Ok this is fucking retarded:
http://almerica.blogspot.com/2008/09/podcaster-rejeceted-because-it.html

You can't make an iPhone app if it duplicates existing functionality? WTF? The chat apps do what iChat does, frinstance.

-- (stet), Friday, 12 September 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

sounds like an illegal move by apple to me

RIP (cozwn), Friday, 12 September 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

I guess the only thing that can be said for it is that they perhaps mean "you don't get to make your own iTunes store", rather than talking about the iTunes app. But even so.

-- (stet), Friday, 12 September 2008 20:25 (seventeen years ago)

I'm guessing they don't want people inserting files into the iTunes database

According to the Frotz code page, you can upgrade and still use outside zmachine files, providing you transfer them in thru the build-in browser.

In other words, zshare transfers allegedly should still work. Haven't tried it yet, tho.

kingfish, Saturday, 13 September 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

I checked with the developer before upgrading. Works very well.

You touched me officer, sorry (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:03 (seventeen years ago)

Apparently Firmware 2.1 breaks the current version of Last.fm, but there's going to have an upgrade available in less than a week.

J, Sunday, 14 September 2008 13:22 (seventeen years ago)

Does anyone else have an intermittent problem with the screen not rotating in Safari? Mine still does it in 2.1.

You touched me officer, sorry (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 15 September 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago)

k, apparently the accelerometer can't get an accurate reading when you're walking, which DER FREDDIE makes sense.

Did any of you have to upgrade to iTunes 8.0 by chance? I tried to sync the phone last night, but iTunes crashed, and I got a pop-up IE window from Microsoft support (lol) saying i had to upgrade to the latest iTunes. Once I did, it was fine, but no one mentioned it here, so I assume either everything either already had iTunes 8.0 or I was an unlucky with the random crash.

The most annoying thing about launching iTunes 8.0 for the first time is that it defaults to the thumbnail view of your music database first, which means you have to wait the hour or so for iTunes to grab *all* the album artwork before you can even switch to the original list view, which is all I care for anyway.

Also, Genius Sidebar? Apple's attempt at their own last.fm? (I didn't mean to turn it on.)

After all that shit, the firmware 2.1 thing worked out. No problems thus far.

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 15 September 2008 02:31 (seventeen years ago)

Genius is great, it just doesn't work yet.

You touched me officer, sorry (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 15 September 2008 02:39 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, also annoying: you can't turn off "genre" anymore in the browser. wth

the valves of houston (gbx), Monday, 15 September 2008 02:50 (seventeen years ago)

If you're on Mac, go into terminal and type

defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-genre-when-browsing -bool FALSE

-- (stet), Monday, 15 September 2008 02:56 (seventeen years ago)

Genius is great, it just doesn't work yet.

So, it's basically NNW then?

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 15 September 2008 03:06 (seventeen years ago)

Haha. Functionally it's fine, but the algorithm needs some time/work to produce effective matches.

You touched me officer, sorry (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 15 September 2008 03:09 (seventeen years ago)

Does it log what you've played a la last.fm?

I know others like recommendations, but I find auto-recommendations mostly useless. :/

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 15 September 2008 03:12 (seventeen years ago)

thanks stet!

still annoying that they took that option out of the GUI

the valves of houston (gbx), Monday, 15 September 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago)

I wish they'd roll out last.fm internationally.

You touched me officer, sorry (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 15 September 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)

I went to the Apple store today and got a fresh iPhone since mine had one of those little cracks in it. Went well.

haha. amazing that pretty much the very first third-party app is still essentially useless.

s1ocki, Monday, 15 September 2008 05:02 (seventeen years ago)

at least for my purposes (which include using it)

s1ocki, Monday, 15 September 2008 05:02 (seventeen years ago)

It was good before this last revision.

You touched me officer, sorry (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 15 September 2008 06:53 (seventeen years ago)

so. upgraded to 2.1 ... and the backup during the first sync took longer than ever before.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 15 September 2008 11:12 (seventeen years ago)

Do another. Mine's dead quick now.

You touched me officer, sorry (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 15 September 2008 11:12 (seventeen years ago)

Backup times seem to be proportional to the amount of "stuff" that occurs on your iPhone since the last sync. What "stuff" takes longer than not is the question. Otherwise, it's better to backup often than never, especially for appaddicts like myself, so get used to it or get something else instead.
