why the heck did that video uploader flip the image horizontally?

So the automatic copyright infringement bots that scan YouTube won't recognize it.

Great episode. Barney's list of reality show exit catchphrases had me rolling.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 03:30 (fifteen years ago)

Enjoyable enough episode. Could have done without the Lost references.

It did strike me that the premise was the kind of thing that this show does better than pretty much any other sitcom, which is the neurosis of a late-20s/early-30s mind. I'm struggling to think of previous examples, but an episode based around the feeling that if you leave the party early, you'll miss out on the awesome stuff, even if you don't feel like being there anymore. I wish it had wrapped into the Zoe narrative in some way, or in the larger theme of the end better. I feel like 3 or 4 years ago the writers would have knocked it out of the park, where here they're just serving the premise adequately enough. Maybe I've got rose-coloured glasses though.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

Ha, the Lost references were my favourite part.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

Is the "gentlemen" thing a reference to something else?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

The Aristrocrats?

For some reason it reminded me of the fops from SNL.

Really quality tonight.

back to the punchy well, huh

Feeling this too in general. Even if the episodes aren't 100% knocking it out of the park, i'm really glad they seem to be trying so hard this year with the unconventional episode structures and writing. Pretty good stuff tonight, though - and i do like it when they manage to make Ted's douchiness work

I am still o_O at tonight's episode.

Was watching Twitter while it was on, and everyone was like, "What's with the wacky countdown numbers going on in this episode?" then BLAM.

yeah segal and hannigan both really played that last scene well, very convincing and not at all overacted, brought the right amount of gravity to the scene that kind of took you out of the sitcomminess for a second without feeling too tacked on or incongruous.

i somehow totally missed the countdown numbers, had to look up what phil was even referring to on a recap site.

washa flocka brain (some dude), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

agreed. also missed the countdown numbers? but i also missed the opening few minutes

Nhex, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 04:54 (fifteen years ago)

thought the wacky numbers thing was a bad clash w/ the last scene. weirdly tasteless. also, barney was overly creepy throughout.

Simon H., Tuesday, 4 January 2011 05:18 (fifteen years ago)

also, I saw the ending coming btwn the title and the phone calls, but Hannigan + Segal really sold it, so brutal.

Simon H., Tuesday, 4 January 2011 05:20 (fifteen years ago)

Holy shit. I missed the countdown but that was really great.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 06:22 (fifteen years ago)

Ha, rewatching, the countdown is so obvious.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 06:24 (fifteen years ago)

But yeah, I really liked how they pulled together a number of running threads within an especially heavy major episode: the doppelganger, all of Robin's on-air history, including minor things like Barney's 'dirty girl' dare or the Japanese news show.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 06:27 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't notice the countdown at all, and without knowing the title of the episode that was a helluva surprise. That episode really brought out what I love about the show, there aren't many sitcoms (or sitcom actors) who could pull that off without making it seem like a Very Special Moment.

boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 06:40 (fifteen years ago)

xposts

I didn't think Barney was overly creepy. He's been a lot worse.

Jouster, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 08:18 (fifteen years ago)

I spent ages wondering about the big 6 on the doctors pad, so it all kind of fell into place.

tbh i thought with the dad theme and bearded barney the reveal would be his dad, which threw me off and made it a bigger dramatic smack in the face.

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

wow at the countdown. i thought it was just a thing at the end to turn it from a funny ep about making babies and first days to sad end. never noticed it went the whole way through.

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

whoa. i did notice that crazy ass 6 and the that pamphlet marshall was reading, but almost none of the others

Nhex, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

Me neither, the 6 was the only one I noticed so I didn't realize it was a countdown.

the super obvious 10 on the denim jacket got me.

i noticed the 36 on the beer cause the camera got in real tight on it.

mizzell, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

SPOILER*** why would they have a secret countdown to Marshall's father dying? (obv they did, but what were they thinking the effect would be?)

Mordy, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

Not to brag, but I noticed the countdown right away (well, almost ... starting with 49). Fantastic episode, one of the best they've ever done.

feels in keeping, it;s the kind of greenaway-ish ish they do sometimes

i noticed it happening, not every number but most, so you a had a 'where is this going thing', maybe to marshall being infertile (but we know he probably isn't coz lily was preggo in a flashforward, could be someone else's but still), maybe something else

really good ep, and mostly a top-form season so far
