horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:45 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't really like talented mr. ripley but maybe it's good as a movie apart from its failure to capture the novel

horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:46 (thirteen years ago) link

at the time i thought damon was pretty bad in it

horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:46 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah horseshoe otm those books are great and creepy, there are not enough novels about sociopaths these days imo

max, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Not really: Ripley doesn't make sense as a character. But I liked the supporting cast though.

xp to horseshoe

i liked tmr, i will say this about gwenyth too, she is a babe

max, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:47 (thirteen years ago) link

i remember gwyneth and jude law a lot more than i remember damon's performance from that movie

horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:48 (thirteen years ago) link

cate blanchett is a babe

gwyn, she's ok

moholy-nagl (history mayne), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:48 (thirteen years ago) link

i will say, blanchett and law in that movie make paltrow and damon look very normal persony. paltrow is so pretty in general though; she looks kind of whatever in that movie, maybe that's part of why i didn't like it.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

On the other hand TMR was pretty bold about its homosexual subject matter, and I remember the audience uncomfortably rustling when Damon asks Law if he can join him in the tub.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

but these days jude law looks like ass and matt damon is v cuet, so

horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:51 (thirteen years ago) link

looks a bit beefy to me but im not the target market i guess

poor jude and his hairline

moholy-nagl (history mayne), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Jude Law went through that period when he made Gattaca, Wilde, and TNR that made him look dangerous and sexy; then he fucked his kid's nanny and became human.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:54 (thirteen years ago) link

TNR = TMR

haha i was afraid of sounding predictably self-righteous but i do kind of feel jude law's soul caught up to his face or something

horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

TMR is a good movie and one of damon's best roles. not read highsmith but it's in the same class as the other highsmith adaptations i've seen, wenders's and hitchcock's.

― moholy-nagl (history mayne), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:43 (21 minutes ago)

amerikanische freund is nice but strangers on a train does unseemly things to it

I am not averse to Matt Damon, although I suspect that, like so many movie stars, his success is as much based on an intangible charisma as on acting ability. That's ok by me, since I am just as much smitten by charisma as the next guy, and this has been true of movie stars since the silent era.

I must say I am a bit surprised at all the love shown here, after reading so many ilxors slag off on Good Will Hunting, consistently and in multiple threads, as if it were one of the greatest abominations ever foisted on an innocent public. Clearly, he has redeemed himself.

also casey affleck is pretty hilar

max, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 18:44 (thirteen years ago) link

and remember max, no films you have to read.

TMR is classic 'well-intentioned' liberal homophobia, and Jude Law is great in it, but I'm sure this is on an Untalented Mr Minghella thread somewhere.
