So can I stream something to my phone in another state (assuming I left my computer on and running at home)?

Mordy, Thursday, 25 November 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

Or do they have to be sharing the same wifi connection?

Mordy, Thursday, 25 November 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

is anyone else's NYTimes app totally fucked recently? Ever since the upgrade to OS4, it crashes the first time you load it, and usually the 2nd, 3rd and 4th times too. I have a 3GS running OS4.

what's with this new ugly shadow gradient on the unlock screen

I am not seeing that. Maybe bc my desktop background is dark.

Looks like the Groupon app will be useful, as it allows you to redeem the Groupon paperlessly.

Just got Find iPhone. Havent tried it yet and hope I never actually need it.

I've used find my phone many times when I can't find my phone at home. You can make it beep which makes it pretty easy to track down.

Jenny also used it to track me when I was running the marathon.

niiiice

kanellos (gbx), Sunday, 5 December 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

Also just got the WFMU app I didn't realize existed. What other essential free music apps should I get?

sunday (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 5 December 2010 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

My friend runs Jelli, which has a cool app for crowdsourced music.

schwantz, Sunday, 5 December 2010 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

i can't download anything, it always says "this item is being modified." anyone else get that?

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Sunday, 5 December 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

yep

Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Sunday, 5 December 2010 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

what should i do

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Sunday, 5 December 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

fmu has an app? didn't apple just announce that single-station apps are verboten?

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 5 December 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

FMU IS NOT A "SINGLE-STATION" IT IS A WAY OF LIFE

sunday (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 5 December 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

The FMU app has been around for over a year, maybe it was grandfathered in. also, Stevie D otm

pixel farmer, Sunday, 5 December 2010 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

Yah, the FMU app is terrific. Thought everyone was aware of it (it's on WFMU's home page).

Also recommended: East Village Radio's app.

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Sunday, 5 December 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

That FM3 buddha box is nice but honestly a lesser app compared to the other one on there... tempting at $2.99 but it looks like the holy grail of buddha boxology.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Monday, 6 December 2010 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

what other one??

sunday (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 6 December 2010 01:56 (fifteen years ago)

search "Buddha" and it comes up. tempted to get it tbh

kanellos (gbx), Monday, 6 December 2010 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Monday, 6 December 2010 02:02 (fifteen years ago)

they are different things. Does this other one actually have sounds for meditation. The original one is a boring implementation of the physical box, which is as much for meditation as it is for people who like Merzbow.

dan selzer, Monday, 6 December 2010 02:06 (fifteen years ago)

Well yes, but how would you suggest making it an interesting implementation of the original box?

sunday (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 6 December 2010 02:07 (fifteen years ago)

The original box lets you change the pitch/speed of the loops.

my buddha machine never let me change pitch or anything?

kanellos (gbx), Monday, 6 December 2010 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

the original version doesn't have teh pitchshifter, it's a later version

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Monday, 6 December 2010 02:17 (fifteen years ago)

o maybe you meant "original" abstractly, like the physical vers

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Monday, 6 December 2010 02:17 (fifteen years ago)

ah

this other one is like the fancy red in shasta's video, and is actual chants, btw

i meant the physical box---my sis got me one for xmas years ago.

kanellos (gbx), Monday, 6 December 2010 02:18 (fifteen years ago)

didn't know/remember the first one didn't let you change pitch. Mine does and it's crucial for enjoyment.

dan selzer, Monday, 6 December 2010 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

sooo Word Lens? worth a DL or yet another app that will be filed away and never used again.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

both

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

pretty much. i DL'd, tried it on my book shelfs and posters, deleted it

kanellos (gbx), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

should we start another thread for late adopters like me? something like "apps with LEGGGGS"?

or are apps something that are only supposed to hold your attention for an hour max and i just don't get it.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

Well pretty much Instapaper and ilx are the only ones I've used long-term regularly. Oh, reeder and news apps. But yeah, rest isn't really used enough to justify purchase really. Wd love to say I use iBooks & stanza for books/poetry but doesn't happen as much as my science-fiction self wd like.

Herr Kapitan Pugvosh (GamalielRatsey), Friday, 17 December 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

I predict in 2011 there will be a show on youtube called "app hoarders".

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Friday, 17 December 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

like you're going to open a long-neglected folder years later and find dead tamagotchis everywhere

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Friday, 17 December 2010 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

haha

kanellos (gbx), Friday, 17 December 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

I STILL have no RSS reader :/ anything good and free both or is it p much just Reeder or bust!

what day is it today? (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 17 December 2010 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

for me the app w/ the most legs is Air Sharing so that I can use my touch as a key drive / pdf viewer; I guess in iOS 4 you can use the ibooks app to view pdfs maybe? but o/w this is super-useful to me.

Euler, Friday, 17 December 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

I guess in iOS 4 you can use the ibooks app to view pdfs maybe?

Yes

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 17 December 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

i find viewing pdfs in ibooks kind of cumbersome and un-fun (although an improvement on trying to view them in... whatever i was using before) - has anyone here used both Air Sharing and ibooks & has a preference?

c sharp major, Friday, 17 December 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

"I guess in iOS 4 you can use the ibooks app to view pdfs maybe?"

And save PDFs as well! I like it actually although it does get wearying for a really long book.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 17 December 2010 21:56 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I don't read anything long on it, just articles that I need to read on the train or on a flight, or when I want to bring a guidebook or maps I've marked up, & have them in pdfs & don't want to lug the paper around.

Euler, Friday, 17 December 2010 22:11 (fifteen years ago)

Pleco does pretty much the same thing as Word Lens but without the on-the-go translation, and specifically with Chinese characters. Really useful tech.
