I was wondering why the cabs are so slow in this area? I go past the airport a lot and when I get stuck behind a cab I want to cry.

When I worked at Olsson's I met a lot of smart, interesting DC people, but I don't know where they all are now.

Re NYC people, for the most part they are pretty annoying really. Besides the Ilxors. NYC is a great place, in spite of the people who live there.

Washingtonian magazine is lame, but their new restaurant columnist, Todd Kliman, who used to be at the Washington City Paper is not.

Steve K (Steve K), Thursday, 20 October 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

i'm glad, because i like contributions of positive things to this thread and to washington.

carly (carly), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Positive thing: The fries at Five Guys. Quality and quantity.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah those are pretty good.

Positive thing about ARLINGTON: Guajillo's!

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

ng-unit, Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Positive thing about DC in general: Trees!

quincie, Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait am I supposed to be talking about food?

Positive thing about Rockville: Excellent Chinese!

quincie, Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

Other positive food things in Silver Spring: York Castle tropical ice cream and motherfuckin Mandalay!

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

jogging on the mall listening to power pop is actually pretty great.
oh, and the jefferson memorial is niiiice.
and cherry blossom trees live up to the hype.
and cicadas every 7 years = ABSURD and awesome.

carly (carly), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

hey mary which olsson's did you work at? (i worked at the dupont store a few years ago.)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Positive food: The Burma Restaurant. Cheap weird salads and noodle things, with all the ambience of a Bulgarian money-laundering storefront.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

i love the burma tofu salad. i would like one right now.

carly (carly), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

negative thing about DC in general: HIV positivity (seen those new posters on the backs of the buses?)

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Coffee Espress across the street from my workplace makes some pretty good cappucino and muffins.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Naan and Beyond has a wonderful name and a fine shrimp tikka.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

isn't sizz-ex a funny name for a place? it just makes me think about sex.

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

I get paid a lot for just being able to answer dumb questions while strapped into a silly machine.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Man, I need to find me a job that requires a security clearance! I'd love to be strapped to one of those things!

quincie, Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

That was my positive thing about DC.

Also, the Metro trains have pretty awesome sound effects, are generally clean and they live in stations that remind of late 70's science fiction aesthetics, which I love.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

dc: it's better than indiana.

carly (carly), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

See also: trees.

quincie, Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

DC Architecture veers wildly from sublime to utter unbelievably bad crap a little to quickly, esp if you walk fast like I do

TOMBOT, Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

insane freemasonic temple on 16th st!

carly (carly), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

The best thing about the Metro stations is imagining what they'll look like as Logan's Run-style ruins someday, with moss and predatory vermin living in those ceiling coffers. Mt. Vernon Square station is getting a head start on this.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

I don't even know why trains still stop there.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 20 October 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

hello people! i am still in dc, looking for an apartment 'cause my studio in mt pleasant is too x-pensive. i am down for a FAP next wednesday or thursday. i generally work mon, tues, fri, sat and some sundays. pharmacy would be a good place to go on a thrusday as there is a server.

the social "scene" in dc does suck but working in the restaurant industry has saved me from worrying about my lack of law-school credentials. i do have to serve miller lite to hordes of social climbers on a regular basis, but i am easily consoled by the fact that there are at least 7 or 8 bars where i can depend on a few-to-many free drinks. i wont name them but 5 are on brian's list. also, i have a decent amount of friends (mostly servers, bartenders, or former servers, or former bartender, most of whom LIKE MUSIC [surprise!]), and having weekdays as days off means that all the people i dont like are in offices while i have the city to myself. yesterday: amsterdam fallafel--->wonderland--->w domku(thanks brian!)--->the reef--->mantis for dan soda's new night.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 20 October 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

i might as well say this just in case: looking to pay 700 or less for a bedroom as close to hell/adams morgan as possible. i smoke, i drink, i stay out late, and dj but i am clean, like to cook and generally keep quiet.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 20 October 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

from the city paper: ADAMS MORGAN. 1ST Show! 2BR, 1BA English basement unit, 1 block off of Columbia Rd. Totally renovated in 2003 with upgraded kitchen, new bath, W/D in unit. Roomy LR, sep. DR. $1500/mo.+. 10/17, 5PM

this one's likely gone. but get yourself a buddy and look for two bedrooms, it shouldn't be impossible to find something in that range.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 20 October 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

i wish. i have express business center in mt pleasant and $20 for 5 hours. though i can go to www.discogs.com on my cell phone. this has already resolved a geeky debate in the past week.

i have a buddy. we are trying for 1300. i really dont know what i am doing cause i might not want to be stuck in a lease for another year. i have made a number of calls and emails, we will see. there is a 2br in the bernstein building that tom linked to for 1295. i am going to visit within 24 hours of now.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 20 October 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh hi Aaron! You should come on Thursday! I was already planning on some of us stopping by yr place of employment if you weren't there to see if you were there!

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, I think dar1a will laugh at this at least, I just wanna say that today I am wearing a white blouse, a dark brown pencil skirt with cargo pockets on the butt, chocolate fishnets, and chocolate mary jane wedge shoes...AND I AM BEING GLARED AT BY WOMEN ON THE STREET LIKE I AM A COMMON PROSTITUTE. Hahahaha Talbot's assholes get one (1) fashion.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

i will come on thursday as i am not working. NOT WORKING! :-P

btw downstairs of reef ("Lush") is open most nights but usually not until 8 or 9.

dc fashion sucks because most of those people DIDN'T EVEN GO TO PREP SCHOOL! I must wear my http://www.lindafarrowvintage.com/ sunglasses with any polo shirt lest anyone mistake me for a former resident of fairfax or rockville.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 20 October 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

"Moi...Lolita"

(xp)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 20 October 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

yeah...we made the mistake of going to the downstairs when it was not open! That was the night we ran into you I think, Aaron? We were there really early, like at 6pm.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 20 October 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

its rarely open that early. btw tom your favorite reef bartender is back in lush on mondays.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 20 October 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

I worked at the Alexandria Olsson's, but this was like, 10 years ago.

Hi Aaron!

library, Thursday, 20 October 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

hola! is this M of nyc? are you in town?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 20 October 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

I live here now! I will fill you in at the meet-up.

libary, Thursday, 20 October 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

awesome.

so thursday oct 27. time? place?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 20 October 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I may be able to get there, my soon to be new job wants me to start the 26th, and I am going to try and do that & crash at a friend's until I find a place, and also this way I wouldn't have to miss a Halloween party in Baltimore next weekend.. Dudes, I am so thrilled, I am soon to stop being broke and unemployed and the salary isn't bad at all. hooray.

Ally that is hilarious. I am planning to frequently wear these boots of mine, uh, they are Kenneth Cole so acceptably generic urban footwear, but they really want to be combat boots and are great with black lacy tights. OHNOES, fashion goth, oops I did it again.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 20 October 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 20 October 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 20 October 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)
