Well, that would be me. I was trying to explain the context of a comment NBV posted in regards to my opinion re the Hodgson appointment. I think it was pretty clear and I really wasn't trying to be a dick. But you know if you want to tell me to 'fuck off' you just did, so well done.

People on some crazy entitlement bullshit thinking Liverpool deserve to be higher than they are.

No problem with not challenging for the title, but would you honestly be happy with Arsenal defending for their lives against the likes of Blackpool and Northampton?

Arsenal haven't cocked up how to run a club the past 5 years.

I started supporting Arsenal at a time when they were a drunken post-bung mess. Badly run clubs get bad results.

How was Hodgson an excellent choice? What on his CV suggested that he was suitable for the job? He was brought in to steady the ship and to get the best out of the players available, which btw are nowhere near as bad as the press would have you believe. The idea that he was going to take the shackles off and have us playing sexy football was absurd, where's the evidence for this? He got the job on the back of a good cup run, and because the press wanted an Englishman in charge of oen of the big clubs.

The referee was perfect (Chris), Thursday, 30 December 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

Who is ever talking about taking the shackles off and playing sexy football?

He got the job because he has proven himself turning around a sinking ship.

isn't there a whole thread for the village elders to stand around poking the twitching corpse of liverpool and expounding on how it came to pass

Rockcrit from the Tuoms (nakhchivan), Thursday, 30 December 2010 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

liverpool weren't going to finish in the cl next year whatever happened

the only issue is where do they go now? the new top four might be as difficult to shift as the old top four

Rockcrit from the Tuoms (nakhchivan), Thursday, 30 December 2010 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

that mixed metaphor is stupid but you know what i mean. liverpool nearly went bankrupt and got a 9 points deduction this season. a 9 point deduction would have them last by 5 points. Liverpool didn't need some sexy football, they needed someone who knows how to make sure a team isn't relegated and then can move up back into a European place. He also has a p good record at big clubs btw.

Lawrence Gray-Hodson on Hodgson’s Liverpool plight:

I remember when I was in the middle of my career and we had a change of manager. The fans didn’t take to him at first, chanting against him because the man who came before him was popular. It didn’t matter that he’d nearly had us relegated. The fans loved the way he dealt with the press, the chairman, the players. The new man found it tough at first and we players let him down just as the Liverpool players are letting down Roy Hodgson.

During one game some of our fans showed their support by going to his house and spray-painting an enormous penis on the side of his house. Rather than watch their team they did that. And that’s what Liverpool fans are doing to Roy Hodgson. They are spray-painting a giant penis on the hallowed turf of Anfield.

O'Neill has surely been successful, in context, in each season of each job he has done.

I still feel that he is one of the best British managers, which may not be saying so much.

But maybe my esteem for him is more down to affection for his manner, things he says, etc?

the pinefox, Thursday, 30 December 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

probably

talking abt internecine roman politics in bbc football chat while not even making eye contact with the other ppl = great

playing kicknrush crap and collecting every big at crazy expense then flouncing when he has he wings clipped = not so much

you forgot "big man"

reckon when people say "man", "fella", "chief" they frequently are thinking "cunt."

i know if i catch myself using "man" i realise it's if i amn't v familiar at all with the person to whom i'm speaking

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 30 December 2010 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

True about O'Neill, but I still think he has been successful, in context, in every job ... did he really finish 6th 3 times in a row with Villa? Looks pretty good now.

the pinefox, Thursday, 30 December 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

That's a bit like saying "Did Rafa really finish 7th with Liverpool? Looks pretty good now." - O'Neill left Villa only a few days before their first league game, it's the team he left behind that's struggling. They would probably have struggled if he stayed, given that he apparently couldn't get the money he wanted to strengthen.

onimo, Thursday, 30 December 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

Awesome posts a hoy hoy and Lawrence Gray-Hodson, I'm feeling suitably chastened now.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 30 December 2010 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

these defences of roy are silly, he's lost at home to blackpool, wolves, and northampton and he's lost away to practically everyone. this isn't the level of the team, they're hoofing it up the pitch, there's no game plan, and he persists to give half assed idiotic explanations for bad form in every interview, his general tone of excuse is as if a match is like rolling a dice, and liverpool would be top of the league except due to misfortune they keep rolling 1s and 2s.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 30 December 2010 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

so last night I was watching the match in a pub in Chester full of unhappy but friendly 'Pool fans. Pretty intense.

Hodgson's inability to change things up was pretty sad. Liverpool were crying out for a bit of width and pace and it never came.

The pity hurts the most of all.

It occurs that what I'd really like to see right now are the half-dozen games Leeds played under Clough, see what it looks like when it's indisputably the players throwing the towel in.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 30 December 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

because they don't know who the one at smaller clubs is? most people's knowledge is v. limited, as is their interest tbrr.

Joe Hart

Hart ended the previous season as the imposing last line of defence for Birmingham during his loan spell at St Andrews and is now the undisputed first choice for Manchester City and England. An outstanding shot-stopper, Hart can sometimes be less than perfect on crosses, but at just 23 his best years are still ahead of him.

Alan Hutton

Far from the most competitive category in this select XI, but Hutton gets the nod after impressing while out on loan with Sunderland in the second half of last season before returning to White Hart Lane to become Harry Redknapp's first-choice right-back in Spurs' impressive debut campaign in the UEFA Champions League.

John Terry

Terry is the rock that holds Chelsea's defence together and was an integral figure as they clinched a first-ever double last season with glory in the Premier League and FA Cup. Recent absence through injury was keenly felt by Carlo Ancelotti's side and the England international will be integral to arresting their recent slide.

Nemanja Vidic

The uncompromising Serbia international is the quiet man of United's centre-back pairing alongside Rio Ferdinand but is arguably the more accomplished player. Few strikers come out of a game against Vidic without knowing that they have been in a contest, with his tough-tackling and aerial prowess second to none.

Ashley Cole

Cole remains one of the most remarkably consistent performers for club and country with his attacking forays down the flank for Chelsea and England matched by his defensive resilience. His previous off-field antics may make him the bête noire of many supporters, but on the pitch he has few peers in the global game.

Nani

The Portugal international has stepped out of Cristiano Ronaldo's considerable shadow at Old Trafford and is now rightly regarded as one of Sir Alex Ferguson's most potent attacking weapons. Nani boasts lightning-fast feet, fearsome pace, a powerful shot and an ability to make the ball dip and swerve seemingly at will.

Tim Cahill

Everton's Mr Reliable remains a scourge of Premier League defences and already has eight goals to his name this term. The Toffees' slow start to last season was mirrored by a dip in Cahill's usual productivity, but as he improved hugely after the turn of the year so did David Moyes' men.

Charlie Adam

Captained Blackpool to promotion via the play-offs last season and scored a superb goal in their thrilling Wembley victory over Cardiff. An integral part of Ian Holloway's free-flowing Tangerines unit and found the net in their stunning success over Liverpool at Anfield earlier this season.

Gareth Bale

The young Wales international has enjoyed a meteoric rise in recent months with his displays against European champions Inter Milan garnering the kind of hyperbole and column inches usually reserved for Royal Weddings. Skill, pace, a superb final ball and goalscoring ability make this 21-year-old one to watch for many years to come.

Andy Carroll

Carroll has silenced the doubters who questioned if he would be able to make the step up from the Championship to the Premier League with 10 top-flight goals already to his name. Terrorised defences in the second tier last term and was rewarded for remarkable rise with his first England cap in the recent friendly against France.

Carlos Tevez

The all-action Argentina international is the man who makes Manchester City tick - although he sometimes appears on the brink of exploding due to his occasionally fractious relationship with Roberto Mancini. A staggering return of 33 goals from 50 Premier League games for City aptly demonstrates his talents.

Is Alan Hutton really better than Bacary Sagna? Tbf he has played far better this season than I would have imagined possible, but I still don't know that I'd actually call him good.

Miffed Ferguson recalls Preston loanees

Sir Alex Ferguson has reacted to his son's sacking by recalling two United players who had been on loan at Preston

Trying to decide if that team would be any good. Don't think they'd cut it in centre midfield tbh.

yeah not saying Hutton hasn't improved but feel like the best RB in the division should be making fans of his team shit themselves with fear less than three times per match on average

When I Pardew I See Rakes (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 30 December 2010 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

Zubar last season was a better RB than Hutton by far, can actually defend plus decent creative outlet and stamina to bomb up and down all game. Obv if he hadn't been injured for the first chunk of this season he'd've been a lock.

I write the lols that make the whole world zing (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 30 December 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

John Terry will be disappointed he wasn't included as one of the year's best attacking midfielders. I'm disappointed he didn't die in a fire.
