and a major problem with facebook e-mail will be that most of the people we give our e-mail addresses to are not people we want to necessarily know on Facebook.

I hadn't even thought about that but so so OTM. Here, potential employer, have my resume and a link to my FB page so you can find out the color of my soul, my favorite TV shows, and which of Henry VIII's wives I am most like.

Given that Facebook has already replaced email for many younger Internet users--and become the "start-page" and communications hub for many of the rest--it makes great sense for Facebook to offer a full-fledged email product to become the very thing it made irrevevant.

So at least six months ago, and probably more, I unfriended a guy who was a friend back in my wild days because he grew up into a hardcore pro-war type and I got tired of having to read about putting boots in the asses of various Muslim countries every time I logged on to FB. and he just tried to re-add me, which I would have ignored, but also sent me a message asking why I unfriended him and I don't know what to say. "Our shared past is an insufficient bond to overcome how repellent I find your ideologies?" That just seems kind of harsh.

Also I think part of my issue here is that I get kind of bummed when people that I knew who used to have some amount of imagination and curiosity about life grow up to embrace hardcore redneckery in tiny, boring towns in Delaware and take up hunting and boat ownership and conservative politics, and that makes me feel like a snobby jerk.

current people i am considering hiding: people who constantly post "SAVE THIS DOG" links. if i wanted a dog, i would already have one. you should assume that most of your facebook friends probably have all the dogs they want. and if they don't, they probably know where the humane society is.

separate subject: how many unresponded-to friend requests do you let pile up before you just tear through them on a mad binge of rejection? i've got 78 in the queue and it's making me twitchy. i don't know why i don't just immediately ignore them. i guess it's because i'm in a relatively small city, and a lot of these are "mutual friends" of lots of my other friends, and there's kind of this sense of, oh maybe i'll find out who that person is and they'll be cool and i'll want to be their friend, but that would be awkward if i've already rejected them... but that's pretty stupid, i guess.

The people who'd be offended by a refusal are best kept in limbo. It's totally passive-aggressive but then, in many cases, so is the request itself. As to the mutual friends adding you before you've actually interacted with them, you don't really owe them anything. You could mention to the friend in common that X added you but you don't add people you've never met and hope it filters back.

My tween cousins are in my feed and occasionally go on sprees of liking and quizzing that MUST be hidden.

This FB email thing is nuts. FB already emails me everything it burps up.

I got my FB email setting stripped down to event invitations, which is all I really need to know.

as long as the new facebook mail lets me forward all that stuff to gmail ill probably be okay with it

i accept everyone i sort of know, but i clean house at least once a month and delete people who have not given me a clearer idea of how i know them or why i should keep them around...

these days the only people i don't know who i'll accept are people who have interesting stuff posted on their walls. if it's all about vol football, forget it. (even worse, like one i bounced today, if it says "i only use facebook for professional reasons, as a representative of [name deleted] PR agency.")
