The car crash bit made me jump out of my skin. Wish I liked this movie more..

Davek (davek_00), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:59 (thirteen years ago) link

oh ya that scene

but it's not like, torture porn

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 23:10 (thirteen years ago) link

it's worse than torture porn because it's like REAL looking instead of like cartoonish Saw/Hostel bullshit that you can larf at

patti ayonnaise (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 23:18 (thirteen years ago) link

it's really not that explicit iirc

everyone's covered in blood, it lasts about 30 seconds...

o ya i forgot abotu the abortion scene tho :/

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 23:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Even if it's not explicit per se, it's deployed in the most shocking of ways...obviously the most disturbing things are never so direct. See also: 127 Hours (at least IMO).

franz kaptcha (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 17 December 2010 04:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Here is Waters's list -- with commentary.

2 Enter the Void (Gaspar Noé) The best film ever about taking hallucinogenic drugs. Seizure-inducing title credits, cinematography that looks as if it were shot by a Gerhard Richter–influenced kamikaze pilot—even vagina cams. Gaspar, thank you. You’re my sweetheart.

Kind of thought Waters would be feelin Machete

Ha, the NYTimes distinguishes Noe as an "up and comer" in a recent fashion spread.

The thing abt this film is not that it's super long but that it is sooooooooooooo slooooowwwwwwlllly paced. Like it just drags it's fucking feet along in a really drug-induced stupor.

cowboy bibimbap (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 23 December 2010 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link

all the stuff that was supposed to shock just seemed hilariously bad, like a "drugs r bad" psa u see on tv but it goes on for hours

long running time + slow pace + dimestore Freud = a very poor time at the pictures

Jim Emerson, Chi Sun-Times:

Gaudiest credits sequence: "Enter the Void" (Gaspar Nöe). Of course, just because it's flashy and unwatchable doesn't make it any good.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:15 (thirteen years ago) link

What does "unwatchable" mean, given that he presumably doesn't mean it literally?

Alba, Saturday, 8 January 2011 06:27 (thirteen years ago) link

i watched the fuck out of that credits sequence.

i probably watched them on youtube a dozen times before i saw the movie.

This movie. Wow (in a HaHa! way). All that time spent with these morons and the payoff is A Gigantic Penis Head?!

i don't remember hearing Throbbing Gristle or Coil in the film, but they've got their own title cards right there in the credits at 1:05-1:06.

Tarantino was a fan of the credits:

"Yesterday in the process of announcing his favorite movies of 2010, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino had this to say about Enter the Void, which he ranked as the 10th best movie of the year: Hands down best credit scene of the year . Maybe best credit scene of the decade. One of the greatest in cinema history."

i was pretty blah on this on first watch, probably a 2.5/5, but i can't help but want to see it again.

Dogtooth. Then again I don't like Enter the Void.

Gukbe, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Though if you're like me that won't matter because of that whole "shorter" thing.

Gukbe, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I caught this on Netflix last night. I was pretty impressed although the last hour dragged badly. My favorite part was the whole sequence of flashbacks to his childhood and the days leading up to his death. That part had the most coherent storytelling plus tons of great cinematography. Also, the whole long scene going from his apartment to the club was very well done. There were so many places that left me wondering how they actually achieved particular shots and effects. I'd love to see some of these techniques deployed in the service of a stronger script.

As it moved on to the endless shots of hovering over the city and then the very long Love Hotel sequence, I started to lose interest, but I could easily sit through the first hour and a half again.

Moodles, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

This is the most exciting film I have seen in my whole life. It didn't feel like two and a half hours because I was stunned and totally absorbed with this idea of a psychedelic out of body death trip. On paper I wouldn't have bought into this concept which is usually quite shite in movies but Noe makes the silent witness to events after his own death section a mix of neon hypnotic psychedelia, realist mundanity and extremity. It is a new approach to film-making to me because I cannot think of any film to compare it to.

The opening credits have set a new standard for creating excitement before the movie has started. In my youth I got into LSD + DMT and had to laugh at how Oscar kept asking the dealer if he had any DMT yet? It used to be very difficult to get that shit where I lived. But this is more than just a "druggy artporn film" (thats what my girlfriend called it before she stomped off to bed after the first hour). I keep thinking about this movie and cant get it out of my head. There are some moments when you wonder if he is just coasting with standard arthouse extremity (graphic sex, graphic car crash, vagi-cam and graphic abortion) but even so he has created a movie that can be expierienced like a great album. Just so exciting.

Enter The Void was my first Noe movie and I have now bought Irriversible which I will probably have to watch alone because my partner will call me a perv.

All I know is that a 9 minute scene caused a mass walkout at Cannes. A lady who writes for the Guardian was recently describing how uncomfortable it was watching Black Swan with her mother during the scene when Kunis goes down on Portman.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Wednesday, 2 February 2011 21:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Love love love this movie.

Is the 9 minute scene the dmt screensaver trip in the beginning? Amazing the cojones to take that from "wow, neat" to "ok this has really been going on for a while now" to LOLZZZZ

Hadrian VIII, Wednesday, 2 February 2011 22:56 (thirteen years ago) link

"wow, neat" to "ok this has really been going on for a while now" to LOLZZZZ

that's kind of the whole movie.

Damo's talking about the 9 minute rape scene in Irreversible i do believe.

circa1916, Wednesday, 2 February 2011 23:10 (thirteen years ago) link

No Hadrian I was referring to a scene from Irreversible, which I haven't seen yet.

I like the way he makes what should be tedious self-indulgence into visceral eye-candy. Like the scene you mentioned, it is brilliant and switches between overwhelming fucked out of your brain-ness and back to reality in a convincing manner.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Wednesday, 2 February 2011 23:29 (thirteen years ago) link

A friend watched this at home and like it, tho it literally made him puke.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 February 2011 01:37 (thirteen years ago) link

I wondered if the short scene in Black Swan of Natalie Portman heading toward Lincoln Center is a little hat-tip to this movie, it being shot from behind her head and all.
