Cash Cab guy is a decent standup from what little i remember of the one time i saw him on Comedy Central

williamstevenjames (some dude), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I like Brian Reagan is my favorite silly dad comic.

Darin, Friday, 28 January 2011 17:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't form sentences today.

Darin, Friday, 28 January 2011 17:46 (thirteen years ago) link

feel like people are STILL stealing jokes from the old school observational dads like wayne cotter. who now, apparently, is known as a corporate comedian. hey, its a living. and he never got a big sitcom deal. i'm sure jerry and ray took bits from him. or what do i know. maybe he stole from them too.

scott seward, Friday, 28 January 2011 18:05 (thirteen years ago) link

wow wayne cotter he was pretty reliable back in the day. brian regan is sillier these days and probably better for it, that last standup CC thing was a good way to pass the time

contrflowvers-e (tremendoid), Friday, 28 January 2011 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Ron White is probably the least dad comic of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour guys, or at least he's more avuncular than fatherly, but he probably counts, I like him.

williamstevenjames (some dude), Friday, 28 January 2011 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, Ron White is fine. Even Foxworthy and Engvall are okay when they don't get into slogan comedy. Dan Whitney should really consider retiring "Larry the Cable Guy" though.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 28 January 2011 19:20 (thirteen years ago) link

ron white frightens me.

he looks like a motherfucker who would have some dark secrets if he didn't stand onstage talking about his hard drinking lifestyle for an hour every night

williamstevenjames (some dude), Friday, 28 January 2011 19:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Ron White creeps me out. He has that sorta predatory look of a man who has been drinking since noon.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 28 January 2011 19:28 (thirteen years ago) link

imo he's like someone's really funny drunk uncle who'd be a bit less funny if he was your drunk uncle

williamstevenjames (some dude), Friday, 28 January 2011 19:29 (thirteen years ago) link

^ this

Johnny Fever, Friday, 28 January 2011 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah that's a pretty good descrption!

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 28 January 2011 19:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Kathleen Madigan's recent Showtime special was really funny and kinda made me think of her as the female Ron White, since half her set's about alcoholism and she seemed to be slurring her words drunkenly a lot of the time

williamstevenjames (some dude), Friday, 28 January 2011 19:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Southern accents reminded me of Henry Cho. He used to be around a lot more than he is now, but I've always found him funny.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 28 January 2011 19:34 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah he's not great imo but his one CC special has some good laughs

williamstevenjames (some dude), Friday, 28 January 2011 19:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I love Ron White; he's got a real mean edge to some of his stuff. He was on the Comedy Central roast of Jeff Foxworthy and his routine wasn't that great, but one of the other comedians said (I'm paraphrasing) "Ron White drinks so much that when he eats peanuts you can hear them splash into his stomach" and that cracked me up.

The Cash Cab guy has some decent material, but he also has a weird speech impediment which doesn't really become obvious until he's talking for a few minutes straight (that is, it's way more noticeable during a stand-up set than on Cash Cab).

that's not funny. (unperson), Friday, 28 January 2011 20:19 (thirteen years ago) link

had never heard of cash cab til this month or so. he had some decent adlibs. what is the state of the art of game show emceeing? ray combs is still tugging at it from deep

contrflowvers-e (tremendoid), Friday, 28 January 2011 20:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Stand-ups do a lot of cable hosting I've noticed. Suzanne Whang used to host House Hunters (I've only seen her stand-up once, and it was a long time ago, but from what I remember she's probably better off as a tv host).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 28 January 2011 20:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Whang. Hur hur

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 28 January 2011 20:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Alright, now Suzanne Whang is on my shitlist. According to this (very long) story, she's responsible for turning on Oprah (and, by extension, the rest of the country) to The Secret.

but, y'know, wkiw still

scott seward, Friday, 28 January 2011 20:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think I get it either otherwise I'd prob have seen it.

‎\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 28 January 2011 21:01 (thirteen years ago) link

a girl I knew in college, Amy Schumer, is a standup now and she's co-hosting a show on Fuse with one of the guys from Blink 182. she's pretty funny, too, was a finalist on Last Comic Standing and had a good CC special recently.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110128/ap_on_en_tv/us_obit_charlie_callas

i must have seen some of his appearances but i have no recollection of his act. anyway r.i.p.

contrflowvers-e (tremendoid), Friday, 28 January 2011 21:38 (thirteen years ago) link

charlie callas was silly. old school clown. hung with all the big boys for decades.

scott seward, Friday, 28 January 2011 21:57 (thirteen years ago) link

ouch, forgot about this:

Johnny Carson was also impressed by Mr. Callas, inviting him to appear on the “Tonight” show nearly 50 times. Then came the night of Sept. 21, 1982.

With Mr. Callas bombing, Mr. Carson made a whistling-buzzing sound — as if tracing a bomb’s trajectory. In comic desperation, Mr. Callas leaned over and shoved Mr. Carson. Mr. Carson, almost always amiable on the air, was so annoyed that on the spot, in front of his television audience, he told Mr. Callas that he’d never appear on the show again. Mr. Carson kept his word.

scott seward, Saturday, 29 January 2011 00:44 (thirteen years ago) link

ouch is right! wow

contrflowvers-e (tremendoid), Saturday, 29 January 2011 00:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Dont mess with Johnny.

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 29 January 2011 01:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Stories like that make me think Carson was a king prick. The way he had Joan Rivers blackballed from NBC over her talk show in the 80's was pretty terrible.

Darin, Saturday, 29 January 2011 03:09 (thirteen years ago) link

He seemed like it was more of being rigidly principled. Like "these are my rules and woe if you cross them". I mean, the Rivers blackballing was pretty bad, but from where he stood she betrayed him by trying to go out on her own. Dude seemed very, very black and white, friendship or no.

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 29 January 2011 03:17 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think he was a prick. Maybe just hard to get close to.

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 29 January 2011 03:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Not like I know, or anything. Just kind of the feeling I get from him, and what I've read.

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 29 January 2011 03:19 (thirteen years ago) link

never saw Mo Mandel before and he was pretty funny. Tom Rhodes sounded like he was straight-up imitating Mitch Hedberg with his delivery sometimes.

Louis C.K. at Caroline's next month, two shows a night for like four nights

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 29 January 2011 22:56 (thirteen years ago) link

these CC ads for Nick Kroll's new special are so irritating. he's like this totally decent average snarky bespectacled comic but then he does all these awful characters where he wears sunglasses and 'talks black'

some dude, Saturday, 29 January 2011 23:48 (thirteen years ago) link

kroll is hilarious

big baller eating steaks every day (jeff), Saturday, 29 January 2011 23:51 (thirteen years ago) link

love Kroll.

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 30 January 2011 00:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Not a big Kroll fan. Also, as much I like football/fantasy football, you'd think I would be a sucker for The League. I'm not. I almost hate it tbh.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 30 January 2011 00:03 (thirteen years ago) link

do you guys just like Kroll or do you like "Fabrice Fabrice" too?

some dude, Sunday, 30 January 2011 00:04 (thirteen years ago) link

El Chupacabra for all time

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 30 January 2011 00:06 (thirteen years ago) link

The League is not enjoyable.

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 30 January 2011 00:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i like all of his characters. i think he is excellent live and on cdr. i think i've seen him do stand up as himself once or twice but i don't recall much of that.
