how to have a successful thanksgiving, get bent style...

-your relatives live 3,000 miles away and your extended family as a whole (mostly because of age/distance/death) doesn't really "do" thanksgiving anymore
-your significant other doesn't have a family thanksgiving either (similar reasons) and has no plans
-you make a turkey and a couple of well-considered side dishes and a store-bought pie, so you still have *plenty* of food but it's all killer, no filler
-you do most of the prep/cooking beforehand and relax on the day, while the bird cooks
-winner!

our menu this year is

turkey for the meat eaters
quorn t'urky roast for me and my vegetarian sister
sage and mushroom gravy
cornbread, pecan and pear stuffing
mashed potatoes
scalloped corn
creamed spinach
roasted brussel sprouts
and pumpkin bread pudding

ROARRRR I WANNA FOOD

u need oyster stuffing, but otherwise grebt

we ate at 2 p.m.
dessert at 4 p.m.
coma time

Zucchini sausage casserole ready
Mashed potatoes waiting in the wings

something i learned today: my microwave's "sensor reheat" function is iffy. i was afraid of that.

so full...

cousin bought two local turkeys. one 28 pounder and a 30 pounder! 37 people did not go hungry.

we are 7 tonight.

we ate:

15 lb turkey
sage cornbread sausage apricot cognac stuffing
spicy fruit chutney (apple cranberry grapefruit cloves allspice hot pepper)
rutabaga, sweet potato, parsnips
brussels sprouts
gravy
apple pie (baked at home by brother's boyfriend)
bread pudding w caramel sauce (baked at home by brother)
berries
"gilded lilies" (crazy caramel nut graham cracker Deep South dessert thing my mom makes every year)
white wine: 1996 Puligny-Montrachet "les Enseigneurs"
red wine: 2003 Brunello di Montalcino

I'm just doing the dishes, my brother and mother and my brother's boyfriend did all the cooking.

mushroom gravy

roasted sweet potatoes
STUFFING
green beans
roasted root vegetables
apple/squash thing

everything was really good this year. forwent dessert for seconds of turkey and stuffing plus beer and wine obv

i had some mincemeat pie. and pumpkin pie. and pumpkin cheesecake. and stuffing. and green beans. and corn pudding. and turkey. and mashed spuds with garlic. and wine. and coffee. and probably other stuff. i got so stufffffffed. yummy. i gotta share pictures of my cousin's place. so amazing. three grand pianos! and a state-of-the-art basement recording studio. i'm moving in. i took lots of snapshots.

Salmon (my sister doesn't eat meat or poultry) with a sesame stuffing
Brown rice/wild rice/barley pilaf
Spinach
Caesar salad (brought by my mom)
Pumpkin cheesecake (brought by my sister)

sex and the city 2 on ppv. it's a fascinating car wreck.

it was so good. I miss it already.

Oh god so goooooood. Mother in law gave us a whole homemade cheesecake to take home in exchange for my leftover pumpkin pie! And leftover turkey & stuffing & casserole nomnomnom!!!!
I may yet explode.
Watched the new Jim Carey Christmas Carol with my niece, f'in love that story no matter who does it.

Having another meal, four hours after Thanksgiving dinner, of a turkey/stuffing/cranberry sandwich, with corn pudding, mashed potatoes and more stuffing was a mistake. I see that now.

its okay crut the rest was really great! plus that pumpkin bread pudding with caramel sauce was the jam.

now i'm ready to do a juice fast.

i cooked one of those tofurkey roasts for jordan and he seemed to like it - but jesus fucking christ the gravy is the foulest thing i've ever had the misfortune to smell.
