“This is not an email killer. This is a messaging experience that includes email as one part of it,” Zuckerberg said. It’s all about making communication simpler. “This is the way that the future should work,” he continued.

You know how many times I've accidentally gone to General Motors' website while trying to get to gmail? The FBI is looking forward to your clicks.

three cheers for getting rid of subjects lines in e-mails, though

Cunga, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

how will we know what they're about?

Smiley panda mixed moniker (7,4) (onimo), Monday, 15 November 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

why should we be subjected to this knowledge

ice cr?m, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

it'll read more like a new message in a IM convo, or like an ILX thread. The Never Ending Facebook Conversation Story

Fun fact: 90% of the subjects in my e-mails have been titled "Hey" "What's Up?" "Sick" "Sorry, can 't make it," So..." or "Untitled."

Cunga, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

seems if you do away w/the subject line and perfunctory greeting showing a fragment of the message is likely most informative of all

ice cr?m, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

like most email clients already give you a bit of the message and its pretty invaluable right

ice cr?m, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

xpost it's like they invented some way of previewing the message

^^ involves shift key, what a disaster

sarahel, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)

like most email clients already give you a bit of the message and its pretty invaluable right

"Tired of not having enough energy to get your sex on? For only $59.99 we'll sell four bottles--" tells me more about the e-mails contents than any subject could.

ice cr?m, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

Wait, there's more!

Will applications be able to message me through the new Facebook Messages?

When you use an application, that application must request permission to message you through Facebook.

The new Facebook Messages also gives you a variety ways to control which messages actually reach you.

It goes against Facebook policy for developers to access Facebook information without permission, including usernames or user IDs. That said, we know that we can’t prevent this in every case. Some things to keep in mind:

* Facebook aggressively prosecutes spammers.
* Facebook employs sophisticated spam-prevention systems.
* New Messages gives you ways to control which messages reach you.
* Setting up a Facebook email address is optional.

so the short answer is "of course they can."
