Woah, where've you been?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

hmmm. At what we're likely payin him i'm not sure we couldnt have spent our time and money better.

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

good buy imo if you can offload a ohara/jenas and move krancjar inside

wb drunk boat!

"jobs" (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah Kranjcar is really likely to get a position in the middle of the park as a result.

Probably entails dropping Lennon to the bench and using him as an impact sub.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

ohara is ace. Better dm than jenas, prob better lb than bae. Good cover for at least three positions.

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

kranjcar in middle doesnt convince, but a good option as deep lying striker i reckon

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

I was being sarcastic about Kranjcar. Difficult to see where he'll fit in really bar an injury crisis ruling out three players. He's a good player and we should sell him.

We're not keeping O'Hara in purgatory out of spite, he's had a back operation that's ruled him out for most of this season.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

usa 3rd-lung midfielder exodus to lower-table prem teams underway? Jermain Jones to Blackburn.

dan m, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

Jermaine

dan m, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

i asked you yr opinion on him when it became obv he was going - so...?

"jobs" (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

This is cos he somehow managed to fall out with the notoriously calm tempered and tranquil Felix Magath isn't it? Probably not impressed when Felix cancelled Christmas.

Djourou the Damaja (pandemic), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

@Ismael Klata and A hoy hoy, thanks and eyup!

I figured the best moment to drop by here again would be in a season that will see Arsenal win the league, tbh ;-)

young depardieu looming out of void in hour of profound triumph (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

not without vermaelen, more's the pity. We'll fight ye for fouth

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

xps hm, missed that I guess

Yeah Jones fell out of favor at Schalke. He's the one kind of player the US is currently somewhat loaded w/ -- hard working, box to box, decent passing and something of a destroyer i.e. Bradley and Maurice Edu. Also has a rep for having something of a temper. Dude played a few games for Germany before deciding to play for us then immediately got injured for like a year and a half and missed out on the WC. He'd have been on the roster if healthy, imo. I saw him in person here in Chicago in a friendly vs. Poland, he had one very nice through ball that Altidore ran onto and finished + a lot of solid central play. If he gets playing time in England he'll be useful on the Gold Cup squad.

dan m, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

not sure if a bad temper, tattoos, hard-tackling style are necessary for "big" status but...

dan m, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

Sounds like a good buy then? Other than the temper thing

is Bent a Europaphobe?

idgi fridays (blueski), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

boy he looks excited to be there

if only he was getting interviewed by the bbc head football writer at the same time

"jobs" (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

it's almost like you definitely can't get relegated with Darren Bent in your team

a fierce jet of passion-fruit cream and powdered mint leaves (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

that's a nice watch bent's wearing

buy lying (whatever), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

say what you will about Darren Bent's decision, he definitely made it.

(what's the real speculation on his thinking? This "they're a 6th place team really I swear" doesn't cut it.)

"I don't want to play for Sunderla- fucking hell someone's bid £18 million for me"

Sgt's Laughter (Sgt. Biscuits), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 21:55 (fifteen years ago)

And Newcastle fans trashed his car and Sunderland fans racially abused his mother and he fell out with Steve Bruce and he doesn't like playing with Gyan.

(I didn't have time to work this information into a faux-Mcnulty thinkpiece or the interior life of DB11TT)

Sgt's Laughter (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 00:05 (fifteen years ago)

Some may speculate that Sgt Biscuits' recent posting complacency makes his involvement in the ROLLING MCNULTY THREAD a risky move, but there can be no doubt that he's offered many quality performances in the past. One thing is for sure, his journey isn't over yet.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

bent and young, as the old charlton gag went, big fat sol will be looking for a move there. Cant work agbonlahor in there tbh.

Bent as the prong in that attack is a good prospect, they'll suit his game nicely if they keep it down.

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

woodgate and o'hara available again for spurs is as good as too signings, if the inevitable woodgate relapse is somehow delayed a little while.

Pienaar older than i thought. Four year deal will bring him well into his thirties. Kranjcar younger by a good bit?

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

is the new york cosmos different to new york energy drink?

"jobs" (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, cosmos have vodka in them but no redbull

I thought I lived in England (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 09:53 (fifteen years ago)

Downing-Bent-Young is going to be the most effective-but-basically-bullshit front three in the Premiership.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 11:01 (fifteen years ago)

ha that's a strange outlook.

Is that the same as 'underrated'?

Young prob not, but the other two are consistently unfairly overlooked/criticised in press etc

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 11:17 (fifteen years ago)

Good managers and defenders will know exactly what they're going to do before they do it and Villa's attackers won't be imaginative enough to be able to cope with that, although they may well tear a lot of lesser teams apart.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 11:27 (fifteen years ago)

bent's record vs good managers?

We're not gonna do this again surely....

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 11:36 (fifteen years ago)

We have witnessed a new low in British journalism this morning.

The Sun have led their football content this morning with the claim that Denilson has had a “dig” at Cesc Fabregas for not being a leader.

First off, and this is very much a typical example of how much of the tabloid press twist quotes for their own sensationalism, Denilson does not criticise the Arsenal captain.

The full quote is here: “I think that we lack leadership and without leadership we can’t move forward. You can walk forward a bit but then the same thing that’s happened will happen again. These things make us very sad but I don’t see a player at Arsenal who is a real leader. I can’t see a single one. Even if Fabregas is the captain, but he is not a leader to me.”

It’s hardly sensational stuff from Denilson, and is in may ways much like his playing style, tidy and straight to the point. The fact the Gunners don’t have a “leader” like former greats Tony Adams or Frank McLintock is not major news.

Now, The Sun twisting quotes is not a new occurrence so what takes this piece by Charlie Wyett to a new low is the fact that this “journalist” took the interview from the excellent Arseblog and gave no credit to either the blog or website Arsenal Brasil who produced the interview.

As Arseblog points out this morning “I know how hard the guys at Arsenal Brasil have worked to arrange that interview, to film it, edit it, provide me (and in return you) with English subtitles. Charlie Wyett and The Sun are content thieves. If I nicked something from another blog without a link back or at least saying where I got it from I would rightly be hauled over the coals for it. Just because it’s in the public domain does not mean it’s fair game.”

And Denilson’s interview with Arsenal Brazil, with English subtitles, is on this video.

"jobs" (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 12:04 (fifteen years ago)

Downing has been good this year, far better than I imagined him capable of being tbh. Young has gone backwards the last season and a half basically.

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 12:11 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, where Young is still rated, he's over-rated.

I thought I lived in England (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 12:15 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno, hasn't he fallen back into that 'eh i guess he's kinda alright, at least he's not a pennant/bentley dick' catagory he is perfect for?

"jobs" (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 12:19 (fifteen years ago)

Denilson does not criticise the Arsenal captain.

"Fabregas is the captain, but he is not a leader to me."

I think that is a criticism - though imo Arsenal seem to be doing ok without whatever leadership they're supposed to be missing.

onimo, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 12:47 (fifteen years ago)

think the fact that it's clearly a criticism is the main joke

I thought I lived in England (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 12:49 (fifteen years ago)

UPDATE: Arseblog have now pointed out that The Sun in fact secured the quotes from a different source. Despite this – the above piece remains to prove how The Sun have manipulated an innocent interview to attempt to drum up problems in the Arsenal dressing room.

great work in putting shoddy journalism to the sword, guys.

A new low in British journalism.

lol ny cosmos are a youth team

dan m, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

Fabregas vs Denilson would be one of the lamest training ground fites imaginable.

I like his suit here. I had a Cosmos replica retro shirt with equally huge badge, but I seem to have lost it. I'll be disappointed with that, it was the best strip I've ever owned, largely for being made of cotton and not horrible footy shirt material.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

I was thinking yesterday after Stevie Me's "I'll make sure Kenny gets the job beyond this season" speech and how fed up I am with him and Carragher sticking out as two huge egos in the Liverpool team that we could really do without, and comparing it to say Arsenal, who appear to all get on with each other really well. Don't know what point I'm making. Oh look a spider on the wall.

The referee was perfect (Chris), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 14:47 (fifteen years ago)

You are more than welcome to Denilson, Almunia and Bendybus to provide some team spirit at Liverpool.
