haven't used ccc for years, i use superduper. it's not free but scheduling works. set it to clone to one drive in even weeks (e.g.) and one in odd weeks. it will throw up an error if the drive isn't connected, which will remind you to swap the offsite.

i see what you mean about having an old version to go back to, but your time machine does that imo. the clone is your "get me back where i was just before the internal hard drive died" backup, and your time machine is "give me an old version of a file".

caek, Sunday, 21 November 2010 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

you may want to hold off on cloning for a few days/weeks/whatever when you install a big system update though

caek, Sunday, 21 November 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

there is one other v v impt use for the checkboxes: when you want a song to play, and JUST that song, i.e. don't continue to the next song automatically. in radio stations, for instance, this is extremely handy.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 21 November 2010 14:27 (fifteen years ago)

i have an "in rotation" playlist that syncs to my ipod. (i use hazel to automatically add new tracks to that playlist). i don't like "smart" playlists because i don't feel in control. every now and again i prune the "in rotation" playlist. for me it feels more logical to have a playlist of stuff that i want to hear, rather than a playlist full of stuff i don't want to hear.

does not compute

caek, Sunday, 21 November 2010 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

i don't even use playlists either. just select 'music' and browse by artist/album and manually arrange things. I don't understand how anyone would do this differently. my way is best and is the only true way.

akm, Sunday, 21 November 2010 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

otm synching is 4 noobs

ice cr?m, Sunday, 21 November 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

But caek, I don't need to change anything.

Consistent use of ratings + smart playlists is the way to go. Always surprised to see so many people neglecting the rating system

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 21 November 2010 22:15 (fifteen years ago)

the ratings system requires an enormous amount of attentive anality to make any sense

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Sunday, 21 November 2010 22:17 (fifteen years ago)

Nah. If I like a song I give it four stars, if I REALLY like it I give it five stars. Then I have 'good' (4-5) and 'best' (5) smart playlists to make sense of it all, the end.

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 21 November 2010 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

oof, yeah, it's great for micromanaging a certain kind of playlist, i guess, but fuck if i have the time to contemplate the starriness of all 60GBs of my music

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Sunday, 21 November 2010 22:25 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, see I rated all my music back in the 45Gb days.

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 21 November 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

if i were really going to take the plunge into obsessive that rating all my songs would require id need way more than five stars

max, Sunday, 21 November 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

what i REALLY wish itunes had was a tagging system a la netflix

max, Sunday, 21 November 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

"coked-out studio masterpieces from the 1970s"

max, Sunday, 21 November 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

code it yrself

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Sunday, 21 November 2010 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

kill yourself

well, all it does is put downloaded files on an external HD then adds it to the "in rotation" playlist. it's just file management, there's no auto-judgement involved. jesus we should take this to the "digital media management" thread already

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 21 November 2010 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

max!

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Sunday, 21 November 2010 23:07 (fifteen years ago)

what i REALLY wish itunes had was a tagging system a la netflix

if the search box in itunes actually searched through ID3 tags you could put whatever you wanted to in the comments field and then type in, like, "coked" and it would show up *bangs head against wall*

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 21 November 2010 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

what is hazel exactly? i'm tired of having two itunes libraries, one big one on a HD and one smaller portable one on my laptop. can it help me

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Sunday, 21 November 2010 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

Maintaining two iTunes libraries sounds far more difficult than ticking checkboxes, just saying

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 21 November 2010 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

it is annoying and i hate it but i didnt have the HD space on my laptop so what can i do

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Sunday, 21 November 2010 23:33 (fifteen years ago)

fair point

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 21 November 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

I had to do that for a number of years fwiw

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 21 November 2010 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

if anyone has a solution i would greedily, gratefully, grasp at it

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Sunday, 21 November 2010 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

buy a bigger laptop HD

_| ̄|○| ̄|○| ̄|○ (dayo), Sunday, 21 November 2010 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

ice cr?m, Monday, 22 November 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

well i actually have a new laptop with a bigger HD in it but im kind of scared of using 100gbs of it just for music ~

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Monday, 22 November 2010 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

Why?

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 22 November 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

btw if you don't care about your DVD drive just slap this in there

http://www.mcetech.com/optibay/

get 2 1TB hard drives you're carrying around 2TB all the time what could be easier it sells itself

_| ̄|○| ̄|○| ̄|○ (dayo), Monday, 22 November 2010 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

it's very silly but because i was running on like, 7-8gbs left over for at least a year, i'm terrified of not having big huge swaths of extra space at my disposal. i just know i'm gonna fill the whole thing up before i know it...

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Monday, 22 November 2010 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

but i should prob just do it.

i need my dvd drive for burning cds & dvds

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Monday, 22 November 2010 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

u r so 2 thousand and l8

_| ̄|○| ̄|○| ̄|○ (dayo), Monday, 22 November 2010 04:19 (fifteen years ago)

you can still keep your optical drive in an external case. normally what I do is rip all my DVDs to the hard drive, then watch them using DVD Player or VLC. works fine

_| ̄|○| ̄|○| ̄|○ (dayo), Monday, 22 November 2010 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

or better yet, encode them to m4v's using handbrake, then stream them to my iPad using air video. it's a treat

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Monday, 22 November 2010 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

_| ̄|○| ̄|○| ̄|○ (dayo), Monday, 22 November 2010 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

how the heck do I get iOS 4 onto my iPad? it says the OS is up to date at version 3.2.2.

Unfrozen Caveman Board-Lawyer (WmC), Monday, 22 November 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

there is now iOS 4 for iPad as of yet...unless 4.2 is supposed to be for iPad also?

_| ̄|○| ̄|○| ̄|○ (dayo), Monday, 22 November 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)
