you know, a google search for "drink whiskey day" yields 14 results, one of them a chicago ilx thread. lol.

I stumbled into a DC Whiskey Week tasting be coincidence at Bourbon last night, free tastings of:
Smooth Ambler White Whiskey (West Virginia, 100 proof) - a pretty delicious moonshine. Lots of corn on the nose but a really bright taste, almost like a pisco. Great for cocktails. They also make a really unusual gin.
Redemption Rye (Kentucky, 92 proof) - 95% rye, super spicy of course. Not too nuanced but it was only a 2-year old bottling and retails around $26, so what can you expect. This was one of my favorites of the night just because the rye content made it so unique.
Redemption Bourbon (Kentucky, 92 proof) - eh, nothing special.
High West Rendezvous Rye (Utah, 92 proof) - blend of a 16-year old rye and a 6-year old rye, both with very high rye contents. Great stuff, very long finish. Not filtered, but still cut. Wish it had been bottled at a higher proof. There were a couple older High West ryes, too, but I think bottling a 16 or 21 year old rye at 92 proof is a crime.
Willett 8-year "Coco Loco" Bourbon (Kentucky, 123 proof) - as usual, the Willett bottlings are really special. The Coco Loco was worth seeking out but the real star was the...
Willett 8-year "Suspension Bridge" Bourbon (Kentucky, 128 proof) - holy shit, probably my favorite Willett expression since the 16-year Malt Bomb. Huge flavor with a good burn but also a nice balance and strong finish. Less sweet than the Coco Loco. All the Willett bottlings (except for the Pot Still) get selected by individual barrel, so there are less than 200 bottles of each. I'm going to grab a bottle of the Suspension Bridge quick.
I feel very lucky to have a bar as good as Bourbon in DC. Also grateful for DC's relatively open liquor import and distribution regulations, that kind of stuff isn't visible but it makes an enormous difference to consumers.

good stuff!
the mini quality rye drought we were having up here seems to be over big time; seen both rittenhouse and sazerac in multiple stores recently. i guess i can stop hoarding?

based on what I read in this thread, I decided to try some rye whiskey. I like drinking whiskey neat or with one ice cube, depending on the weather, so I asked the lady at the whiskey store for a good sipping rye. For my price range, she recommended Michter's single barrel. I liked it quite a bit, and am looking forward to my next bottle of rye. Has anyone had High West or Copper Fox?
― rockapads, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 17:06 (fifteen years ago)
not tried either--pls post thoughts if you pick 'em up
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 18:35 (fifteen years ago)
High West is supposed to be good, but I can't ever remember trying it. Copper Fox is a young and extremely harsh whiskey that I would recommend avoiding.

I have been sharing links and previews of Bulleit Rye with friends for months! It is not yet available here, which sucks. It's distilled by LDI, who were the source of (local favorite) Templeton Rye's original batch.

Brought home a couple of bottles of Suntory Yamazaki from japan. Opened the 12 y/o last night - delicious. Better than the glenfiddich I'm used to
i picked up a 10 or 12 yr for a friend's birthday (didn't get the midleton as i promised upthread) and it's really great.

came across an open tasting bottle of the Bulleit Rye at a friend's bar tonight! 90 proof, 95% rye mash, but not so spicy as the similarly rye-heavy Redemption Rye. Really round flavors upfront with a sugar sweetness (though not nearly so much as a bourbon) quickly leaving a cinnamon finish. Drinks well alone, will mix well too and it'll be hard to beat in the price range.
― I DIED, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 03:38 (fifteen years ago)
i really like redemption rye, but it IS quite lively. really wanna try this now!!
― tehresa, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 03:40 (fifteen years ago)
really should taste before i say anything but i am extremely skeptical of these bottles coming out with a 90+ percent rye mashbill

Can anyone help me find a whiskey that I had once? It was a really expensive whiskey, the guy who owned the bar was an old friend of my parents. I think it's called wedgewood, maybe wildwood? I've never really cared for whiskey but that was about the smoothest liquor I've ever tasted.
― Iris, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 04:08 (fifteen years ago)
was it some kind of Woodford Reserve maybe? Just going by the name.
― rockapads, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 04:40 (fifteen years ago)
That could be it. I seem to remember it being a Canadian whiskey but I really have no idea. Woodford Reserve seems to be the one of the few that starts with a W

so i discovered a distillery about an hour from here that has 'bottling days' where you can participate in bottling! this weekend's full and i'm out of town for the next one, but i'm totally psyched at the idea that i could learn how to bottle whiskey!
also, my abc dude said that maybe they will get bulleit at the next 'sales quarter' which begins may 1. apparently they can only add new items when a new quarter starts.
― coming from me, who has written many bestsellers (tehresa), Monday, 11 April 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)
I thought they add things monthly here, but maybe it's by quarters as well? That'd make sense.
IIRC everything has to be ordered/purchased through the state in Iowa.
On an odd note, Costco has Bulleit Bourbon for $20/750ml here, which is almost $10 cheaper than most grocery stores!
― mh, Monday, 11 April 2011 20:02 (fifteen years ago)
oh i meant the bulleit rye... the new one. i forgot to say that (they do already carry reg bulleit).
