Monday, 31 January 2011 17:23 (fifteen years ago)
That's more than £1m for every league goal Carroll has ever scored. And, assuming the transfer goes through - and apparently Carroll was being driven to Anfield by Kevin Nolan as the Fiver went to press - it could mean that come tonight the richest transfers in the history will read: 1) Cristiano Ronaldo, 2) Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 3) Fernando Torres, 4) Zinedine Zidane, 5) Luis Figo, 6) Hernan Crespo ... and, er, 7) Andy Carroll.
is kaka a figment of my imagination?
― sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

― I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 31 January 2011 17:29 (fifteen years ago)
Fernando Torres is a step up from that, of course, but the Fiver can't believe he's worth the £50m that Chelsea are ready to pay. Then again, given the choice between a striker who has won the World Cup, the European Championships and done it at Big Cup and international level versus one who has scored 34 goals in his career and whose knee-knack was once allegedly exacerbated after falling off a bar stool, we know who we'd chose.
Forgetting Kaka excepted, the Fiver killing it today.

That bastion of reliable news reporting Fox News is now reporting that Newcastle have caved in on Carroll. If they sell him and get relegated then Ashley will look like one of the biggest numpties in Premiership history.

Don't really get why LFC so desperate to spend their cash. We won't go down, we won't come 4th. If they've been evaluating things over the last few months and decided the way forward is Carroll and they desperately want him fair enough, but if it's more that they feel they have to show the fans something other then selling perhaps out best player then I wish they wouldn't bother.

Good move for Carroll I think, he needs to get away from the pressure cooker atmosphere of Newcastle and into a club where expectations are lower and his opportunities for partying and other shenanigans will be severely limited.
