Slightly better now that it does airplay. I think I'll take on caek's suggestion because I'm sick of it not playing stuff.

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:43 (fifteen years ago)

so i got a tv/monitor and im plugging in an inherited mac mini from i think 2006 to serve as a entertainment console thing... is boxee the way to go on this?

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:45 (fifteen years ago)

my previous media center attempt for my dad was that exact set up w/a 3rd party remote, it was too buggy and weird for him but tbf hes old and not best at computers also it was the prev vers of boxee - its workable 4 sure but i wasnt crazy abt boxee

ice cr?m, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

what are the other options

btw i was spelling it boxxy at first and just getting that 4chan chick, the internet, lol

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

"plex"?

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:50 (fifteen years ago)

theres one called plex but that was worse than boxee imo - you could just not use any media center type software and just play moves thro vlc or whatevs

ice cr?m, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:50 (fifteen years ago)

ha xp

ice cr?m, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:50 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah Plex. Appaz the current version is shithouse though.

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:51 (fifteen years ago)

eh i guess http://grab.by/7Q57 is prob the way to go and the new vers is prob better

ice cr?m, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i mean its not a huge pain to play vids thru vlc

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

WD TV Live is the best way to go for playing vids, it's a billion times cheaper than a Mac Mini and plays anything you chuck at it. Needs a wireless adapter though, if you want to go wireless.

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:55 (fifteen years ago)

well i already have the mac mini so

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:55 (fifteen years ago)

fuck sorry

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

hey here's an idea, why don't i read before posting

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

now that im thinking it thru im not even sure why i WANTED boxee or plex vs just using dam vlc or something... i feel like apple is giving me a hideous iOS disease where i want everything neatly arranged in libraries and what have u

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

Plex is designed for a TV screen, VLC not so much (unless I'm missing a plug-in)

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

cool thing w/using boxxee type shit is you can control totally via remote/ditch the keyboard

ice cr?m, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah that's my thinking. If you want to use it properly through a telly you really want to be able to use it without a kb & mouse affair.

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

ya i wouldnt use vlc on my tv tbh!!

manic pixie dream police (s1ocki), Friday, 10 December 2010 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

my friend colin has a really nicely-laid out program he uses, with a remote app on his iphone. shall i ask him what it is?

manic pixie dream police (s1ocki), Friday, 10 December 2010 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

YES

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

yr 'friend colin' 'from canada'

ice cr?m, Friday, 10 December 2010 23:07 (fifteen years ago)

wait tell me more about this vlc vs plex "designed for tv screen" stuff

remote-ness isnt a huge issue since i have that logitech mouse/kyb program on my iphone

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

but point taken... the problem is all these programs seem 2 suck

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

so basically navigating vlc with a remote control is too much effort iirc

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

and also impossible

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

all this is making me tempted to get a tv for xmas

kanellos (gbx), Friday, 10 December 2010 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

Ok my fried from Canada does indeed use plex

manic pixie dream police (s1ocki), Saturday, 11 December 2010 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

I have used all of the media centre type things and there's still no solution as good as VLC. It plays everything (and, crucially, handles subtitles and out-of-sync audio without any difficulty). Personally I don't care about DVD box art, summaries, or whatever the media centres do. I'm also really skeptical of using an iPad, iPhone, or iPod as a remote. Why wouldn't you just want an actual remote where you only have to change the little battery every two years and you can drop it on the floor if you want? I use the Apple remote with an app called Remote Buddy which basically puts up a HUD/visor type of thing that you can navigate folders and open your videos with VLC. It works really well and I've been using this setup for over three years.

fields of salmon, Saturday, 11 December 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

what you want is this -

http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/index.php?pluginoption=catalog&mainItemId=24

plays anything on your network, no weird libraries or whatever, it just reads your directories. comes with a remote. HDMI out (and others)

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 11 December 2010 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

though i hear Syabas have come out with the next-gen called PopBox, which is supposedly the same but better - http://www.popbox.com
