What with all the postponements, City beat Everton on Monday and they're top at Christmas

for the first time since 1927 or something according to the bbc earlier.
― À la recherche du temps Pardew (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 18 December 2010 23:31 (fifteen years ago)
Gah. It's a remarkable turnaround for the crisis-club-before-Chelsea anyway. They've been top of the Third Division more recently than 1927 of course.

xmas 27 was shit iirc
ramsay mcdonald fedexed a box of his own shit to alf fotheringdale, salford polenta magnate and a city nonexec, in protest at their conniving ways
popularity was only restored when bert trautmann renounced hitler and delighted postwar crowds with his agility both on the field and in the music halls

Football stars including John Terry and Frank Lampard were snooped on by Greenpeace protesters -because they drive "Chelsea tractors". Wayne Rooney was also targeted for having a 4x4 as a status symbol, according to former MI5 agent Chris Penhaligon - who was recruited by the sneaky eco-warriors to do the spying. The astonishing claims come in his new book One Blood, where he reveals activists compiled detailed dossiers on stars and their WAGs who drive gas-guzzling 4x4s. The files included where they lived, trained, shopped and even bought petrol. Former soldier Chris said: "The plan was to clamp their luxury 4x4s, tie themselves to the vehicles or block them in. "I spent quite a bit of time at Cobham, where Chelsea train, and Stamford Bridge, targeting players who had 4x4s."Other teams were in Manchester and Liverpool in a co-ordinated attack against the top clubs."

The brightest of orange snow balls was out for PSG-Monaco last night xp, which pleased me. So much so that I scrambled about for a good few minutes trying to get the perfect stream purely to see the ball in its best glory, and thereby missed what should've been PSG's winner. WHEN GEEKERY GOES WRONG.

how does cesc compare in the ranks of inspirational captains compared to such luminaries as keane, vieira, terry, gerrard?
he is only 23, too
― No Wicked Heart Shall Prosper.rar (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 December 2010 03:16 (fifteen years ago)
not inspirational, imo. Great footballer and all, but too self-focused to be that guy as yet.
― all i gotta do is akh nachivly (darraghmac), Monday, 20 December 2010 03:17 (fifteen years ago)
none of the luminaries were 'that guy' at 23 iirc

i'm not sure 'inspirational captain' is much of a thing outside england
milan are the most successful club of recent decades, in some respects a model for how to run (though not finance) a football team, and they usually award the captaincy to the player who has been at the club the longest
it is of course a great honour, but it doesn't mean ambrosini suddenly goes from loyal utility player to monpolizing shouty 'big man', rather he seems to be merely one of a group of senior players who fulfill the functions traditionally accorded to the english 'captain'
the furore about which overvalued big four big man would hold the england captaincy was merely shuffling of deckchairs
― No Wicked Heart Shall Prosper.rar (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 December 2010 03:32 (fifteen years ago)
i dunno if you dont have a big man shoutin then how do the other guys know when to try?
Dunno how far back you are goin with milan refs, but baresi maldini and gattuso tick most captain boxes?
― all i gotta do is akh nachivly (darraghmac), Monday, 20 December 2010 03:36 (fifteen years ago)
maldini is the exact opposite of a risible caterwauler like terry.
i guess i probably do undervalue the 'inspirational' qualities of people like terry, cuz i think they're cunts and distrust the overemphasis and manipulation of 'passion' in english football.
you could see vs tottenham that terry's indefatigibility and presence do count for something, but enshrining it in the numinous role of a single captain seems stupid
chelsea is like a malign gerontocracy, senior players rutting with each other and periodic slumps which probably correspond to inane internecine wrangles. the drogba/ballack squabble of a few years ago probably happens all the time.
expect to see more rutting when tevez is 'stripped of the captaincy' and de jong/bary/kompany etc becomes the new 'big man'.
― No Wicked Heart Shall Prosper.rar (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 December 2010 03:46 (fifteen years ago)
or don't see, because english clubs are well run ships. everything subject to pr supervision, and almost no public training sessions.
― No Wicked Heart Shall Prosper.rar (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 December 2010 03:48 (fifteen years ago)
I actually want City to do this tonight.
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 December 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)
Tevez back in btw
tevez, smallest big man in the history of football, keeps the captaincy
― No Wicked Heart Shall Prosper.rar (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 December 2010 19:16 (fifteen years ago)
nb 'big man' is a concept related but not identical to 'bigness'
― No Wicked Heart Shall Prosper.rar (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 December 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)
i'm suspicious, i feel that 'big man' is, unlike 'bigness', a very broad term. i'm sure there are big men no taller than 5'5 out there.
― Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Monday, 20 December 2010 19:20 (fifteen years ago)
