Beyond the roles he picks, he's been very good at balancing being a star and being anonymous, and it benefits his work. See Affleck and Damon as opposites of how to manage an emerging career.

yeah, well, plus Affleck just isn't very talented as an actor. selectiveness aside I think his looks and talent carried him about as far as they could.
my fav Damon-in-a-smith movie moment is him ad-libbing the lyrics to "Run's House" in Dogma

afflect directed gone baby gone so pretty much wins that

i am sort of proud of affleck for realizing he is a mediocre actor and deciding to become a better-than-mediocre director
― max, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 04:18 (thirteen years ago) link
i'm not sure that was his rationale but assuming it was, has anyone else taken that route?

yeah i mean, I'm sure he gave himself the lead in The Town because he thought it'd be good for his career as an actor, plus he's in the next Malick movie so I bet he thinks he can rehabilitate himself as an actor by being in more interesting shit
thanks for filling me in gbx!

While watching Affleck do pull-ups in The Town I realized I still have a weird crush on him.
Anyway, ENBB: the Run's House scene is my hands-down favorite moment from Dogma, and that's saying alot bc I LOVE that movie. His little stutter dance step at the end is LOL and awesome.

i was talking to friends abt True Grit and then about how much i like matt damon and apparently this was news to them! like i was all out of character for me! or maybe just out of character for me to actually care abt a celeb. but dudes this guy was freakin Jason Bourne AND is also hilarious. i think he has the best smile in hollywood.
ok now i will read this thread

rrrobyn otm. Matt Damon, best smile in Hollywood. More than a smile. It's like a drop-your-pants-high-beam-of-awesome.
Sorry. The Krush Groove thing got me all carried away.

I don't see Damon playing great sociopaths, as he was a black hole at the center of the utterly misguided Talented Mr Ripley.
Anyway, True Grit is the first time I've liked him in eons, tho I tend to skip anything where he's the lead (Bournes, Green Zone etc).
his best comedic roles (The Informant, 30 Rock, Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, even the Ocean's movies really, etc.)
You left out the only one I like, Stuck on You.

jeezus, like what? I think it was the combo of Good Shepherd and Informant that resolved me never to see a 'Matt Damon picture' again.

I admire him for taking the narrating job for a film that points out what a phony our prez is, which means the sucking-Obama's-dick limo lib crowd might be pissed at him for awhile.

Outside of the Ocean's movies I can't think of many, if any, movies starring him that I've seen. (File under: "I know, right?")

"i'm not sure that was his rationale but assuming it was, has anyone else taken that route?"
Redford, I guess, but I guess you could make the argument he's a pretty mediocre director too (not that I think Affleck is any great shakes at this point.)
