Jenny, any suggestions for an agency specializing in citizenship processes? Nutshell: A Canadian costumer I know got married to a U.S. citizen, and had a baby. Because of the post-9/11 changes to citizenship requirements, she's in for a 2 year process. At this point, she's overstayed her visa and can't go back to Canada until everything is taken care of.

It sounds like she's really looking for someone to answer some reasonably basic questions, but doesn't want to pay a bunch of $$ and the agencies she has spoken with told her they specialize in Spanish language clients.

Anyhoo, I told her I'd check in with my super savvy social justice-y attorney friend.

LOL @ Amanda.

I saw them on SNL and the singer was annoying b/c he kept going "Hup hup!" (maybe "Woot woot!") between lines.

Jesse, Thursday, 4 December 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

you can tell the rest of the band makes fun of the singer when he isn't around. the two dudes on the left look especially vicious, dude on the right just kinda goes "huh huh huh yeah he sucks"

chris martin is all like (imagine this in a british accent) "fellows, i've written a song about ... freedom" and those two guys are all like smirking and making wanking gestures as soon as he turns around

yesterday the guy in the apartment below ours was listening to "taking tiger mountain by strategy" by brian eno, one of my favorite albums, and i thought about going downstairs and introducing myself but it seemed weird so i didn't

the connection being that brian eno produced the newest coldplay album

The guy in the back looks vaguely like the guitarist for C4n4st4.

jaymc, Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

I've wasted a lot of time in the last couple of days on a somewhat quixotic task proposed by someone on the Stylus message board: come up with 1,990 "excellent" tracks from the 1990s. Someone started a shared Google spreadsheet, and it looks like we're at about 1200 right now. As I try to come up with more and more songs, I'm beginning to lose sight of what's "good," however. I see that I have a scrap of paper next to me on which I've scrawled the following:

Deep Forest, "Sweet Lullaby"
Nicki French, "Total Eclipse of the Heart"
Del Amitri, "Roll to Me"

It's pretty fun, though, because it means I've just been on YouTube all day, listening to shit like Martika and June of 44.

jaymc, Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:11 (seventeen years ago)

I just want to poke my head in and say, bunny + bubbles = me smiling.

fiscal liberal (kenan), Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

Deep Forest, "Sweet Lullaby"

Funny, I had a hankering for (and downloaded) Tranquility Bass "Cantamilla" the other day, and felt no shame at all. It's kind of on the same tip -- you know, take a kind of chanty world beat thing and put a beat over it that's so perfectly innocuous you just want to break something. Hey, sometimes you're in the mood.

fiscal liberal (kenan), Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

Ooh, also makes me think of Future Sound of London "Papua New Guinea." Except that sounds more like breaking stuff.

fiscal liberal (kenan), Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

I could go for some Enigma about right now.

omar little, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

Is anyone going/interested in going to the Big Science show next Friday? For those who care, Cullen will be in town, too.

sisut, Thursday, 4 December 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

Where is it?

jaymc, Thursday, 4 December 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

some know what you dude last summer (Jordan), Thursday, 4 December 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

Hideout, I think...

sisut, Thursday, 4 December 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

I could be interested in that. I have tentative dinner plans, but I assume the band won't go on until late?

jaymc, Thursday, 4 December 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

I assume not. I'll touch base with Clark and/or Cullen and email you the details. I've got a friend in town, so I'll be dragging him over there, and I haven't seen Cullen it what seems like ages.

sisut, Thursday, 4 December 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

Who is Cullen?

Jesse, Thursday, 4 December 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

my goddamned mouse is weird.

Jesse, Thursday, 4 December 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

La Lechera, Thursday, 4 December 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

jaymc, Thursday, 4 December 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

guys i had another hilarious esl moment today in class

we were going over the final exam practice test and one student asked a question, and then another wanted to ask the same question. they talked at the same time and the second one said, "i didn't know if we should eee ass"

me: i'm sorry?

him: we should eat ass?

you know, if we should ass the same question.

laughter ensued.

what disturbs me is that my students don't know how to enunciate well enough to pronounce "each" or "ask"?!?!?! woe is me.

La Lechera, Thursday, 4 December 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

also i got an email recently that read "sorry teacher, i am seek"
that one was pretty cute, though.

La Lechera, Thursday, 4 December 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

"Workers get lezzy when the boss is away" is still my favorite.

Eazy, Thursday, 4 December 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

oh man, my boss had some kind of dental surgery done in her continuing quest to have straight teeth before she gets married, and now she sounds exactly like a menarded person. :/

some know what you dude last summer (Jordan), Thursday, 4 December 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

ahahaha that one was the best. i also like the beautiful bitches of guatemala.

La Lechera, Thursday, 4 December 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

You need to collect these and publish them in a little novelty humor book. But without coming across as racist.

Jesse, Friday, 5 December 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

oh man, no way. i feel bad enough laughing about them on the internet. to profit from these larfs would send me to hell.

La Lechera, Friday, 5 December 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

nick, i emailed you, because you are a library scientist.

some know what you dude last summer (Jordan), Friday, 5 December 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

Can someone answer a question me this - what is the deal with the convention in writing numbers out, followed by the number in digits in parentheses? "I fell over twenty-nine (29) times."

I use that form, but I don't know why.

Jesse, Friday, 5 December 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

i only do it when making jokes online, to sound overly formal

some know what you dude last summer (Jordan), Friday, 5 December 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i think it's mainly in formal writing, like contracts, to clarify numbers.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral
The church bell chimed, 'til it rang twenty-nine (29) times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Your original display name will be displayed in brackets. (dan m), Friday, 5 December 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

I started to type "what is penelope" into Google, and Google wanted to auto-complete it as "what is penelope cruz doing now." I guess a lot of people are wondering that.

jaymc, Friday, 5 December 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

tonight: going to see stella
rest of the weekend: work on final projects for school (next week is the last week of the semester, y'all) and ???

n/a is just more of a character....in a genre polluted by clones (n/a), Friday, 5 December 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i'm pretty sure i'm not coming down tonight for stella, i need a weekend to chill and clean my apartment, maybe play percussion on a friend's gig tonight.

some know what you dude last summer (Jordan), Friday, 5 December 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

sarah is saying we should be crazy social and go to the party we were invited to tomorrow AND karaoke, we'll see if that actually happens
