there are pictures under people's names now iirc

Yeah the new profile is... weird. I hope it wont force itself on everyone but I suppose it eventually will.
― manic pixie dream girl phenomenon (Trayce), Monday, 6 December 2010 04:02 (fifteen years ago)
what i read is that you dont need to opt in now if you dont want to but eventually youll get the new layout whether youre into it or not, which is just sorta how these things go
― markers, Monday, 6 December 2010 04:04 (fifteen years ago)
it's nagl, for real
― steendriver DUMB BIG, his HOOS got HOOS (dayo), Monday, 6 December 2010 04:07 (fifteen years ago)
People whining about Facebook changes (I don't mean you lot) is hilarious btw. Usually comes from people who (a) are frightened of change and (b) think they're entitled to make demands despite the whole thing being free.
― Nmutua Canamla (Schlafsack), Monday, 6 December 2010 04:09 (fifteen years ago)
Oh man, I've missed whining about facebook.
This change is a little more unsettling cos njow it lays out a line of yr photos (instead of one) and neatly says HI THIS PERSONS NAME IS BLAH THEY WERE BORN ON BLAH AND LIVE IN BLAHTOWN in bold right across the pagetop.
It better still damn respect my "dont show my DOB" flag or else fuck a facebook, I'm gone.
― manic pixie dream girl phenomenon (Trayce), Monday, 6 December 2010 04:33 (fifteen years ago)
lol u old
― mookieproof, Monday, 6 December 2010 04:42 (fifteen years ago)
Trayce, you can still have your birthday set to "Only Me"
you can also set more restrictive stuff on the pictures so they only show up for you, which is how i have things set up
― markers, Monday, 6 December 2010 04:44 (fifteen years ago)
(i.e. my age)
― mookieproof, Monday, 6 December 2010 04:45 (fifteen years ago)
The cartoon thing is funny to me, cos last night I watched an old David Cross routine and he says "Guys, we need to tell everyone about the Aids ribbons. Cos they aren't working!"
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 6 December 2010 05:25 (fifteen years ago)
What bugs me about the new profile design (especially the info right at the time) is that it seems geared more towards strangers, and not friends, looking at your profile.
Went to college at, lives in, in a relationship with, speaks the following languages et al are stuff for snoops and potential employers, but most of my "friends" don't need to be told that, and those friends that don't know probably wouldn't care to know.
― Cunga, Monday, 6 December 2010 08:38 (fifteen years ago)

― Cunga, Monday, 6 December 2010 08:40 (fifteen years ago)
yeah it basically looks like a resume of your personal life
― steendriver DUMB BIG, his HOOS got HOOS (dayo), Monday, 6 December 2010 09:06 (fifteen years ago)
I went ahead and deleted all that stuff now. I was fine with it being on my info page, where any friend who wanted to see it could find it, but I def don't want it right up top. Gone.
Also, why did the friends/boxes column get narrower just so the advertising column could get wider? Are we still living in an 800x600 world?
― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 6 December 2010 09:15 (fifteen years ago)
my album of links seems to have disappeared w/the new profile wtf? and i can't seem to get it back? that's where i linked to my work, about the only concession i made to using fbook in a professional sort of way. UGH.
meanwhile the cartoons thing is so tremendously lol. one of my more amazing friends changed her profile picture to the mugshot of baby p's mother, and it was so hilarious to see "10 of your friends have changed their profile picture", and to have that pop up in the middle of all the cartoon characters.
then fb fucking deleted it!!!!
― lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Monday, 6 December 2010 12:04 (fifteen years ago)
I hate the cartoon picture against child abuse thing, and don't even get me started on the vague status updates about sex or your bra to "raise awareness" about breast cancer, but I do use FB to link to fundraising info for orgs I support or local issues that need some kind of voter input, etc.
I'm afraid of the new profile layout. I really want to get to the point where I delete my FB account, because I'm kind of tired of it, but it's kind of like organized crime or drug addiction. Once you realize how far you're in it, it's almost impossible to get out.

ATTENTION:Thegroup asking everyone to change their profile picture to a cartoon character, is actually a group of Pedophiles. There doing it because kids will accept their friend request faster if they see a cartoon picture. It has nothing to do with any Child charities. IT'S ON ...TONIGHT'S NEWS. Copy & Paste this on to your status, Let everyoneknow
ahahahahahah
― ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Monday, 6 December 2010 14:18 (fifteen years ago)
Jenny, believe me, it's not that hard. just delete it, set yourself free. think i'm keeping mine over the holidays for whatever event invites might come around then i'm done with this crap.
― sonderangerbot, Monday, 6 December 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)
My biggest concern is the loss of updates from different orgs/groups I like that don't have websites. And I guess I'm still somewhat curious about my high school classmates that are still trickling in (like the guy who just showed up in my "ppl you may know" list with a giant-Wesley Willis-esque headbutt scar on his forehead and a message on his wall from a woman who will never marry him because she refuses to change for him as requested). So conflicted, you guys.

Has anyone noticed the subtle little change where, if you look at someone's profile direct, it now displays a "preview" of each comment they made on people's posts? I cant decide if this is horrible or complete lulz.
― manic pixie dream girl phenomenon (Trayce), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 08:31 (fifteen years ago)
hey Facebook users
anyone have links to pages “for” something (publisher, record label, organisation, media entity) that you’ve actually found valuable and useful, and well done? words about what you find good about it also welcome.

K1t - I do like the TMBG page on facebook, they announce sales of their merch, and post clips to songs and live bits and whatnot.
Ditto a few other bands: I do find announcements of new releases useful.

the Dangerous Minds site hosts video clips of music, movies, etc, and it's updated frequently. The current top of the list is a youtube clip of "32 sublime minutes of neil young performing in 1971."

There's a whole thing you have to do with filters. Wait there.
― unintentional boob pic (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 9 December 2010 09:23 (fifteen years ago)
yeh you have to dl the filter sets.
― manic pixie dream girl phenomenon (Trayce), Thursday, 9 December 2010 09:27 (fifteen years ago)
If you get AdBlock Plus, it should automatically suggest you a filter list to download once you activate it. That list gets rid of most ads (including FB ones), but you can also manually block the ones that aren't filtered by the list.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 9 December 2010 09:30 (fifteen years ago)
This will block everything Facebook, including outside sites feeding your details to Facebook:
http://lifehacker.com/5542041/block-sites-from-using-your-facebook-login-with-adblock-plus
If you just want to block Facebook ads, right-click a Facebook ad, do the adblock thing and choose the option that replaces most of the URL with a *

Basically Facebook is an insidious bastard that needs serious fortification if you want to keep Fuckerburg's nose out of your stuff.

I just 'friended' my daughter on facebook.
Or did she friend me?
Still....
― Mark G, Thursday, 9 December 2010 10:37 (fifteen years ago)
oh ok, it was the filter SUBSCRIPTION that i needed to set up.
Go tools>Adblock Plus>Filters>Add Filter Subscription. Then choose EasyList (USA).
i swear this was automatic on every other computer ive used adblock on.
i was starting to have a panic attack looking at facebook ads

now instead of just saying "So and so commented on so and so's status" it gives a little teaser of the comment itself.
i can't explain why this is not OK, but it isn't for some reason.
