clone with ccc or superduper once a week. assuming ccc has a smart update thing that only copies what has changed it shouldn't take more than 20 minutes. put it on a schedule.

thats actually what i've been doing, using both, each on a different partition (which is then duplicated offsite) - i'm just wondering what the extra benefit of having ccc run on a schedule is (given that that is already happening on the time machine partition) - only reason i ask is i had a bit of a problem when ccc ran on a schedule (cant actually remember exactly what it was but it hung and wouldn't let me log out) - doing the ccc manually is obviously less likely to be frequent but at same time doing it that way is a good reminder to swap the onsite and offsite externals!

See this worries me, particularly as the Apple TV problem is likely to get under my feet twice a year. I still don't think I should do anything at all.

look, you don't have to touch the checks until you're sure my suggestion works for you. you can go back to the way you were doing it in ten seconds.

what i'm saying is, _when_ you realise my solution works, you _may_ want to recheck unchecked songs and, _if_ you want, just before you do that, you _could_ backup your itunes metadata files, just in case. of course as a linux user who knows what they're doing you're backing up to clones and incremental backups anyway, so this advice is irrelevant.

this is what i mean though (i think) - if the time machine partition is taking care of home directories and original files the whole time, its not so important for the clone to be taking care of that side (if i can boot up from say a 3 week old clone - could get anything newer than 3 weeks old from the time machine partition) - like the way i understand it, the clone for the system (+data) and the time machine for the data?

(i have no idea what word i meant to type when i typed 'original'!)

what you say is true but ideally the clone should be a full clone and as close to up to date as is practical.

i'm not sure what the issue is. is it that ccc's schedule thing doesn't work, or that you want to back up less often?

however often you backup it should be on a schedule, not a manual process. you will forget it or postpone it if it's manual.

its mainly the scheduling part of CCC gave me issues, hung my computer and refused to let me log out (or even kill the process from the cli)

you are right about forgetting if its manual (tho hopefully time machine should back up everything too)

As i swap the onsite and offsite disks i'm not really sure how i'm going to get round the manual aspect of it!

although part of me is perhaps thinking about backing up less often with ccc (and more often with time machine) so i know the clone is stable (and if i do something i dont clone the problem!), knowing that time machine has my data covered

haven't used ccc for years, i use superduper. it's not free but scheduling works. set it to clone to one drive in even weeks (e.g.) and one in odd weeks. it will throw up an error if the drive isn't connected, which will remind you to swap the offsite.

i see what you mean about having an old version to go back to, but your time machine does that imo. the clone is your "get me back where i was just before the internal hard drive died" backup, and your time machine is "give me an old version of a file".

you may want to hold off on cloning for a few days/weeks/whatever when you install a big system update though

there is one other v v impt use for the checkboxes: when you want a song to play, and JUST that song, i.e. don't continue to the next song automatically. in radio stations, for instance, this is extremely handy.

i have an "in rotation" playlist that syncs to my ipod. (i use hazel to automatically add new tracks to that playlist). i don't like "smart" playlists because i don't feel in control. every now and again i prune the "in rotation" playlist. for me it feels more logical to have a playlist of stuff that i want to hear, rather than a playlist full of stuff i don't want to hear.

i don't even use playlists either. just select 'music' and browse by artist/album and manually arrange things. I don't understand how anyone would do this differently. my way is best and is the only true way.

Consistent use of ratings + smart playlists is the way to go. Always surprised to see so many people neglecting the rating system

Nah. If I like a song I give it four stars, if I REALLY like it I give it five stars. Then I have 'good' (4-5) and 'best' (5) smart playlists to make sense of it all, the end.

oof, yeah, it's great for micromanaging a certain kind of playlist, i guess, but fuck if i have the time to contemplate the starriness of all 60GBs of my music

well, all it does is put downloaded files on an external HD then adds it to the "in rotation" playlist. it's just file management, there's no auto-judgement involved. jesus we should take this to the "digital media management" thread already

what is hazel exactly? i'm tired of having two itunes libraries, one big one on a HD and one smaller portable one on my laptop. can it help me

Maintaining two iTunes libraries sounds far more difficult than ticking checkboxes, just saying

it is annoying and i hate it but i didnt have the HD space on my laptop so what can i do

it's very silly but because i was running on like, 7-8gbs left over for at least a year, i'm terrified of not having big huge swaths of extra space at my disposal. i just know i'm gonna fill the whole thing up before i know it...

but i should prob just do it.

you can still keep your optical drive in an external case. normally what I do is rip all my DVDs to the hard drive, then watch them using DVD Player or VLC. works fine

or better yet, encode them to m4v's using handbrake, then stream them to my iPad using air video. it's a treat
