That Zadie Smith write-up on FB: one of those long-winded essays where someone badmouths a new technology or fad, and only out of the side of their mouth admits that, yes, they engage in it too, and all they're going to say about how and why they haven't quit (despite the fact that it is, according to them, ruining society) is that they are "addicted" to it.

It's like its own genre.

"This ______ is kind of terrible, and is dehumanizing, ruining our civilization etc. Yeah, I do it/love it too, though (it's addicting!)"

It's not that I even disagree with what they hate or are suspicious about, but at least explain what makes it fascinating and helpful to millions of people -- including the author of these essays.

It's hard to maintain an air of superiority that way though.

I read it last week, and my memory told me she said she came back to the site once or twice (maybe that was another article?)

but the point stands regarding articles like that: they skim over why the the subject is so popular or interesting to people, and many times the authors admit to still indulging in it.

its a sad form for sure particularly when people not that old indulge in it

I actually don't know how ridiculous it really is - I think fb has such a solid hold on the social network market right now, I mean ilx types might move on to something else cooler, but my grandmother is on fb ffs and prob isn't gonna switch to something else anytime soon. they (and google) are like microsoft in the 90s.

the valuation seems crazy more for... how they are ever going to be that profitable even if they do stay #1 social network.....fb must have some big 'plans' beyond maxing revenue from a non subscrip fee model

yeah i feel like 'you never know' is exactly the attitude of the dumb money that will be left holding the bag

I just don't see a transition from fb to something else happening w/ half a billion people - maybe over an extended time period, but in the next 10 years? it's not like friendster, myspace etc. cause those were younger internet savvy people. so there might be a mac/linux of social networking that takes a bite from the market, I don't see a mass exodus cause the exodus-types aren't the majority of fb users anymore.

I think the FB valuation makes sense as long as the way our 'economy works' holds - like FB is the holy grail of information for advertisers, if FB plays its cards right they can parcel out that info for huge $$$ while reforming and reshaping the public's conception of privacy so that we become cool with Gilette showing you ads because you have a beard in your FB profile pic
