Mind you, I knit a lot (i.e. all the time), so I'm usually on the couch anyway, so whatever is on, is on. He watches A LOT of hockey now which is b/c of me. I even ordered the fancy hockey package from cable so I can have my constant rustbelt connection.

two things i'm not looking forward to: kitty halftime (yawn) and the deluge of abused animal commercials apl runs during the whole program. i have to leave the room or else i get depressed and tearful.

IIRC, I ended up crying last year during the commercials, and I didn't even have PMS.

my bf found me sobbing in front of the tv once during the ugly dog show because one of the contestants had a heartwrenching backstory.

I can't watch "Animal Precinct" anymore. The show ends with me summoning my cats to the couch while I sob and proclaim, "I'll never turn you out!"

all of those animal police shows are bad news. and that new one about the "last chance" rehabilitation facility/shelter? i started tearing up during the credits (the credits!) and banned myself from watching it.

whenever animal cops has some heartbreaking rescue that ends with "the animals were feral and had to be euthanised" i get really upset.

in the only animal rescue show i watched, horatio (great dane found running wild) had to be euthanized at the end bcz he was too aggressive. the camera showed him going into the kill room! that was my first and last experience with that genre.

I used to volunteer at a city animal shelter, and I magically didn't adopt any pets while I was there. I don't know how I did it. I have one really sad story, which I will refrain from telling. But, I will tell you that when these two older cats that came in together (older cats generally didn't get adopted) got adopted by this cute couple, all the cat volunteers cheered and teared up a bit. It was great!

i really want to start fostering dogs (in preparation for actually getting one sommmmmmmetime soon)...does anyone have any recommendations about this?

bell, i think it depends on the shelter. i know some places like to make sure your housing situation is up to snuff first (not saying that yours isn't, obv., but i've seen some whack regulations like "must own residence"). i think, though, it varies from place to place.

i completely, 100% recommend volunteering at a shelter. dog-walking and socializing was the best! i grew up with a schnauzer, and was used to smaller to medium breeds. it was a little bit of a leap, but i started walking the bigger dogs at the city shelter, and almost came home with a pitbull mix named walter. he was the coolest dog. he got adopted by a family w/ a yard, so it was all good.

is walking dogs the worst part of having dogs?

as the person on morning (6am) and afternoon (3-4 pm) poop duty in chicago in the winter, i would say yes.

but it's not so bad. i think rain is way worse than snow. picking up the poop is no big deal.

in fact, i'm about to walk these mutts right now.

cleaning cat box is really easy when you have awesoem litter. i am in love with fresh step so much that mr. pike has renamed biff "DJ FRESH STEP".

generally, you just scoop the poop up with a trowel or a scooper and you're done. emptying out a big box filled with shit and urine-soaked clumps is way worse, imo. having to look after two giant cats who pooped about 9 times a day traumatized me.

i will never go back to other brands. /end free advertising

at least with the shitbox you don't have to go outside in the winter or carry a bag of poop with you. the box gets taken care of in 5 minutes.

i can't remember what kind of litter i use, it's the stuff in the orange boxes? my friends got some hippie shit that you're supposed to flush down the toilet.

the crystal cat litter is the best. it absorbs the pee so it doesnt stink or get clumpy.
