thanks everyone. i actually made a bit of a start this evening, running/walking to my sister's house then back since i had en errand to go for her.
cozen, i'd like that cheers but i don't want to hold you back.

(definitely in a few weeks though)
ogmor otm about pace too, if you're like me you'll be tempted to go too quickly at the start. it's not a major deal as the further you start running the more you'll learn to go slower at the beginning, but keep it in mind. if you like to listen to music while running do try and turn it off for a few mins at a time and listen to your breathing and think about your posture. i've only started doing this and it's made me realise music can stop you paying attention to how you actually feel physically while running.
also, and apologies if this is obvious, find a nice route in an area where you can keep expanding it by little distances over a long period of time. for me the broadening of the boundaries of the area i run has been a really good way of feeling progress and a sense of achievement.

cozen and i are definitely lucky on that front having a canal side a minute away and a riverside attached to a park/botanical garden a few minutes in the other direction.
i will definitely watch my pace too. i'm quite psyched for this!
― jed_, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 21:41 (fifteen years ago)
i made a good start today. it was cold and wet but, since i live in glasgow, if i waited for dry and mild i could be waiting a long time! it was quite bracing! not exactly the best thing for a first outing but i enjoyed it nonetheless and felt good afterward.
― jed_, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:23 (fifteen years ago)
Congratulations.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:24 (fifteen years ago)
cheers.
― jed_, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:25 (fifteen years ago)
Yay! At least you get to run around Glasgow. That sounds pretty fun to me.

I actually like running in the rain. But then I live in Portland.
― righteousmaelstrom, Thursday, 6 January 2011 16:32 (fifteen years ago)
ok, ow. so for the first time since i started running regularly 3 years ago i'm getting...knee pain while i run? like, a dull pain in my right knee that gets worse if i slow down. it first happened the other week, after xmas, and i did a run in between then and now without feeling it, but it came back today. i still did my 9k fine by running through the pain, but...is this the sort of thing that will go away by itself? nothing about the way i run has actually changed! maybe i finally need to get fitted trainers, though after three years without problems i can't imagine why that would suddenly be an issue.
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:03 (fifteen years ago)
It could be tendonitis. I had a dull pain in the right knee just off the knee cap a few years ago. I had been running for a few years as well when it occurred. When I went to see the doctor, he said it sounded like tendonitis of the tendon that connects the thigh muscle to the knee.
I took about a two week break after that (which I probably didn't need to do) and when I started up running again I used a knee support sleeve when I did run, and iced down the tendon and took some ibuprofen to reduce pain and swelling. It did go away but it took awhile.
― righteousmaelstrom, Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:19 (fifteen years ago)
ughhh doesn't sound good. i'll get a knee support sleeve though.
also, when i'm not running, i don't feel it. well, hardly, bar the v occasional and v mild twinge.
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:31 (fifteen years ago)
I don't have any personal experience with knee problems but if you're not wearing proper running shoes I suspect you're bound to run into injuries eventually.
― Tarzan Bot (seandalai), Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:38 (fifteen years ago)
theres tons of stuff online abt what exactly tendonitis feels like what diff injuries are etc - if it gets worse def rest and ice - i stupidly ignored knee tendonitis a couple years ago and ended up not being able to run for a couple months when i couldve just rested for a couple weeks - my only running injury - v common most runners encounter it at some point
― ice cr?m, Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:50 (fifteen years ago)
def strengthening the muscles around the knee helps via doing squats etc
― ice cr?m, Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)
Where on the knee? Lateral, under, kneecap?
― Jeff, Thursday, 6 January 2011 17:59 (fifteen years ago)
not entirely clear but i think...under?
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 6 January 2011 18:12 (fifteen years ago)
so...a couple of weeks rest, if it is tendonitis, is what's needed - nothing else?
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 6 January 2011 18:13 (fifteen years ago)
ice, elevation, u know the usual
― ice cr?m, Thursday, 6 January 2011 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

ipod thing is like a glorified pedometer basically... cool for tracking speed/distance/calories, but no info about terrain or mapping.
― tehresa, Sunday, 9 January 2011 16:32 (fifteen years ago)
i mean for $20 it is cool obv you get a lot more when you spend $$$$$$ for a garmin
