kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

oh man if my husband sees that garmin thing it's all over for me - he's a total nerd for that sort of stuff.

just1n3, Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

do i have to have actual nike shoes to use this??

just1n3, Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

they are awesoem for hikes and bike rides, i think j definitely needs one!

tehresa, Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

i don't have nike shoes. i have my sensor wrapped in plastic and then attached to my shoe under the laces with duct tape. ghetto but it works!

you might get better results with it in a nike shoe? but i think if you are wearing it this way consistently and make sure to calibrate properly, it should work fine.

tehresa, Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

hmmm maybe i will start off with a couple of those for us?? although lol i think i can barely make it a mile right now. our first outing was hilariously bad - thought i was gonna die from a heart attack, my legs were fucked for two days afterwards, super sore shins and hamstrings. but then we went out a second time and it was still way hard but it somehow 'cured' my leg pain?!

just1n3, Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

You can get a Garmin Forerunner 205 for around $100 these days if you shop around. Essentially the same thing as a 305 except without the heart rate monitor capabilities. It looks bulky, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

I use a Garmin 310xt and love it. I use it with a footpod to track cadence and heart rate monitor.

Jeff, Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

ok apparently he already has a garmin for his bike, and he hasn't nerded out on it at all.

just1n3, Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

garmins look nice and all, but i don't want to geek out too much (even though it's tempting) -- tough enough to just get my miles in each week

woke up to run 25-30 miles at 4am today; it was raining HARD. i slept in :(

I love my Garmin 305! Need to find better software than the one that comes with the watch, though... it's not super awesome.

hahaha, me too!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 9 January 2011 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

i have edge 500 bike computer that you can get an adaptorwatchband for. its mega ugly huge and kludgy, but it does work, and that's fine by me.

find the best motivation sometimes is to look at old pictures of me with a fat face = instant desire to run for me

roustabout (cozen), Sunday, 9 January 2011 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

yah i feel like a major lack of motivation comes from how nothing really affects my weight, like when i am fit and when i am unfit i look p much the same

plax (ico), Sunday, 9 January 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

apparently there's p good software you can d/l for a nokia phone but seeing as i can't get the gps to work there's not much point in me doing it.

garmin watches on offer now and then on amazon for around €100 plax, but likewise it's never a good time for me to drop that on a sports tracker

all i gotta do is akh nachivly (darraghmac), Monday, 10 January 2011 01:20 (fifteen years ago)

ran my furthest ever today, i'd been stuck at 5.3 miles or so for ages, partly due to illness and bad weather limiting the amount of times i could go out. back in the swing a bit now and i did 5.9 miles in 56 minutes. was a weird one...dying after 3 miles then i bought a water and got a huge second wind, by the end i was really stretching the legs and going v fast. could have done more but decided to call it a day.

what stretches do you guys do? do you do before and after? i'm reading a lot of places now saying to only stretch after running? i do these: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_1/126.shtml

found via google.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 10 January 2011 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

i only stretch after, but im prolly not the person to ask abt these things. i have been avoiding doing anything abt my sciatica for almost a year bc i cant afford to.

plax (ico), Monday, 10 January 2011 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

i only stretch after too, partly cos i've read you should, partly cos stretching is BORING.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 10 January 2011 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

Not sure what the point of stretching beforehand is if you're just going out on a run (as opposed to a track session or circuits or w/e), you'll warm up quickly enough anyway. I stretch for a minute or so after most runs and put a bit more effort if I'm feeling sore or did a hard session.

Dans la Bot (seandalai), Monday, 10 January 2011 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

I avoid all stretching. I do about 40 reps on the foam roller before and after each run.

Jeff, Monday, 10 January 2011 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

FYI -- the RunKeeper Pro app for iPhone is free this month. Don't know if it is the same outside the U.S.

Has anyone had experience with this app? I'm going to try it out today. I don't really want to mess with the Nike app specifically because of the $30 tracker-thingy.

righteousmaelstrom, Monday, 10 January 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i mean i dont see why the ipod touch/iphone couldnt be used the same as a garmin since it has a geolocator

plax (ico), Monday, 10 January 2011 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

i did 5.9 miles in 56 minutes

nice

x-posts...thanks. i still feel i have a lot more pace in me as i felt like i was labouring today. just need health and weather to stay in place and i reckon i can build to a v good level next few weeks. paid for the half marathon now so it's 100 per cent on!

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 10 January 2011 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

niiiice

am organising myself yet, it's my 30th that weekend so trying to get houses rented and stuff. if you're camping you're ok, but if you have aspirations to roofed accommodation get on it pronto

i meant the berlin one is the one i just booked, but i am pretty sure will do the achill one too. booking soon sounds like a good way to make sure we do it.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 10 January 2011 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

ah ok, i'm not going to berlin for my 30th sadly

all i gotta do is akh nachivly (darraghmac), Monday, 10 January 2011 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

that's great ronan!

i doubt i'll ever sign up for marathons or half-marathons - i just really like having one thing in life where i'm not measuring myself or setting targets, i don't even time myself - but it's already killing me being temporarily benched.

pretty much self-diagnosed that i have mild tendonitis - i don't really feel anything now but i should still be looking at taking a fortnight off running, right? :(

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 10 January 2011 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

how do you guys manage injuries? are there any good tips or golden rules or whatever? this week my calves have been a bit sore on the inside then had a sore thigh this morning too, i just came back in despite only being out for 5 mins cos i figure better to miss one session rather than 3 weeks of them if i make it worse.

but like....in terms of warming down and stuff, anyone got a fixed routine? does that help with preventing injury? any other advice would be good. do you guys use deep heat or any muscle gel type stuff or anything? would you ice a sore muscle?

I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 15 January 2011 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

take the first few mins slowly then stop and stretch any persistent aches. Kinda resign myself to difft bits and bobs hurting, and run through it if it doesnt feel too serious. If it feels that bad, do what you did and take a rest day.

all i gotta do is akh nachivly (darraghmac), Saturday, 15 January 2011 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

Having sore muscles doesn't always mean you're injured - if I only went out when I was feeling great I wouldn't get much running done. But obv if it starts getting worse or it's actually painful to run then try taking a few days off. If there's any swelling ice will usually help, as will ibuprofen.

My main tip for avoiding injury (apart from wearing proper shoes) is to do as little training as possible on concrete and as much training as possible on grass.

Dans la Bot (seandalai), Saturday, 15 January 2011 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

I've determined that there is no way to avoid injury, other than not running.

Jeff, Saturday, 15 January 2011 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i mean, i defo know sometimes you hurt a bit and run through it. just feel the pain does accumulate a bit. maybe i'm being too ambitious, i've been running every second day for almost two weeks.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 15 January 2011 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

i'm permanently stuck in noob phase here, but i think that's the issue -- your body does not have the supporting muscles to endure that much stress on the muscles you use when you're running. pretty normal, i think.

i try not to push myself too hard because the consequences are painful, expensive to fix, and could derail me long term. my insurance sucks too.

this is good advice. a couple weeks ago i ran 8 miles in vibrams (those funny looking toe-shoes) on pavement, and was aching for days afterward. about a week later i ran 8 miles in vibrams, again, but this time on a trail w/ loose gravel, wood chips and dirt. made all the difference -- i felt great afterward, no aching at all.

ilxor, Saturday, 15 January 2011 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

second run was at a faster pace, too

ilxor, Saturday, 15 January 2011 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

yeah ronan, didn't you just start running again after a long time? good shoes will help, but also easing into it. every other day may be a bit too much form the start. i had no pain at first when i started, then some weird bizarre pain about a month or two in as i started to up my speed and distance. icing immediately after run helped, as well as stretching and a little ibuprofen/taking days off when necessary. after a while it just went away and i haven't had any problems since. i think la lech is right, it may have been a matter of building up those muscles/support.

tehresa, Saturday, 15 January 2011 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

got no option but to run on pavement :(

all i gotta do is akh nachivly (darraghmac), Saturday, 15 January 2011 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

same here really as regards pavement...i run through a park for part of my run but the grass is extremely muddy and swampy right now. even if it wasn't it's not very even.

yep tehresa i started running relatively recently, like around the end of august, but since getting shoes fitted all my muscle pains and twinges had stopped for a time. reckon yday was just a twinge tho, just ran my furthest ever today and felt fine, 6.02 miles in 55 minutes, back just as the sun has gone in and it's started to rain!

what do you all listen to when running? my life has inverted in that running is now the only time i listen to house or techno. got a serious rush of euphoria listening to this after about 4 miles today

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLJ60I56c64

there's a marina i ran around and it was a really sunny morning, love those moments when running. i actually feel a bit like am on drugs sometimes when i run < /embarrassing admission>

also do you say hello to other runners? i don't normally but today there were laods of runners out and a few did a sort of nod at me to which i nodded in return.

finally....do you guys hydrate much? i haven't had to yet but as my distances increase i feel like i might bring a few coins in my pocket and buy a bottle of water halfway around...don't want to be carrying it for long tho.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Sunday, 16 January 2011 11:52 (fifteen years ago)

runners get a respectful nod from me; it always grinds my gears when I'm out on my bike and other riders don't reciprocate

no hydration either but that's only cos I've never run more than 7 miles solo and think the weight and inconvenience of carrying a water bottle would outweigh the benefits

80% sure I'm going to run the berlin half now after my dad says he's on board, so

the act of seeing lil wayne, nicki minaj, and drake in threesome (cozen), Sunday, 16 January 2011 12:13 (fifteen years ago)

had wild ideas of nyc...tho it's a long way off. we must try and catch up in berlin if possible...quite a few friends of mine are going too.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Sunday, 16 January 2011 12:26 (fifteen years ago)

listened to the grandfather paradox today which worked okay, there are a couple of bit's that don't really work for running, i discovered.

this whole running lark is working out pretty well for me. i think i've only missed one, maybe two, days in the ten or so since i started. running about half of the time now which is actually about 2/3rds of the distance, i suppose. i love the mix of being knackered and invigorated afterwards.
