glenmorangie is one of the best whiskeys i've tasted

sonderangerbot, Monday, 22 November 2010 02:06 (fifteen years ago)

anyone had edradour?

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Monday, 22 November 2010 02:07 (fifteen years ago)

islay is its own thing for me. lagavulin is probably my favorite whiskey. caol ila also great, and bruichladdich maybe has the most exagerrated islay flavor iirc.

agree glenglenmorangie is v good and has one of the best names too!

straight old fashioned, virgin (another al3x), Monday, 22 November 2010 02:24 (fifteen years ago)

first thoughts on glenmorangie = vv good, but kneejerk prefer glenfiddich. lot of whiskey out there yet tho

I am not really a hard liquor guy at all, but I just bought a bottle of this, which is really nice:

Finally tried some Rye whiskey this weekend. Not much different from regular it seemed, a little bit of a different taste and aftertaste. I had hyped it up in my mind as something totally awesome, but it pretty much just tastes like normal bourbon with very slight differences.

Of course I didn't have an especially good rye. Mid-shelf stuff, mind you.

agnostic abt caol ila

calpolaris (nakhchivan), Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:42 (fifteen years ago)

a little bit of a different taste and aftertaste

but uh that's kind of the whole thing isn't it?

usually drier than bourbon, less sweet

dmr, Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:53 (fifteen years ago)

bought a bottle of Eagle Rare bourbon tonight, fairly low proof but has that rye spiciness

I usually lean toward higher proof and put like one ice cube in but this is good neat

dmr, Sunday, 28 November 2010 05:02 (fifteen years ago)

i am NOT loving the maker's 46. it tastes like alcohol. i am not really getting any sense of sophistication from this whiskey. u_u.

tehresa, Sunday, 28 November 2010 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

glenmorangie really good. eyeing the glenlivet atm tho.

Goths in Home & Away in my lifetime (darraghmac), Sunday, 28 November 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

Brought home a couple of bottles of Suntory Yamazaki from japan. Opened the 12 y/o last night - delicious. Better than the glenfiddich I'm used to

more info: first taste was bourbony w/ a little extra sweetness on the end which was v v nice and kinda interesting but then it opened up and it became grape juice w/ rubbing alcohol in it and was v v gross.

JIMMY MOD THE SACK MASTER (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 2 December 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

oh what it was aged in zinfindel barrels?

So, a friend got me a bottle of Knob Creek over the Thanksgiving holiday, and I had a glass last night in my typical bourbon fashion - one big ice cube in the glass.

I will be trying it neat tonight. Shit was SMOOOTHER than I remembered. Dayum.

i like abelour scotch, but why i couldn't really tell you, i don't know much about scotch. and i have to say the reason i posted the hitchens video is that i think johnnie walker black is really good.

jeevves, Friday, 3 December 2010 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

Hitchens is notorious for regifting really nice bottles of scotch to his friends & neighbors. Many people know what he's fond of scotch and get him very expensive bottles as presents but he ONLY drinks Johnnie Walker Black and gives away everything else.

I DIED, Friday, 3 December 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

that's awesome. i've told this story before, but he's replied to two of my fan emails before within a few hours with a very polite, informative response each time... he is a true gentleman

I got bottle of Compass Box Flaming Heart 10-Year Anniversary as a present for a friend today at my favorite local liquor store. Really gorgeous label:

Also, bless that store for carrying 14 kinds of rye.

haha I don't think I'd have gotten it for him if I wasn't sure that I'd be able to share some.

X-posts/re: hitchens

Except that, even allowing that its a really good one like Johnny Walker Black, repping that hard for a blended whisky, to the exclusion of all other whiskeys is so weird to me. I look down on it, as surely as I look down on someone who only drank canadian whiskey.

I mean if you don't drink single malts or quality bourbons, you just aren't in the fraternity of whiskey snobs/afficionados, and are hence to be ignored on the subject.

what is drink whisky day

a very special day that coincides with the repeal of Prohibition in the USA

(note: if the actual date falls on a week day then the holiday is moved to the nearest following Friday, creating Drink Whiskey Day (observed))
