yeah segal and hannigan both really played that last scene well, very convincing and not at all overacted, brought the right amount of gravity to the scene that kind of took you out of the sitcomminess for a second without feeling too tacked on or incongruous.

i somehow totally missed the countdown numbers, had to look up what phil was even referring to on a recap site.

washa flocka brain (some dude), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

agreed. also missed the countdown numbers? but i also missed the opening few minutes

Nhex, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 04:54 (fifteen years ago)

thought the wacky numbers thing was a bad clash w/ the last scene. weirdly tasteless. also, barney was overly creepy throughout.

Simon H., Tuesday, 4 January 2011 05:18 (fifteen years ago)

also, I saw the ending coming btwn the title and the phone calls, but Hannigan + Segal really sold it, so brutal.

Simon H., Tuesday, 4 January 2011 05:20 (fifteen years ago)

Holy shit. I missed the countdown but that was really great.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 06:22 (fifteen years ago)

Ha, rewatching, the countdown is so obvious.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 06:24 (fifteen years ago)

But yeah, I really liked how they pulled together a number of running threads within an especially heavy major episode: the doppelganger, all of Robin's on-air history, including minor things like Barney's 'dirty girl' dare or the Japanese news show.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 06:27 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't notice the countdown at all, and without knowing the title of the episode that was a helluva surprise. That episode really brought out what I love about the show, there aren't many sitcoms (or sitcom actors) who could pull that off without making it seem like a Very Special Moment.

xposts

I didn't think Barney was overly creepy. He's been a lot worse.

Jouster, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 08:18 (fifteen years ago)

I spent ages wondering about the big 6 on the doctors pad, so it all kind of fell into place.

tbh i thought with the dad theme and bearded barney the reveal would be his dad, which threw me off and made it a bigger dramatic smack in the face.

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

wow at the countdown. i thought it was just a thing at the end to turn it from a funny ep about making babies and first days to sad end. never noticed it went the whole way through.

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

whoa. i did notice that crazy ass 6 and the that pamphlet marshall was reading, but almost none of the others

Nhex, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

Me neither, the 6 was the only one I noticed so I didn't realize it was a countdown.

not the sort of person who would wind up in a landfill (Nicole), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

the super obvious 10 on the denim jacket got me.

i noticed the 36 on the beer cause the camera got in real tight on it.

mizzell, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

SPOILER*** why would they have a secret countdown to Marshall's father dying? (obv they did, but what were they thinking the effect would be?)

Mordy, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

Not to brag, but I noticed the countdown right away (well, almost ... starting with 49). Fantastic episode, one of the best they've ever done.

feels in keeping, it;s the kind of greenaway-ish ish they do sometimes

i noticed it happening, not every number but most, so you a had a 'where is this going thing', maybe to marshall being infertile (but we know he probably isn't coz lily was preggo in a flashforward, could be someone else's but still), maybe something else

really good ep, and mostly a top-form season so far

moholy-nagl (history mayne), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 22:03 (fifteen years ago)

haha good call on greenaway, carter bays refs drowning by numbers here: http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b218838_how_i_met_your_mother_boss_on_last.html

Robin is really stunning in this episode.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 01:19 (fifteen years ago)

i never post on this thread; i never watch this show. i'm just dropping by to say that the brunette woman on this show is hott.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 18 January 2011 01:22 (fifteen years ago)

that is Robin.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 01:23 (fifteen years ago)

HOTT

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 18 January 2011 01:23 (fifteen years ago)

was thinking robin's looking good this week too!

some dude, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 01:26 (fifteen years ago)

is it the hair being up? i dunno why it's striking me now.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

i spotted her on a magazine cover at border's. some silly men's journal, like details.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 18 January 2011 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

Maxim.

She never looks as good in photos as on the show.

three weeks pass...

loving Marshall's brother Marcus

some dude, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 01:26 (fifteen years ago)

omg that last scene in the hallway was the best thing i've seen all year. the actress that plays zoey broke my heart.

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

That was really well done, I guess, but since we know she can't be the mother it feels pretty pointless.

Whatsherface from House is gorgeous tho

boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 05:03 (fifteen years ago)

i honestly don't care for once that she's not the mother - the story is about marshall atm. also i presume ted's old school mate gets married in the season finale?

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 11:01 (fifteen years ago)

aw, i thought that was the cutest ep. i'm really happy they've rebounded after that shitty last season. this one has been really strong imo

Mordy, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

i don't know if i can go through another prolonged ted loveaffair/breakup though! can i? how many do i have in me?

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

now i'm kinda wishing there was a spinoff where marshall becomes the mayor of his hometown. green acres 2011.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

the season ends with him meeting the mother so its cool, just one more la/bu scott

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 23:23 (fifteen years ago)

ah okay. that makes it easier to take.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

where have they said he's going to meet the mother at the end of this season?

Mordy, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

He meets the mother at the wedding he is best man at, and at the end of the season he is best man at a wedding?

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

do we know that the wedding is happening at the end of the season?

Mordy, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

i think the timeline was mentioned iirc? like it seemed months away and not years away?

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 10 February 2011 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

whether the wedding is at the end of the season or not i feel like it's a given that they're never gonna really introduce the mother, show her onscreen and everything til the finale or maybe last few episodes. both because of the opportunity for some kind of big deal stunt casting, and so that they don't have to worry about the minefield of introducing a 6th main cast member for the last season or seasons and letting the audience decide whether she's a good character/worth the wait, etc.

some dude, Thursday, 10 February 2011 00:43 (fifteen years ago)

you really think this show lacks in confidence?

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 10 February 2011 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

and stunt casting p throwaway - or lol is that katy perry?

oh wait sorry i forgot superbowl week television is a big thing thus katy perry, lol america

we're talking about a show that once ensured its renewal for another season by throwing Britney at her trainwreck peak into a couple episodes

some dude, Thursday, 10 February 2011 00:55 (fifteen years ago)

eh tbh if the wire had a chance to get britney on, it would have taken it

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 10 February 2011 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

i'm just saying, i'd be willing to wager a little cash that my prediction (mother revealed very close to the end of the show's run + played by someone very famous or at least well known and cast for some kind of clever/in-jokey reason) is correct. although this show is totally journey not destination for me, not particularly invested in how it ends like Lost or something.
