Hey Norns it costs way more than $12 to go see the Mets lose, just think abt it that way.

i have no idea what Morbs is trying to say?

da puppier (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 12 December 2010 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

imo he's saying he wants to see this movie that he already knows he hates but he doesn't want to pay $12 to see it.

he's also saying you can't be srs when you call it movie of the year and then declare watching it an exhausting exercise you wish not to repeat in the same breath. maybe if he paid $12 he would know wtf you're talking about.

also: this never made it in theaters here so I had to watch it on my laptop. >:-(

It was a visceral, emotional grueling experience for a lot of reasons (the flickering lights in a dark theater; all the huge scares of the repeated car crashes; the sheer length of the fucking thing). I'm glad I did it but wouldn't want to subject myself to all that shit again. Why is that a contentious position to take. Like I think Schindler's List is a great movie too but I don't want to snack on a Twizzler and watch the DVD before I go to bed

gr80 gets me, the poor fella.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 12 December 2010 17:32 (thirteen years ago) link

also Schindler's List is a pretty easy-to-take Holocaust movie. (J Hoberman and others damned it for being so)

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 12 December 2010 17:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Would love to see J. Ho on Salon Kitty.

benanas foster (Eric H.), Sunday, 12 December 2010 17:47 (thirteen years ago) link

(Except there's really no Holocaust to speak of in that one.)

benanas foster (Eric H.), Sunday, 12 December 2010 17:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Morbs I may get you but I get Whiney too.

I'm actually looking forward to watching it a few more times myself.

u aint messin w/ my dengue (gr8080), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 21:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Does the phrase "the most excruciating sit in recent cinematic memory" apply to this film? How so?

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 21:34 (thirteen years ago) link

oh yeah

patti ayonnaise (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 21:54 (thirteen years ago) link

1. Super long
2. Flickering strobey bullshit in a dark theater
3. Lots o gore and shock
4. Lots of surprises
5. Bummerz galore

patti ayonnaise (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link

adam you should know that Whiney called it "film of the year" too

u aint messin w/ my dengue (gr8080), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I know. Sounds good, except for the gore/shock, which I dont care for in moviez.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:53 (thirteen years ago) link

its not very goreshocky

The car crash bit made me jump out of my skin. Wish I liked this movie more..

Davek (davek_00), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:59 (thirteen years ago) link

oh ya that scene

but it's not like, torture porn

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 23:10 (thirteen years ago) link

it's worse than torture porn because it's like REAL looking instead of like cartoonish Saw/Hostel bullshit that you can larf at

patti ayonnaise (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 23:18 (thirteen years ago) link

it's really not that explicit iirc

everyone's covered in blood, it lasts about 30 seconds...

o ya i forgot abotu the abortion scene tho :/

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 23:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Even if it's not explicit per se, it's deployed in the most shocking of ways...obviously the most disturbing things are never so direct. See also: 127 Hours (at least IMO).

franz kaptcha (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 17 December 2010 04:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Here is Waters's list -- with commentary.

2 Enter the Void (Gaspar Noé) The best film ever about taking hallucinogenic drugs. Seizure-inducing title credits, cinematography that looks as if it were shot by a Gerhard Richter–influenced kamikaze pilot—even vagina cams. Gaspar, thank you. You’re my sweetheart.

would like a calmer set (Eazy), Friday, 17 December 2010 04:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Kind of thought Waters would be feelin Machete

Ha, the NYTimes distinguishes Noe as an "up and comer" in a recent fashion spread.

old man yells at cloud computing (am0n), Thursday, 23 December 2010 18:20 (thirteen years ago) link

The thing abt this film is not that it's super long but that it is sooooooooooooo slooooowwwwwwlllly paced. Like it just drags it's fucking feet along in a really drug-induced stupor.

cowboy bibimbap (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 23 December 2010 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link

all the stuff that was supposed to shock just seemed hilariously bad, like a "drugs r bad" psa u see on tv but it goes on for hours

long running time + slow pace + dimestore Freud = a very poor time at the pictures

Jim Emerson, Chi Sun-Times:

Gaudiest credits sequence: "Enter the Void" (Gaspar Nöe). Of course, just because it's flashy and unwatchable doesn't make it any good.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:15 (thirteen years ago) link

What does "unwatchable" mean, given that he presumably doesn't mean it literally?

Alba, Saturday, 8 January 2011 06:27 (thirteen years ago) link

i watched the fuck out of that credits sequence.

i probably watched them on youtube a dozen times before i saw the movie.

i don't remember hearing Throbbing Gristle or Coil in the film, but they've got their own title cards right there in the credits at 1:05-1:06.

Tarantino was a fan of the credits:

"Yesterday in the process of announcing his favorite movies of 2010, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino had this to say about Enter the Void, which he ranked as the 10th best movie of the year: Hands down best credit scene of the year . Maybe best credit scene of the decade. One of the greatest in cinema history."
