You don't cuddle with JJ Abrams, you strap in and feel the Gs.

Vicky Vale: "What do you want?!"
The Joker: "A little song, a little dance... Abrams head on a lance..."

jj abrams starts everything well (except for the de rigueur dinner party scenes that set up the characters that seem to appear in all his shows and films) and then everything just gets stupid pretty quick.

I'm just waiting for the Cloverfield monster to appear in this.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

They could throw in some songs, then it would be like Mamma Mia in space. With awesome explosions.

snoball, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

I kind of hope this Star Trek movie ends up being an elaborate tie-in explaining the Lost smokemonster as just another Star Trek sentient cloud being.

The other thing that's bothering me...

4. In a lengthy action sequence, Kirk, Sulu (John Cho) and a third, red-shirted Starfleet recruit (don’t get too attached to him) parachute from the upper atmosphere of the planet Vulcan onto a giant drill that is burrowing a hole to the center of the planet.

...reminds me of the first level of the video game "MDK", where your character parachutes onto a mining machine that's heading towards a city. Which brings me to this: assuming there's going to be a video game tie in, do you think they write the movie first or the game? Because a lot of it sounds like a scriptwriter said "hey, that would be cool in a video game!"

I guess by the 22nd century they've developed the hell out of the Presidio.

Trailer 3 from http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/startrek/ looks great. Watchmen audience went nuts for it.

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Monday, 9 March 2009 07:50 (seventeen years ago)

lol Kirk "man"

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 March 2009 11:05 (seventeen years ago)

EXPLOSIONS, very Roddenberry oldskool

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 March 2009 11:05 (seventeen years ago)

"FIRE EVERYTHING!" including the set designer who made the bridge look like a bathroom suite...

I mean, when Sulu pushed that throttle control forwards, I half expected to hear a toilet flush...

Sulu & Kumar Hit Warp Speed

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 March 2009 13:46 (seventeen years ago)

I liked the bridge, It seemed very appropriate for future 60s and for the first time the computer screens appear to actually be doing something.

Prince of Persia (Ed), Monday, 9 March 2009 13:52 (seventeen years ago)

Wish we had that trailer instead of the new Terminator at our screening.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 March 2009 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

Somebody overdubbing Bale's rant over the T:S trailer in 5... 4... 3...
Honestly it looks like a grim movie, at least ST looks like it'll be funny.

snoball, Monday, 9 March 2009 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

I about a billion times more down for the new Terminator than I am down for the new Star Trek.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 9 March 2009 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

I suspect that it's going to be "I Am Legend" with cyborgs instead of zombies.

snoball, Monday, 9 March 2009 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

Exactly!

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 9 March 2009 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

"I Am Legend" with cyborgs > Star Trek 90210

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 9 March 2009 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

im stoked for both

s1ocki, Monday, 9 March 2009 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

I really want to be stoked for the Star Trek movie but it just isn't working for me. I don't really want to watch sullen young Kirk be cajoled into suave Federation-stanning via circumstances beyond his control.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 9 March 2009 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

new trailer was pretty dope

straight up, you're payin' jacks just to hear me phase (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 9 March 2009 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

the guy who plays young kirk is my main worry about that one - could be a dud

s1ocki, Monday, 9 March 2009 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

Well the emo aspect of JTK acting like Kevin the Teenager doesn't really appeal, but I hope they're going to get through that bit quickly. I choose ST's (unintentional) lolfest over watching Bale grit his teeth for two hours.

snoball, Monday, 9 March 2009 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not sure that young woman can fill Uhura's miniskirt

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 March 2009 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

i'd fill uhura's miniskirt ... uh... that sounds kinda gross but somebody had to say it

s1ocki, Monday, 9 March 2009 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

the guy who plays young kirk is my main worry about that one - could be a dud

from the trailer's that's my problem too, he just doesn't look like he has the gravity to be Kirk (no "Shatner the size of a planet" joke intended). Sisto as Spock I can almost buy as someone taking over that character for a few films, but this Kirk looks too pretty and lightweight to become iconic.

Frankly it's just too bad they couldn't or wouldn't put together a good new script for Patrick Stewart.

akm, Monday, 9 March 2009 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

I guess if I'm watching a grand science fiction epic set in a world filled with technological wonders beyond anything currently available to us, I would rather watch the one with dude pissed off because said technology is trying to kill us rather than the one with dude pissed off because his dad died on a diplomatic mission.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Monday, 9 March 2009 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

they should put that on the terminator poster

s1ocki, Monday, 9 March 2009 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

My main concern about this is I'm wondering if they are negating all the previous episodes/movies with yet another time travel mind-f*ck.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 9 March 2009 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

pretty sure that's the plan

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Monday, 9 March 2009 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

I actually wouldn't mind if they did that, there's something to be said for a full-on reboot.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 March 2009 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

imo i don't really care how this relates to the other canon stuff

s1ocki, Monday, 9 March 2009 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

or what ned said

s1ocki, Monday, 9 March 2009 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

Surferdude Kirk, I negate thee.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 March 2009 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

i think this and terminator salvation are both gonna be pretty rad

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Monday, 9 March 2009 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

yeah me neither. continuity is stupid.
