sure he's a nice person and all but this thread is just o_O to me
― zvookster, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 03:05 (thirteen years ago) link
He's not quite as consistent as advertised (he added nothing to Hereafter), but I'll take his acting over Affleck's directing.
There was absolutely no call for him to get that nod for Invictus unless they just wanted to award him for having the biggest pecs he's ever had in his career, but he should definitely get one for True Grit.
― benanas foster (Eric H.), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 03:05 (thirteen years ago) link
simmons actually made a good point about Invictus - mandela spent too much time in the foreground, it wasn't the rugby team's story so you couldn't get involved in the actual drama of the game, plus the whole thing was just lame and crappy

Yeah, this was my point upthread. It's so easy for him to slip into stolid mode.

still prob the fourth best tho, which is why that movie is so amazing
Beyond the roles he picks, he's been very good at balancing being a star and being anonymous, and it benefits his work. See Affleck and Damon as opposites of how to manage an emerging career.

beyond the departed, i like him a lot. good comedy chops, great in bourne action roles, can do likeable or not,
xp choice of roles also important.
up there as one of the top 5 males in 00's i guess

Ben Affleck: Hey look, I'm sorry I dragged you away from whatever-gay-serial-killers-who-ride-horses-and-like-to-play-golf-touchy-feely-picture you're supposed to be doing this week. Matt Damon: I take it you haven't seen Forces of Nature? Ben Affleck: You're like a child. What've I been telling you? You gotta do the safe picture. Then you can do the art picture. But then sometimes you gotta do the payback picture because your friend says you owe him. [They both take a beat and look at the camera] Ben Affleck: And sometimes, you have to go back to the well. Matt Damon: And sometimes, you do Reindeer Games. Ben Affleck: See, that's just mean.

yeah, well, plus Affleck just isn't very talented as an actor. selectiveness aside I think his looks and talent carried him about as far as they could.
my fav Damon-in-a-smith movie moment is him ad-libbing the lyrics to "Run's House" in Dogma

yeah i mean, I'm sure he gave himself the lead in The Town because he thought it'd be good for his career as an actor, plus he's in the next Malick movie so I bet he thinks he can rehabilitate himself as an actor by being in more interesting shit
thanks for filling me in gbx!

While watching Affleck do pull-ups in The Town I realized I still have a weird crush on him.
Anyway, ENBB: the Run's House scene is my hands-down favorite moment from Dogma, and that's saying alot bc I LOVE that movie. His little stutter dance step at the end is LOL and awesome.

i was talking to friends abt True Grit and then about how much i like matt damon and apparently this was news to them! like i was all out of character for me! or maybe just out of character for me to actually care abt a celeb. but dudes this guy was freakin Jason Bourne AND is also hilarious. i think he has the best smile in hollywood.

rrrobyn otm. Matt Damon, best smile in Hollywood. More than a smile. It's like a drop-your-pants-high-beam-of-awesome.

― horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 04:43 (thirteen years ago) link
I don't see Damon playing great sociopaths, as he was a black hole at the center of the utterly misguided Talented Mr Ripley.
Anyway, True Grit is the first time I've liked him in eons, tho I tend to skip anything where he's the lead (Bournes, Green Zone etc).
his best comedic roles (The Informant, 30 Rock, Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, even the Ocean's movies really, etc.)
You left out the only one I like, Stuck on You.
