Zubar last season was a better RB than Hutton by far, can actually defend plus decent creative outlet and stamina to bomb up and down all game. Obv if he hadn't been injured for the first chunk of this season he'd've been a lock.

John Terry will be disappointed he wasn't included as one of the year's best attacking midfielders. I'm disappointed he didn't die in a fire.

seems so long ago gerrard was saying "messi can do some amazing things, but anything he can do joe can do as well, if not better. I really fancy joe for the [player of the year] award this season"

I think I said in this thread some months ago that Charlie Adam would cost more than Gerrard for the same role.

Bloody hell, that's amazing. Totally damning too - stats in football finally turn out to have some use.
Also lol at the one red 2009 arrow, obviously when someone was down with an injury.

what's the deal w/this villa-boas character then... sounds eerily like another portuguese fella who found favour at porto
He is regarded as unique in the sense that he has no football playing experience, became a coach of a major club with very little head coaching experience, and achieved this role at a very young age.
― hey DARSH (cozen), Thursday, 30 December 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)
hey wait a minute...
After starting at a very young age on several positions in F.C. Porto's observation department under the guidance of then manager Bobby Robson, he achieved his UEFA C coaching licence illegally as a minor at the age of 17 in Scotland.

So, according to the back pages Roy has two weeks to save his job. I guess that means no Liverpool cash spent in the transfer window?
― progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Friday, 31 December 2010 11:17 (fifteen years ago)
the tabloids I read said there'd still be money spent cos comolli is in charge of that, not roy.

heartening to know.
also like, don't liverpool have no ceo type dude at the moment? who's going to appoint a new boss? comolli?

Celtic.
Peter Lawell was targeted by Arsenal you know, so he must be good.
― onimo, Friday, 31 December 2010 12:25 (fifteen years ago)
He certainly rakes in the cash with his performance-based bonus structure so he's evidently doing something right :-)
― ailsa, Friday, 31 December 2010 13:12 (fifteen years ago)
liverpool's gold standard has been debased
I thought this was really good, especially the winners-to-hangers-on ratio bit. This sort of thing makes me think Roy should stay and really have a go because I hate it when teams start to change then back out immediately, but:

no me neither. reckon roy will be gone when we lose or draw that.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 31 December 2010 14:41 (fifteen years ago)
I'm clinging to the hope that Bolton underestimate us and play their nice passing game whilst neglecting to close us down etc. However if we defend as deep as we have been against the Elmander/Davies combo then I really will start to completely despair.
― howie was a rock, buddy couldn't handle it (pandemic), Friday, 31 December 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)
would only be worse statistically, Wigan at least play well when they beat you. Wolves were at best competent, and Liverpool won't get an easier game than that the rest of the season. Coming off the 1-3 against Newcastle, who were also absolutely rubbish, it can only get better or stay as bad, there isn't a worse from here
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 31 December 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)
tbh I take exception to some of this. Yeah Liverpool were poor, and we have v. few genuinely exciting players, but on Wednesday night we did what we've done for a lot of the season - kept the ball well, pressed, played pass and go. If Meireles had scored his sitter in the first half it would've been a different game no doubt - McCarthy never seems to have a Plan B. But we're in the middle of an injury crisis ourselves and still trying to play football with a youngish squad and some positional deficiencies. So you know, at best competent was still good enough to get a FAIRLY FUCKING COMFORTABLE win at Anfield, soz.
― Costco Chapel (Noodle Vague), Friday, 31 December 2010 16:40 (fifteen years ago)
that's kind of my point though. I'm sure Wolves can play better than that - they certainly keep showing a bit of fight every week that you had the luxury of keeping in the locker on Wednesday

i saw bolton against chelsea and i've seen them a few times this season. they don't actually look like one of those midtable sides playing good football and on a good run. they're still comprised mostly of strong, controlledly aggressive players (paul robinson being the sole concession to wanton violence) and they have a lot of purpose and no fear. they are a better team than liverpool this season.

I wasn't sure if Wolves would be able to press like that for the whole game but god they were awesome.

Gary Neville escapes a certain red card again. Surprise surprise. Chris Foy allergic to giving red cards. Should be 2-1 West Brom (if they scored the pen they shd have got) vs 10 men. Morrison's goal was a beauty too.
― howie was a rock, buddy couldn't handle it (pandemic), Saturday, 1 January 2011 13:20 (fifteen years ago)
xp 1312: Big, big shouts for a West Brom penalty as Graeme Dorrans latches on to a long ball over the top. He is shaping to shoot inside the area when Gary Neville slides in. Does he get the ball? No. Does get the man? Yes. It should be a spot-kick but referee Chris Foy says no.
ARGH WHY. So fed up of these decisions going Utd's way every week (even if that isn't true, it is in my mind)

West Brom well on top here. Cut Utd open on numerous occasions and bossing the midfield. Anderson has been great the last few weeks but not getting much joy today. Of course Utd are going to end up winning this 3-1. Sigh.

It is hard to understand why a manager as supposedly shrewd as Ferguson keeps putting him on the pitch, even if it is only occasionally.
I think he's just having bets with himself/Michael Owen to see how long he can keep him on the pitch.

The only way Utd will really impress will be if they win the league whilst winning just once away from home. That would be truly outstanding. Also don't know if I can muster the energy to search for a stream of the Liverpool game later. Actually I've decided I can't. Oh look Utd are winning. 2011 has a 2010 feel about it.
