I know it would upset the no-buttons freaks, but DAMN a d-pad and a couple of buttons would be great for gaming.

Took me at least nine months to work out what an iPod was for. The whole concept of a CD walkman without CDs was so foreign that I had no frame of reference. That and the name 'iPod' doesn't exactly explain its function. I thought maybe it was a multipurpose PDA or something.

the main problem I have with no buttons is I have to take the thing out of my pocket to skip a song. I liked not having to do that with an ipod, made the chance of getting mugged less likely.

otm. That's one of the key reasons I still tote an iPod Classic everywhere.

iPod Shuffles are great for in-pocket operation.

You can't unclip it without mashing the keys and skipping/pausing a track, so I don't know how people are using these new ones.

Well, you can lock it if you want by holding in the button but I tend just to put it in my jacket pocket unclipped.

had my first major irritation with apple tv, which was also my first experience renting a film from itunes (I should have learned not to try to do this on thanksgiving day when I desperately needed to keep my 4 year old occupied); downloading movies on my crappy connection takes like, the length of the movie; 1.5 hrs to download a 70 minute movie, for instance. Once it's downloaded, since apple tv has no real storage, you'd better watch it right then or NOT navigate away from it in appletv, or you will ahve to download the whole thing again. Granted this is probably better if you don't have a horrible DSL connection like I do (3mbps, although realistically it's more like 2 according to speedtest).

So, shouldn't I be able to rent films on the computer instead, and stream them to the appletv? It seems like I should, and yet, I can't find any of my films that are imported into itunes from appletv; the few short videos I can find I can't seem to play because "an error occurred". This might be because I haven't updated itunes beyond 10 yet (10.1 came out this week); does this fix that? then at least I could rent something earlier, have it stored on the machine for a few hours, and then when we watch it juts navigate to it and not have to wait another 2 hours for it to rebuffer.

true; I'm just surprised apple hasn't trumped netflix for movie streaming; i would have thought it would have started playing more instantly and downloaded while it played. (that said the hd quality off itunes was better than anything I stream off netflix which looks shitty due to my bandwidth problem)

According to this it doesn't matter, so I'm not going to do the annoying IT support thing of asking you to update to the latest version.

The way I would have done it is to rent a film, use the Apple TV to find it in your iTunes Library > Films and just start watching it (I've not rented a film yet), but if that's not working perhaps you can't do it after all. I agree that that's bloody ridiculous, though.

I reckon 2Mbps is pushing it for live HD streaming at Apple's demanded quality, but I agree that your Mac should have a way of taking care of that so you don't notice it.

can't decide between MBA 11.6 and MBP 13"; if only the 13" had an i3 it'd be a no-brainer. why are they still rocking the 30 year old C2D

i3 is too hot for the 13" shell. The MBA is a good second computer due to one USB, no SD card slot &c.

basically: already got a MB but only use for internet/youtube/email/itunes - want to upgrade to either be able to also maybe play games under boot camp (MBP) or just continue to do what I currently do but lighter/smaller (for new job which will include travel)

snagging points: C2D is old but RAM in MBA is unupgradeable and 11.6 is maybe /too/ small

Tyranny of choice. MBP at least has more than one USB slot so you can use wi-fi/3G as well as a memory thing. MBA is zone of suck imo especially at the current price, but the 13" MBP costs more again so I dunno.

fwiw I bought the current 15" MBP and love it to bits, but I don't know how I'd go with travel.

k this is pretty much a buying bible for Apple products. It recommends against buying an MBP now, probably because a spec bump is imminent.

yup, there is that too. i5 at £1500 is too much imo. i3 at £900 (on amazon) would just be about bearable. can suck up the C2D in the MBA due to the design

head says MBP, heart says MBA. don't really do much heavy lifting on my (2006) MB as it is and I could get by without upgrading at all probably but I'm restless

I know, usually we're the ones being shafted. Base 15" MBP is $2100 inc. 10% sales tax, which is roughly £1300.

new rumor today says that MBP will receive a total redesign in april, with lightpeak technology, SSD, etc.

That kind of dated rumour is that kind I tend to have little faith in.

I mean, when there are pics from a Chinese factory or what have you, fine, the rumour's got legs, but leaks about what Apple will release in 5 months time ... how often does that happen?

spose i could look this up: but could a 11" MBA drive something like LR3 pretty easily (and with an external monitor)? i don't game much, and basically the only thing i need horsepower for is photo editings/management

I think all the perceptions of 'fastness' from the MBA just come from having the SSD in there

LR3 is faster than aperture but I'm not sure how objectively fast it is, the problem is that you'll probably have to store all your photos on an external disk-based HD, which means that when you are editing, you still have to wait for the files to be written from/to the HD etc. which might impact the performance

unless you're gangsta and keep all the files you're editing on the SSD itself
