Nick, doesn't your school's library website have search tools? Maybe you could call them and get more info.
¡El Pollo Loco es no mas! What are you talking about???
― Jesse, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 18:36 (seventeen years ago)
what is an online reference tool that you would say is simple but works well? like instead of having 100 features and doing 100 things, it does one thing really well?

Oh. I understand the question now.

Directory of all heads of state, ever: http://rulers.org/
― jaymc, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)
google is probably a bad idea, library folk are not always pro-google, though it wouldn't matter if i made a good argument for it
i think i might use the RHYMEZONE rhyming dictionary
― n/a is just more of a character....in a genre polluted by clones (n/a), Wednesday, 3 December 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)
or some other rhyming dictionary
― n/a is just more of a character....in a genre polluted by clones (n/a), Wednesday, 3 December 2008 18:52 (seventeen years ago)
the heads of state directory is pretty neat
I use that one at work all the time.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)
library folk are not always pro-google
yeah i guess this doesn't surprise me.
i was going to say imdb, but once you get into things like quotes or keywords it gets pretty wonky.

John, how would you go about finding the minimum wage for minors in IL in 2001? Jenny was inquiring about that and it's probably irrelevant now, but I'm still curious. We were unsuccessful at Googling it.
― Jesse, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 19:00 (seventeen years ago)
there isn't a separate minimum wage for minors, is there?
― n/a is just more of a character....in a genre polluted by clones (n/a), Wednesday, 3 December 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)
Wikipedia? Although the information is of variable quality, it is very easy to use and works well (unless you include "delivering consistently reliable information" in your definition of working well).
Employment law info at http://www.workplacefairness.org/.
I actually really like my agency's webpage, too. Well, "really like" is kind of strong, but I have never been annoyed by it, let's put it that way.
― atty at LOL (Jenny), Wednesday, 3 December 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)
Yes, there is a separate minimum wage for minors - http://www.state.il.us/Agency/idol/Facts/mw.htm
― atty at LOL (Jenny), Wednesday, 3 December 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)
wikipedia is also kind of a touchy subject for library people. google or wikipedia would have been good choices if this was a major part of the assignment and i had to write a lot, but it was just an extra part at the end so i don't really want to do something that detailed. thanks though.
― n/a is just more of a character....in a genre polluted by clones (n/a), Wednesday, 3 December 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)
Under Federal law, you can pay an employee under 20 $4.25/hour for 90 days, then you have to bump them up to the federal minimum wage, which currently is $6.55/hour.
I could see Wikipedia being a touchy subject for library ppl. Or anybody who values truth and accuracy.
― atty at LOL (Jenny), Wednesday, 3 December 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)
Jenny, did you find the info you were looking for? If so where?
― Jesse, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 19:16 (seventeen years ago)
No, I never found it. I actually found a link to a table at the US DOL website that tracked changes to minimum wages in the states since like 1980 on some random website, but it was dead and I couldn't find the correct URL.
I just made my argument without it. I didn't really need the info, it just would have bolstered my argument that the employer was totally taking advantage of this kid by having him do ridiculously skilled labor for a pittance.
― atty at LOL (Jenny), Wednesday, 3 December 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)
It sounded like he was just strining wires through tubes.

i always found them irritating until i saw that the singer dude has a tiny, errant thumb growing between his pinkie and ring finger on his left hand. now i have found some sympathy in my heart for the guy. i will give the him this -- he looks relentlessly clean.

Jenny, any suggestions for an agency specializing in citizenship processes? Nutshell: A Canadian costumer I know got married to a U.S. citizen, and had a baby. Because of the post-9/11 changes to citizenship requirements, she's in for a 2 year process. At this point, she's overstayed her visa and can't go back to Canada until everything is taken care of.
It sounds like she's really looking for someone to answer some reasonably basic questions, but doesn't want to pay a bunch of $$ and the agencies she has spoken with told her they specialize in Spanish language clients.
Anyhoo, I told her I'd check in with my super savvy social justice-y attorney friend.
― sisut, Thursday, 4 December 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)
LOL @ Amanda.
I saw them on SNL and the singer was annoying b/c he kept going "Hup hup!" (maybe "Woot woot!") between lines.
― Jesse, Thursday, 4 December 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)
you can tell the rest of the band makes fun of the singer when he isn't around. the two dudes on the left look especially vicious, dude on the right just kinda goes "huh huh huh yeah he sucks"

then they light cigars with $1,000 bills
yesterday the guy in the apartment below ours was listening to "taking tiger mountain by strategy" by brian eno, one of my favorite albums, and i thought about going downstairs and introducing myself but it seemed weird so i didn't
the connection being that brian eno produced the newest coldplay album

I've wasted a lot of time in the last couple of days on a somewhat quixotic task proposed by someone on the Stylus message board: come up with 1,990 "excellent" tracks from the 1990s. Someone started a shared Google spreadsheet, and it looks like we're at about 1200 right now. As I try to come up with more and more songs, I'm beginning to lose sight of what's "good," however. I see that I have a scrap of paper next to me on which I've scrawled the following:
Deep Forest, "Sweet Lullaby"Nicki French, "Total Eclipse of the Heart"Del Amitri, "Roll to Me"
It's pretty fun, though, because it means I've just been on YouTube all day, listening to shit like Martika and June of 44.

Deep Forest, "Sweet Lullaby"
Funny, I had a hankering for (and downloaded) Tranquility Bass "Cantamilla" the other day, and felt no shame at all. It's kind of on the same tip -- you know, take a kind of chanty world beat thing and put a beat over it that's so perfectly innocuous you just want to break something. Hey, sometimes you're in the mood.
― fiscal liberal (kenan), Thursday, 4 December 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)
Ooh, also makes me think of Future Sound of London "Papua New Guinea." Except that sounds more like breaking stuff.
