Do you think it's common that a manager gets a cut of every transfer? It sure explains the existence of John Lambie and his signing of 80 players a season then selling them after a month.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

"Guardian fined 25k for putting out a weakened exclusive" is pretty bang-on as far as immediate-aftermath-text-message-jokes go, by the way.

I believe Iain Holloway receives a percentage of the *profit* on Adam's transfer. I'm not sure how many players have had tenfold increases in value under John Lambie's tutelage.

onimo, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

I'm still sure it's less than under Big Phil and little Brazillians. How much was u-21 captain "Scheidt by name, shite by nature" again?

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

Nothing near the £5m reported, but still a hell of a lot + wages for a guy they'd only seen in a 5 minute video made by his agent.

onimo, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

iirc Scheidt went on to captain Corinthians (?) to a championship after leaving us. Maybe not as duff as he was painted in the press but totally unsuited to the SPL (see also World Cup winner Juninho who looked fucking gash).

Both players would probably blame Martin O'Neill for their lack of development/opportunities in their time there.

onimo, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't recall correctly - they won the cup, not the league, when he was there.

onimo, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:40 (fifteen years ago)

Just re-read what you said and I think the answer is "lol EPL". Once somebody looks half decent their price rockets because that's where batshit prices go to die. Xpost to G

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

Those inflated values are mostly paid between English teams for EPL to EPL transfers. Not too many leave the UK for bigger money than they arrived. EPL chairmen are suckers basically.

onimo, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

I mean seriously... I said earlier this year I'd rather have Charlie Adam than Stevie Me, yet one is "valued" 10x more than the other one. Torres is worth more than £10M after the past couple of seasons? Seen people saying £60M+ onF365.

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

His scoring record for 18 months before his form slump was the best in the country. I still think there are enough rich people around willing to take a punt on him rediscovering that form.

onimo, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

Also there's no way anyone spends the £50m on Gerrard that was being bandied about when Chelsea were sniffing around.

onimo, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

Gerrard's too old to be worth a transfer now. Torres is still class and would fetch a big fee, but I am worried about his pace rather than form - if that's gone he's half the player he was.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

They said that about Owen but have you read the brochure? The guy's still got it (the brochure).

onimo, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:11 (fifteen years ago)

Are United actually paying him at all? I like to think Ferguson sends him out to warm up just as a tease

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

He brought him on against Liverpool, for purely wind-up reasons I presume.

onimo, Thursday, 27 January 2011 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

and on cue Chelsea bid £35m for Torres. I'd've thought 40-something was about right atm, but I didn't know he had a £50m buyout clause and that seems like the facesaving way out for everyone

Ismael Klata, Friday, 28 January 2011 07:29 (fifteen years ago)

So Chamakh and Nasri smashed it.

?

I know Torres has had a good, oh what, 6 games since last January but if his form doesn't pick the fuck up soon, surely rejecting bids like 35+m is gonna start looking stupid.

sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Friday, 28 January 2011 13:11 (fifteen years ago)

I think James is referring to the blackmail story

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23913144-premier-league-footballer-blackmailed-over-orgy-with-three-swedish-blondes.do

http://marouanechamakh-fan.blogspot.com/2010/06/marouane-chamakh-plays-pickup-game-in.html
Marouane and fellow Arsenal teammate, Samir Nasri, played in a pickup up match in Las Vegas

onimo, Friday, 28 January 2011 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

"Pickup" game indeed

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Friday, 28 January 2011 13:42 (fifteen years ago)

Torres hasn't dropped off anything like conclusively enough that LFC won't be able to get circa £35 mill for him at some point in the next couple of years imo

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Friday, 28 January 2011 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

i guess. i don't like that the market doesn't reflect reality but what headline writers make it. other than his performance against chelsea, he has been a £10m player the past year imo

sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Friday, 28 January 2011 14:27 (fifteen years ago)

It's what they think he'll do in the NEXT year so that's important. Be interesting to see if his form picks up if he's at a club he actually wants to play for.

Matt DC, Friday, 28 January 2011 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

Does he not want to perform for the Spanish side then?

sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Friday, 28 January 2011 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

Torres has never shone consistently at International level though has he?

Number None, Friday, 28 January 2011 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

I know age and length of time left on contract come into the equation, but I mean we just supposedly got 6.5 mill for Babel who I don't think many people think has done that well in the last year. So Torres at 10 mill over the last year seems a bit off. But like Matt says it's all about what a club thinks he'll do for them I guess.

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Friday, 28 January 2011 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

26 goals in 81 appearances for a Spanish side that isn't really set up for a player like him isn't too shabby.

Stevie T, Friday, 28 January 2011 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

how is not set up for him? in fact it has been since before villa started to really become the big thing, took way long to drop him for cesc as an attacking midfield #10 etc.

sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Friday, 28 January 2011 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

not trying to be a dick but i guess it comes naturally

sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Friday, 28 January 2011 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

really <3 torres on his day and wish he's end up at spurs playing with vdv off him

sammy bagels (a hoy hoy), Friday, 28 January 2011 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

he's had a lot of injury probs, assuming he's fit he's perhaps worth a little more than 10m. maybe 11 or 12. that's why chelsea have bid 35m.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 28 January 2011 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

Suarez!

The referee was perfect (Chris), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

in?

Ismael Klata, Friday, 28 January 2011 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

Looks like it, yeah, up to €26m. Liverpool have confirmed it.

Matt DC, Friday, 28 January 2011 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

Ajax confirmed it as well, up to max € 26.2m.

young depardieu looming out of void in hour of profound triumph (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

LFC Official Site says €26.5m. That's around £22.7m?

The referee was perfect (Chris), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

:) this better not mean torres is off.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

That's a lot of money. Although you could try to rationale it as £15.5 and Ryan Babel (who was never going to be used seemingly). Does Suarez typically play through the middle or can he play wide right in a 4-2-3-1?

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

how can it mean anything else lg

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

erm...because they have been trying to sign suarez for a few months.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

It'll take time for Suarez to adapt to the Premiership - Van Nistelrooy aside, the history of Dutch league strikers getting to grips with the league quickly is not great to say the least. Liverpool strike me as a club willing to be patient with a signing of that magnitude but immediately getting rid of Torres and making Suarez their sole striker aside from David Ngog would be a ridiculous amount of pressure to pile on him.

They'll sell Torres in the summer I reckon.

Matt DC, Friday, 28 January 2011 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I think he should see the season out. A couple more months, and we'll really know if he's worth persevering with.

Davek (davek_00), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i think they'll sell him in the summer too, i think though there is always the chance if him and suarez are playing v well together and the mood improves that he might give it another season it at liverpool.

i agree it might take time but to be fair, the other dutch strikers who failed to adapt are your kevijn van der philips types like alves or kuyt...suarez in more in the ruud van bracket.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

Dirk was a bit of a dud striker, until he found his true calling on the right wing...at least in the prime Benitez era.

Davek (davek_00), Friday, 28 January 2011 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

I'd say Erik Meijer was a success.
