That's a lot of money. Although you could try to rationale it as £15.5 and Ryan Babel (who was never going to be used seemingly). Does Suarez typically play through the middle or can he play wide right in a 4-2-3-1?

how can it mean anything else lg
― 2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:26 (fifteen years ago)
erm...because they have been trying to sign suarez for a few months.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:27 (fifteen years ago)
It'll take time for Suarez to adapt to the Premiership - Van Nistelrooy aside, the history of Dutch league strikers getting to grips with the league quickly is not great to say the least. Liverpool strike me as a club willing to be patient with a signing of that magnitude but immediately getting rid of Torres and making Suarez their sole striker aside from David Ngog would be a ridiculous amount of pressure to pile on him.
They'll sell Torres in the summer I reckon.
― Matt DC, Friday, 28 January 2011 17:30 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah I think he should see the season out. A couple more months, and we'll really know if he's worth persevering with.
― Davek (davek_00), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:31 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i think they'll sell him in the summer too, i think though there is always the chance if him and suarez are playing v well together and the mood improves that he might give it another season it at liverpool.
i agree it might take time but to be fair, the other dutch strikers who failed to adapt are your kevijn van der philips types like alves or kuyt...suarez in more in the ruud van bracket.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:33 (fifteen years ago)
Dirk was a bit of a dud striker, until he found his true calling on the right wing...at least in the prime Benitez era.
― Davek (davek_00), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:34 (fifteen years ago)
I'd say Erik Meijer was a success.

<3 Erik Meijer. My mums favourite player "he TRIES so hard" lol
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:40 (fifteen years ago)
idk why they want Suarez when Reina can still do a job etc.
― idgi fridays (blueski), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:41 (fifteen years ago)
Can't remember which one Kezman was. Kluivert is a bit unfair given he was old and knackered by then. Must be others.
― Matt DC, Friday, 28 January 2011 17:43 (fifteen years ago)
Looking forward to Suarez becoming the most hated player in the prem, the diving, handballing, ear-biting rascal.
― Number None, Friday, 28 January 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)
Suarez was wide right most of the time at the world cup. I expect he'll hit the ground running pretty much, he's top class.
I think the £50m buyout will determine when Torres goes rather than anything else. If Torres wants out, six months as a £50m striker will do the job.
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 28 January 2011 17:46 (fifteen years ago)
yeah if they get 50m to be honest...take it. think what they could do for the rest of a team that now has suarez in with 50m.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:50 (fifteen years ago)
I actually haven't seen much of Suarez...can he hold the ball up and act as a focal point like Torres. Is he good in the air and quite physical? All v. important for the prem..
― Davek (davek_00), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:52 (fifteen years ago)
He's fairly short isn't he? More of a Tevez type
― Number None, Friday, 28 January 2011 17:54 (fifteen years ago)
he would be amazing playing off torres i reckon...like he's quite creative from what i've seen as well as being a goalscorer.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)
Actually 5ft 11 according to Wiki so i guess i was mistaken
― Number None, Friday, 28 January 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)
Just let Torres have one training session with Suarez before he makes his mind up..
― Davek (davek_00), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:56 (fifteen years ago)
kluivert didn't come from holland and was 27 fyi
torres is eligible for the cl, which is why i think he will leave in the next couple days
― sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:14 (fifteen years ago)
Suarez made 111 goals in 159 games for Ajax, and consensus here in Holland, among both fans and haters, is that he's the best player in the league. He just cannot be compared to, say, Alves, who also left for England but failed miserably. His determination and skills are way higher, and he will do fairly good at Liverpool at least.
But, out of the English top clubs (counting LFC only for this occasion lol), I think Liverpool is the worst club he could choose at this moment. He's a worker too, like Lol Kuyt, but will easily share in Liverpool's misery too when the going gets tough I think.
Liverpool paid 5m too much as well tbh. But then Ajax is known for squeezing every last penny out of clubs they sell their players to, so well done Ajax I suppose.

excited to see suarez at liverpool btw. god knows how he'll fit in though...
Lucas or DMKuyt Gerrard Meireles no-one-on-the-left Suarez Torres
?
― sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:22 (fifteen years ago)
yeah ajax are the best negotiators this side of lyon
best player in the league *since Afellay left for Barca this winter*, that should read
xp
― young depardieu looming out of void in hour of profound triumph (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:23 (fifteen years ago)
he'll still be eligible for ch lge in the Summer tho. So like IK says if Chelsea stump up the 50mill then fair do's. If not LFC should just trust that he won't devalue himself over the course of the rest of the season imoxp
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:25 (fifteen years ago)
Suarez defo isn't a number 10, if that's what your team layout should portray, A Hoy Hoy. Attacking right andto a lesser extent forward yes, but not a 10.
― young depardieu looming out of void in hour of profound triumph (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:26 (fifteen years ago)
well yes but clubs are notoriously short-sighted and unless they are city, are looking at options that will give themm ANYTHING just in case they come up against a Real or Barca in the next round. Add in that Roman must be super pissed off losing out on aguero and luiz and suarez coming, it just seems inevitable to me.*
*so it'll never happen
― sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:26 (fifteen years ago)
Bit grim for him and Konchesky when the guy who signed them only lasted 4 months. But then again Kenny seems to be rehabilitating Poulsen so anything's possible I guess.
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:26 (fifteen years ago)
that was supposed to portray 'guy in the channel between the opposing left back and centre half in that kind of awkward way vucinic has made his own' la-b-i
― sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:28 (fifteen years ago)
Did Chelsea really go hard after Kun and fail? Cos I'd thought he would be the right guy for them to sign tbh

They have so many players I love but cannot think of a role for - Cole, Kuyt, Maxi, even Agger I have trouble squeezing in. Too slow is basically the problem.
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 28 January 2011 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
I see the biting incident hasn't gone unnoticed in the UK btw? :)
(he could've played for Ajax this weekend again, for the first time after his 7 match ban)

Suarez trending on Twitter btw... but then Obafemi Martins was too earlier today.
― young depardieu looming out of void in hour of profound triumph (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:40 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, all v v slow. Would be perfect circa 1978, although probably too breakable (except Dirk)
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:40 (fifteen years ago)
Agger was awesome v Fulham, made some fantastic interceptions. Needs to be more aggreesive in the air, surprised he hasn't figured that out yet after spending so much time with Carragher. Prone to lapses in concentration, but I really really like him.
― The referee was perfect (Chris), Friday, 28 January 2011 18:41 (fifteen years ago)
Still, help may be at hand for poor Fernando as Chelsea are once again sniffing around him - and, according to the Fiver's Spanish sources (OK, Sid Lowe), the Liverpool striker is busy holding up his arms and giving them a whiff of Paco Rabanne. Apparently Torres has "reached the point at which he believes that a departure from Anfield is now the right move for his career", "does not want to miss out on the opportunity to join Chelsea for a second time", and "is pessimistic over the future and his patience has worn thin". Much like some people's F5 button at 5.30pm last night, you might say.
aw snap fiver
― sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Friday, 28 January 2011 21:27 (fifteen years ago)
when a team does badly people say this stuff, but fact is all of those except perhaps maxi are perfectly fine to have in a squad, agger and kuyt pushing first team. man u have always have/had players like this (o'shea, park, brown, prob tons more), rotation players who do well. one of fergusaurus rex's best skills is keeping these guys hungry.
i think agger in particular, to agree with chris, is extremely good, he only looks ropey due to long term injuries, when he has had a good run in the team he is a top defender.
would put a decent sum of money down that torres won't go this window. not hard for a club that doesn't want to sell a player to hold out for 48 hours is it?
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 28 January 2011 23:36 (fifteen years ago)
LG makes a good point re the Utd 'squad' players. Also don't think Torres will go this transfer window either, but what do I know?
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Friday, 28 January 2011 23:41 (fifteen years ago)
Liverpool have rejected a written transfer request from star Spanish striker Fernando Torres. The Anfield club have already turned down a bid from Chelsea - thought to be about £35m-40m - for the 26-year-old."He's under a long-term contract. We expect him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool and its fans when he signed the agreement," said the Reds.

it's strange because I think they're all great, Kuyt in particular would be an asset to any side except Barcelona, but collectively those three together are one ponderous attack behind Torres. Probably no more than one on the pitch at any one moment.
Agger is a special case because I can't peg what role he should be in. I'd have him as a deep-lying midfielder or a libero maybe, something about him seems wrong at CB.
Has Suarez actually signed? The stories all say 'fee agreed' but stop short of saying he's there.
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 28 January 2011 23:48 (fifteen years ago)
It basically comes down to whether the club think his value will go down in the Summer or not. We won't go down this season and we won't finish top 4 so having a disaffected player doesn't really matter too much unless his value decreases I don't think.
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Friday, 28 January 2011 23:48 (fifteen years ago)
one ponderous attack behind Suarez, then
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 28 January 2011 23:49 (fifteen years ago)
or behind N'Gog
Suarez hasn't officially talked to LFC yet I don't think. Presumably his agent has indicated he is agreeable to the move.
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Friday, 28 January 2011 23:49 (fifteen years ago)
^^just saw torres transfer request....reckon my point stands tho. look at tevez or whatever. they can ballbreak him and he'll still play and try. in fact would be stupid to sell him now. let him go in the summer if he still wants to, but would be massively bad business to yield to such a slapped up bid. the money is worth nothing not least since signing suarez...any fee is bad business with 24 hours or less to spend it.
x-post torres and suarez have same agent, which does make you wonder a bit. but as i say, rational view has to say it'd be a major surprise if torres goes. if they want to keep him it won't be hard to just refuse all offers.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 28 January 2011 23:50 (fifteen years ago)
Was thinking it's not a big stretch for Chelsea to trigger the buyout fee, but it's still an eight-figure sum. Odd how footy numbers warp your brain.
