K1t - I do like the TMBG page on facebook, they announce sales of their merch, and post clips to songs and live bits and whatnot.

Ditto a few other bands: I do find announcements of new releases useful.

the Dangerous Minds site hosts video clips of music, movies, etc, and it's updated frequently. The current top of the list is a youtube clip of "32 sublime minutes of neil young performing in 1971."

There's a whole thing you have to do with filters. Wait there.

yeh you have to dl the filter sets.

If you get AdBlock Plus, it should automatically suggest you a filter list to download once you activate it. That list gets rid of most ads (including FB ones), but you can also manually block the ones that aren't filtered by the list.

This will block everything Facebook, including outside sites feeding your details to Facebook:

If you just want to block Facebook ads, right-click a Facebook ad, do the adblock thing and choose the option that replaces most of the URL with a *

oh ok, it was the filter SUBSCRIPTION that i needed to set up.

Go tools>Adblock Plus>Filters>Add Filter Subscription. Then choose EasyList (USA).

i swear this was automatic on every other computer ive used adblock on.

"1) Take a screenshot of your Facebook profile page, open it up in Photoshop
2) Create 6 selections (1 for the "default" pic on the left, and 5 for the little image preview boxes)
3) Use these selections to create a "clipping mask" with the large image that you want to use, arrange/scale image as necessary
4) Crop and individually save each of the 6 images
5) Upload, tag, and arrange the images accordingly

That Zadie Smith write-up on FB: one of those long-winded essays where someone badmouths a new technology or fad, and only out of the side of their mouth admits that, yes, they engage in it too, and all they're going to say about how and why they haven't quit (despite the fact that it is, according to them, ruining society) is that they are "addicted" to it.

It's like its own genre.

"This ______ is kind of terrible, and is dehumanizing, ruining our civilization etc. Yeah, I do it/love it too, though (it's addicting!)"

It's not that I even disagree with what they hate or are suspicious about, but at least explain what makes it fascinating and helpful to millions of people -- including the author of these essays.

It's hard to maintain an air of superiority that way though.
