I think the "teal & orange" thing is like when you learn the meaning of a new word, and then suddenly you hear and notice that word in print everywhere. Even though they were always there.

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 05:45 (fifteen years ago)

The place where it goes bad is when people start pretending like teal and orange is a totally unacceptable color combination, and is totally made up, and is taking over our lives.

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 05:47 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously, Jordan, after the first three-ish photos you posted, none of them contain unusual amounts of teal OR orange.

Let Me In owns this thread

Gukbe, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 05:56 (fifteen years ago)

i don't agree -- i mean, somehow (a coincidence?) 80% of the extras in the background of these scenes happen to be wearing teal or orange?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 February 2011 05:57 (fifteen years ago)

http://i56.tinypic.com/16kaww5.png

i mean a totally classic random sample here of people wearing all different color shirts at the chuck-e-cheese

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 February 2011 05:58 (fifteen years ago)

So the problem is with the wall color of a Chuck-E-Cheese in a movie? Of the shirt of a random background guy?

I assume this thread is meant as a complaint. If it's just meant as observation, then I gently and politely do not care.

And that means...?

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:05 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think the issue is as much with costumes and set decorations as it is with the post-production colour correction.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:06 (fifteen years ago)

that it looks fucking retarded in succession

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:07 (fifteen years ago)

it's clearly an aesthetic choice & it's a terrible one

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:08 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think the issue is as much with costumes and set decorations as it is with the post-production colour correction.

I understand, that's ostensibly the trouble brewing here. The reason that particular palette is used so often is because the flesh tones remain reasonably believable, but the blues opposite those tones stand out in high contrast. It's all about making the blacks blacker, I think. It's a fashion, it will fade, and movies from this time period will be recognizable for that particular look.

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:13 (fifteen years ago)

It's not a bad color combination, I don't think. I have much more of a problem with the obsession with making the blacks as black as the cover of "Smell the Glove," and that's not just a movie problem. Every "glossy" computer monitor nowadays has it, as well.

I am Woolen Man. The scarf and I are one. (kenan), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

still, all of those jpgs pale in comparison to the scene they showed on conan -- ill try & get some shots w/ my phone but srsly y'all should turn it on in like 20 mins

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

I think it's that teal and orange are opposites on the colour wheel (or something like that). they make each other 'pop', as it were. that's why they do it. I blame Ridley Scott.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:22 (fifteen years ago)

yes that is why

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:23 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, that is indeed why.

Point is, it's a silly thing to get up in arms about.

Started watching a few minutes of Worth last night which is excessively Teal & Orange. At first I wondered if this was a clever nod to the past, but then thought it wasn’t a thing until the late 00s - so perhaps just lazy filmaking?

A spot of teal and orange talk on this dissection of the colours of Skyfall and Spectre (which is slightly undermined by them being as forgettable as each other in my mind)

London and MI6 in particular are the only locations defined by what we might call a teal-and-orange palette; a sort of idling-state palette for Bond's home, but one where the desaturation implies a nice sort of decrepitude and rot. pic.twitter.com/IlvmhvhpcW

This thread is making me nostalgic: teal, orange and gray were the colors in shops in 1999 when I was fifteen and buying my first set of Nice Grown-Up Clothes for a school exchange. I had a beautiful soft gray sweater from the Gap with bands of dark gray, dusty teal, and dusty orange on the sleeves. It was my favorite sweater for years until it tragically shrank in the wash.

Lily Dale, Thursday, 11 November 2021 22:33 (four years ago)

that thread on Skyfall/Spectre is really good, disagree that they're both forgettable.

I don't like Bond movies much at all but I thought Skyfall was one of the best I'd seen whereas Spectre was largely unmemorable - that thread articulates at least partly why that was the case.

not specifically about colour palette, but inspired by this tweet:

I believe CGI is getting worse even as the tech advances. I don't know if it's laziness or cost cutting but so many shots look so much worse now than in the nineties. Look at these shots from DEATH ON THE NILE. It looks like it was shot at a local tv station's weather map set. pic.twitter.com/eDt10FieyM

What is this thing where movies are (intentionally?) made to look like video game cut scenes? Is this just really cheap green-screening or is it that younger people who grew up watching video game cut-scenes actually like this look? (it's probably both I guess)

It occurred to me how long it's been since I had occasion to complain about teal and orange. Everything is only getting grey-er. I'm indulging a childlike, total layman's impression that there was like one guy responsible for the teal & orange boom who was promoted or moved on, and now there's a guy who likes everything murky and "realistic" in his place.
