Yeah, but there's a difference between when that money is spent indirectly (I'm going to a show and maybe I'll meet some new people but mostly I'm paying for the show) and directly (I'm paying to be able to send an e-mail to you because you seem kinda interesting).

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

And how many times have you shelled out money for a show you were less enthused at the thought of seeing because there was the off-chance that you might meet someone there?

I agree that on some level it's not the most romantic way to meet people, but at least it is another way. One which, on a purely essentialist level, probably wouldn't exist unless there was money involved...

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I've actually done that very, very rarely (although I have shelled out money for a show that I wasn't terribly enthused about because a friend or someone I was dating was interested in it, which is similar but I think different).

I mean, yes, you're right, and the more options the better, sure, and I bet there are some people who flourish in the personals. But it still seems like a vaguely weird and perverse way to meet someone. But, yeah, I still have my profile.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I just took a very nice and fun thread and ruined it, didn't I? Dammit. Ignore me.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

(That's better than a collect call.)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I swear, that kid has a look that makes me think she's gonna grow up to be the next Dan Perry.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"You want this sucker where?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I think people meeting via personals come into the situation with a mutual disadvantage in that any pretense of serendipity (one thing that makes courtship so fun) is totally lost. There's something prosaic about it, I agree. But I don't see Nerve as taking advantage of anyone, especially since it's easy enough to post your email address in your profile if you so desire.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't they delete your profile if you do? Considering the hard times they were giving over duck pix I would think they'd be scanning for e-mail addresses, since that's where their revenue comes from.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

''This isn't meant to suggest utter loneliness, complete friendlessness, life as a Beckett character, etc.''

I've decided to try and live my life like this. oh wait i already do!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 23:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't post I'll post.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 27 February 2003 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

BEST PROFILE EVER!!!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 28 February 2003 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

So is anyone engaged yet?

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 08:54 (twenty-three years ago)

In my ILX dreams they are!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe no one commented on the profile I posted :-(

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe no one commented on the profile I posted :-(

Actually, I for some reason have a very strong memory of posting simply the word "PIMPTACULAR" in response to this admittedly-best-personal-evah, even with the strange circumstances of the post not actually being here.

Well, anyway, I thought it was "pimptacular", and I wish I had the balls to create a similar one.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, I was speechless

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i've given up on nerve

What, you expect someone to put proper usage of commas before their overwhelming need for wang/vaj?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Wangvaj sounds like a proper name, god help me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

wow

that guy's got it made

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Pronglarp Wangvaj, from Thailand of course.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

eeeeeeewwwwwwww

(ps mark i hear you, i deleted my profile)

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Nickalicious, I kiss you.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
REVIVE!

I haven't gone back since I took my profile down (it was just so much work, and my curiosity was pretty much sated), but I'd like to know how others are doing.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I gave up.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

that's funny, I just got emailed this past week by a foxy chick. Don't know when we'll meet up for drinks, but it's on the agenda.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, this was where my big date last week came from. But despite the date going well he is not interested in a relationship. Sigh.

I'm also exchaning e-mails with one of the most pretentious people I've ever exchanged e-mails with. I would quote them here but that seems rude...

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rude shmude, DISH IT!!!! (just kidding...or am I?)

I haven' gotten any replies or contacted anyone or really even logged onto nerve in quite some time now. I wanna make a pimptacular joke profile soon though.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I have been sharing chioce bits with people on AIM...

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

*coughspillcough*

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

You forget how googleable my name is. And how small a town I live in. I am not so into burning bridges.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, don't look at me - I just had something in my throat.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

:: raises eyebrow ::

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

So do I.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

What a downer.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Well keep it up, then.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

*wonh wonh wonh*

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

So yeah, you can see why I'm so incredibly successful at luring people into bed with me.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Enh. Lately I've stopped trying. And unless a drunk girl falls into my lap within the next six weeks, I don't see any reason to start.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I created a profile a couple of months ago, and have had no response. I've found on dating sites generally that the men do most of the approaching still, but I do get some women contacting me first on other ones. I haven't written to anyone on this site, because I would have to pay, and there is enough going on on free sites for me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Now that I've paid, I've got like 24 "credits" left, which makes me think I should go on a wild dating spree!

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

damn straight, Chris! I'm sure as hell into the idea of getting my $25 worth.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I was waiting for someone to supply the punchline, but I guess I'll do it mysef:

damn straight, Chris! I'm sure as hell into the idea of getting my $25 worth.

because it's cheaper than a hooker!

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I'm so cheap... I had my friend Jay, who had credits, email someone for me, like: "oh, uh, my friend uh wanted me to email you for him. his profile is tigermilking. here's his email"... i felt like i was on food stamps or something

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha no, Phil, it's totally OK! I want to give my credits to friends too! But all my friends are in COUPLES now god damn them fucking gjhklathiotpuy3829ghklsghxnjc....

Anyway I'll give you one of my credits if you find an airport postcard for me. ;-)

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 18 April 2003 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Despite my reservations about spending actual money on this thing, I've already gotten a response. (She's not Jennifer Azzi though.) I think it was this keeper that reeled her in:

Why you should get to know me:
Despite the limpness of the rest of this profile, I am very funny. Women like big words, so I hear, and I've learned a lot. Like: wrap your solipsism around this my pulsating synecdoche.

Thank god for ILX, where I steal all my ideas from.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 06:39 (twenty-three years ago)

What the hell? Collect call? Aaargh! Freeloading gold-diggers! I feel like Joe Millionaire!
