I can't believe Pike watches NFL. The South/his dad is rubbing off on him.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:13 (eighteen years ago)
He does. Lots. He love the Titans but often proclaims that they're a bunch of "bums."
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:14 (eighteen years ago)
WANT BIGGER PICTURES. I can't see a thing of the bull terrier mix....
I know!! It's pose looks so cute too - from what I can see of it!
― ENBB, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:15 (eighteen years ago)
Unacceptable. I could handle the footy, I even learned to like it. But if you're okay with American football, yr a better woman than me.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:15 (eighteen years ago)
oops - its not "it's" xpost to self
Mind you, I knit a lot (i.e. all the time), so I'm usually on the couch anyway, so whatever is on, is on. He watches A LOT of hockey now which is b/c of me. I even ordered the fancy hockey package from cable so I can have my constant rustbelt connection.
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:18 (eighteen years ago)
Good on you! Mmmm hockey....

GO PUPPIES
― La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:22 (eighteen years ago)
two things i'm not looking forward to: kitty halftime (yawn) and the deluge of abused animal commercials apl runs during the whole program. i have to leave the room or else i get depressed and tearful.
― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:28 (eighteen years ago)
this is biff (my large cat) watching the kitty halftime show:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/38/73964793_9b5b382ea6.jpg
entertainment for everyone!
(ok, so he was watching a dog show when that picture was taken, but the same thing happens)
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:31 (eighteen years ago)
Me too. That David Duchovny one just about killed me.

― ENBB, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:33 (eighteen years ago)
IIRC, I ended up crying last year during the commercials, and I didn't even have PMS.
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:33 (eighteen years ago)
my bf found me sobbing in front of the tv once during the ugly dog show because one of the contestants had a heartwrenching backstory.
― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:34 (eighteen years ago)
I can't watch "Animal Precinct" anymore. The show ends with me summoning my cats to the couch while I sob and proclaim, "I'll never turn you out!"
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:36 (eighteen years ago)
all of those animal police shows are bad news. and that new one about the "last chance" rehabilitation facility/shelter? i started tearing up during the credits (the credits!) and banned myself from watching it.
― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:38 (eighteen years ago)
whenever animal cops has some heartbreaking rescue that ends with "the animals were feral and had to be euthanised" i get really upset.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:39 (eighteen years ago)
omg. I haven't seen that one yet, thank God. xpost.
― ENBB, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:40 (eighteen years ago)
in the only animal rescue show i watched, horatio (great dane found running wild) had to be euthanized at the end bcz he was too aggressive. the camera showed him going into the kill room! that was my first and last experience with that genre.
― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:42 (eighteen years ago)
ok, i should stop being such a downer on the puppy bowl thread. yay puppies!
― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:44 (eighteen years ago)
I used to volunteer at a city animal shelter, and I magically didn't adopt any pets while I was there. I don't know how I did it. I have one really sad story, which I will refrain from telling. But, I will tell you that when these two older cats that came in together (older cats generally didn't get adopted) got adopted by this cute couple, all the cat volunteers cheered and teared up a bit. It was great!
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:45 (eighteen years ago)
i really want to start fostering dogs (in preparation for actually getting one sommmmmmmetime soon)...does anyone have any recommendations about this?
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:45 (eighteen years ago)
lucky! i would love to be able to foster. maybe try here:

or else maybe call barc?

kitty halftime is pretty boring if kittens leave you cold (i know; i'm abnormal).
― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:51 (eighteen years ago)
oh man ny-petrescue has some serious cuties
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:54 (eighteen years ago)
i forced myself not to look.
― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:55 (eighteen years ago)
bell, i think it depends on the shelter. i know some places like to make sure your housing situation is up to snuff first (not saying that yours isn't, obv., but i've seen some whack regulations like "must own residence"). i think, though, it varies from place to place.
i completely, 100% recommend volunteering at a shelter. dog-walking and socializing was the best! i grew up with a schnauzer, and was used to smaller to medium breeds. it was a little bit of a leap, but i started walking the bigger dogs at the city shelter, and almost came home with a pitbull mix named walter. he was the coolest dog. he got adopted by a family w/ a yard, so it was all good.

have you done dog-walking at barc, bell? i think might do it this evening after all of this dog talk.

is walking dogs the worst part of having dogs?
― Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:29 (eighteen years ago)
as the person on morning (6am) and afternoon (3-4 pm) poop duty in chicago in the winter, i would say yes.
― La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:32 (eighteen years ago)
but it's not so bad. i think rain is way worse than snow. picking up the poop is no big deal.
in fact, i'm about to walk these mutts right now.
― La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)
picking up poop vs cleaning cat box
― Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:35 (eighteen years ago)
cleaning cat box is really easy when you have awesoem litter. i am in love with fresh step so much that mr. pike has renamed biff "DJ FRESH STEP".
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:37 (eighteen years ago)
generally, you just scoop the poop up with a trowel or a scooper and you're done. emptying out a big box filled with shit and urine-soaked clumps is way worse, imo. having to look after two giant cats who pooped about 9 times a day traumatized me.
― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:37 (eighteen years ago)
i will never go back to other brands. /end free advertising
at least with the shitbox you don't have to go outside in the winter or carry a bag of poop with you. the box gets taken care of in 5 minutes.
i can't remember what kind of litter i use, it's the stuff in the orange boxes? my friends got some hippie shit that you're supposed to flush down the toilet.
― Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:40 (eighteen years ago)
the crystal cat litter is the best. it absorbs the pee so it doesnt stink or get clumpy.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

I can't watch this anymore because I don't have cable and they don't actually do anything so it gets pretty boring. That said, is there a pug?
