Update: Saw my orthopedist last week and got my third cortisone shot. This will be my 6th month dealing with this injury. If I can ever get healthy I am going to be awesome. Got a half coming up in January, full and a 10 miler in May. I want to destroy them all.

garmin connect "enhances" its site by using bing shitmaps instead of google, takes away all the fun of google earth integrated maps. nice job, garmin.

two weeks pass...

went out this morning to test myself -- radio said it was 14 degrees, windchill -3
i lived, and it wasn't all *that* bad so i have high hopes for enduring my second winter

i miss 40 degrees, but this will do i guess?

Running in the snow is surprisingly fine. Ice is less so

yeah otm. well, running in the snow can be quite intense, like running in heavy rain, but doable, and you'll feel smug afterwards.

getting cold or wet isn't really an issue, if anything it makes me run faster, but i always get a horrible snotty nose when running in the cold that makes breathing kind of an issue :(

ran a 4:18 marathon-distance training run this saturday (2 days ago) for kicks

feel fantastic

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Monday, 6 December 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

I'm contemplating taking the rest of the year off. But that would leave me no base come January which would be when I have to start training for Wisconsin.

Of course I won't have a base anyway if I continue to experience ITBS issues. Month 7 of it!!! Might as well go for a full year of annoyance.

Jeff, Monday, 6 December 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

Good thing is I've been focusing on diet in the last couple months and am down about 13 pounds. That feels good because I steadily gained weight the whole time I was training for the marathon.

Jeff, Monday, 6 December 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

man it's so fucking cold lately, v hard to go for a run in this. also had a chest infection about a month ago and i've been full of fucking mucous since, my weird chronic health probs mean i'm finding my breathing gets really laboured after 3 miles or so, even tho physically i feel well able to keep going to what had become my usual 5/6 miles. guess i just have to take it easy till i feel better.

do you guys wear hats/gloves etc? what about scarves?

on the plus side everyone i know is saying i've lost weight and look healthy and stuff, so that's cool.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

i've just got back from a run. so. fucking. cold.

i wear shorts/long-sleeved winter running top/gloves in weather like this.

feeling you on the mucus - it's so so hard to run well when you have crap streaming out of your nose. i don't have an infection or anything, though i've always had shitty sinuses - it's just the temperature causing it. 10 minutes back inside and my nose is 100% back to normal.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

Just a hat that covers the ears and gloves. I can't imagine running with a scarf, would just get too hot.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i do the hat/glove combo down to about 20 degrees, and stay in shorts, no scarf, etc. works for me, and it never gets colder than 20-25 degrees in TX

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

dunno, my neck/chin/chest get very cold, some kind of running scarf/snood looks tempting.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

you can get tops that zip quite high up the neck

Vasco da Gama, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

mine does that sort of, my thermal thing and also light rain jacket. but still get the coldness. it's funny as my head/ears aren't really too cold.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

got 800m into my run today (tights, gloves, hat, merino base layer) and had to turn back it was so cold (my phone said -11ºC). a buff would be good for neck/face covering but I can't run with my mouth covered else my glasses would steam up

don't mind running in the snow (ice is a pita but I have a canal nearby that has a relatively unused - so uncompacted - path) or cold but this was above and beyond

smoke on this^ one (cozen), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

basically, I got a headache within the first three minutes

smoke on this^ one (cozen), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

I just can't do it! Cold weather just not in my blood. I've taken to strictly treadmill

http://www.ilxor.com/glyloop.mp3 (Aerosol), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

I have a light blue jacket with a hood that I wear when it's really cold. I must look like a smurf when I wear it but I don't really care. Usually I'm out there as the sun comes up.

ok computer is a really nice album to run to. i am getting really sick of my neighborhood though because i run for 20-30 minutes and see the same streets over and over. but driving somewhere to run seems really weird, like i'm on some secret agent shit or something.

jeevves, Thursday, 9 December 2010 10:54 (fifteen years ago)

22 degrees when I went out yesterday, this is how I dressed:

Jeff, Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

Under Armour cold gear top and bottom, shorts, bright as hell brooks jacket.

Jeff, Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

Also wear a smartwool hat and gloves. My feet get a little cold because of the open mesh of the shoes, but i don't have the funds for cold weather shoes right now.

Jeff, Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:27 (fifteen years ago)

i am getting really sick of my neighborhood though because i run for 20-30 minutes and see the same streets over and over.

haha, i ran in a 0.9 mile loop for ~19 combined miles the last couple mornings... go figure

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 9 December 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

That's crazy. Is it possible to just run somewhere else? Chicago is an extremely runner friendly and you can really go all over the place without having to drive anywhere.

Jeff, Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

However when I lived in Greensboro, NC, that was not the case, since there was a lack of sidewalks in many areas.

Jeff, Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

I once contemplated running a 17 miler by just continuously circling my block. That way when I pull up lame I won't be 8.5 miles from home. Never did it though.

Jeff, Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

i fell down last week while i was running! caught my heel in the loop of my shoelace, stumbled for a step or two and then bam! flat on the ground. got some road rash and a big dark bruise, but mostly it was just embarrassing—it was 5 p.m., and i was right in the main pedestrian route between downtown and the university, so lots of people around.

mte, Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

i can now say that listening to 'running up that hill' by kate bush while running up a hill is fun

jeevves, Friday, 10 December 2010 06:54 (fifteen years ago)

getting back into the swing, did 5.31 miles yday in about 50 minutes.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 11 December 2010 13:11 (fifteen years ago)

the only time for me to run during week is after dark, and im not feeling it. its sorta depressing to me. i have decent headlamps that make it plenty doable. i think part of it is that i ride home from work on my bike in the dark for about an hour. after that, im just ready to be someplace with ambient light- dont feel like going back out into the night.

pretty sure v. northern latitude winters would get to me.

rhymes with a$$ange (Hunt3r), Saturday, 11 December 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

scheduling has led me to experience my first night running, which i'm finding i actually like more than i thought i would. fewer people on trail, more zoning out time. definitely not used to running in these temps, though (yeah i know 30 is not that cold but i was used to high 40s last winter!). i usually adjust by the end of the run but the first few min kinda suck! have started the bf on the runner's world 8-week program and am having fun as 'coach'. lol.

tehresa, Saturday, 11 December 2010 15:21 (fifteen years ago)

I love night running! Once the temp here dips into the 50s after dusk, the Town Lake trail is totally deserted. Sometimes when I get into a certain rhythm and it's one of the darker parts of the trail, I feel like I'm running through outer space.

Just got back from my first (informal, just me on the trail) half-marathon... 13.5 miles in 2:45. Not very fast, but it felt great.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 12 December 2010 02:54 (fifteen years ago)

not a big fan of late-night running anymore (i get sleepy) but early morning runs before sunrise are glooooorious

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Sunday, 12 December 2010 05:40 (fifteen years ago)

Well, night running at this time of year being defined as running from like 6pm to 8pm.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 12 December 2010 05:54 (fifteen years ago)

I enjoy running any time but living in a city has destroyed my appetite for running so far, too much to react to, no headspace

ogmor, Sunday, 12 December 2010 13:29 (fifteen years ago)

that's why running at dawn/twilight/dark is the best -- it's not so overstimulating. i have the same problem.

ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Sunday, 12 December 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

I like lots of stimulation. It's like parkour.

Jeff, Sunday, 12 December 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

i guess i was basically saying that i didn't like running on unlit deserted canal paths because they are not sufficiently stimulating.

rhymes with a$$ange (Hunt3r), Sunday, 12 December 2010 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

I like the night time / outer space running feeling. Its only drawback is something surprising you - another runner behind you, a dog, something. I always feel faintly fearful even with a good headlamp, reflective stuff...

This weekend was warm in Brooklyn, so I took advantage and ran 22 miles over 2 days. 10 on Saturday, 12 today. Felt good. But I'm also in one of those modes where my belly is slightly chubbier the *more* I run, not less This stuff comes and goes, just strange to observe...

paulhw, Sunday, 12 December 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

I always feel faintly fearful even with a good headlamp, reflective stuff...

agree, it's great fun though!

ran my old 6 mile pros pk route after being away and man i am so much stronger than i was a year ago *pats self on back*

ice cr?m, Saturday, 18 December 2010 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

have run 20+ miles 5 of the last 6 weekends

fucking exhausted btw

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Sunday, 19 December 2010 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

I hate the headlamp people, because when they're coming from the opposite direction, the lamps blind you. So sometimes I body check them into the lake.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 19 December 2010 06:36 (fifteen years ago)

ilxor u r a god, f hazel tough but fair

ice cr?m, Sunday, 19 December 2010 07:56 (fifteen years ago)

last weekend i was on the trail at 5am with a headlamp, going down a hill, and this guy was coming up the hill the other direction, and yknow a headlamp kinda points down, right? so it was right in his eyes, and that fucker stopped me on the trail and complained the light was in his eyes! i was thinking, motherfucker it's not my fault you were coming up a hill at the same time i was going down, what do you want me to do, turn off my headlamp and run in pitch darkness?? ;_;

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Sunday, 19 December 2010 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

you both shouldve been asleep, barring that body check him into a lake maybe

ice cr?m, Sunday, 19 December 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

what a jerk! was he wearing a headlamp too? i usually look over to the side a bit if i see someone coming, but damn, y'all shoulda been bonding at the fact that you were both crazy enough to be out at 5am instead of him being a tool.

tehresa, Sunday, 19 December 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

I run with my eyes closed.

Jeff, Sunday, 19 December 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

i wear my sunglasses (when i run) at night.

tehresa, Sunday, 19 December 2010 18:35 (fifteen years ago)

what do you want me to do, turn off my headlamp and run in pitch darkness??

hahaha, my strategy, since I run on Town Lake Trail so often, is to just close my eyes and keep running until I'm past the oncoming lamps.
