VLC out for iPhone/Touch today!

schwantz, Monday, 25 October 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

That AR SOT app looks sweet.

schwantz, Monday, 25 October 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

does VLC stream or run media off the device? if the latter, than i am very very interested.

jeff, Monday, 25 October 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

You sync stuff to your phone (using an obscure menu in iTunes) and then you can play your divx rips, etc. I'm going to try it out tonight.

schwantz, Monday, 25 October 2010 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

Haven't tried the iPhone version yet but the iPad one works a treat *except* jumping forward or back a few minutes is a really imprecise, annoying art.

Alba, Monday, 25 October 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

WHAT??? DIVX ON IPHONE?!?!

mother cabrini maxwell (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 25 October 2010 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

Explain please

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 09:16 (fifteen years ago)

app menu in the phone section of itunes, scroll down, you'll see a list of apps that accept file transfers - then just drag and drop the files you want to upload onto the phone

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 12:13 (fifteen years ago)

Jeez

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 12:23 (fifteen years ago)

Tried it out last night. Works fine for SD rips. It wouldn't really play a 720p file. I imagine it is not using the video HW, so the battery life will suffer. Maybe I'm wrong, tho'.

schwantz, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

wondering if my ipad will handle 720p files

dayo, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

Doubt it. The iPhone 4 has more memory and as least as fast a CPU as the iPad.

schwantz, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

noob question. if you have an iphone can you keep docs on the phone (eg a cv) and attach them to emails in mail.app?

let me help you with your screen name problems (cozen), Friday, 29 October 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

candid gamera (s1ocki), Friday, 29 October 2010 20:02 (fifteen years ago)

Cozen: drop box app can send a link to a file, and pages on iPad can email the file, but I haven't seen iPhone equivalent

stet, Friday, 29 October 2010 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

moogfest (it's embedded in this event app)
NLogFree

do you guys have anything else like that (i know dr3w listed some upthread but those are pay and i am cheap!)

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 October 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

thanks stet, seems odd that the iphone can't handle something so simple natively but I guess allowing it wd have other more complicated remifications

cozen, Friday, 29 October 2010 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

*ramifications

cozen, Friday, 29 October 2010 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

I can't remember but did I read something about the Nintendo DS Korg cartridge DS-10 coming to the iPhone? Maybe I'm making it up, but that thing is amazing.

My favorite electronic music app is this little guy, who never fails to crack me up:

You can pretty much do this with FileApp. Transfer files to it through iTunes in the way baaderonixx describes them then email direct from FileApp. Doesn't go through mail.app as such, but I don't suppose that's essential to you. Is that what you wanted?

Alba, Friday, 29 October 2010 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

GameDev Story is totally worth it, if I haven't made that clear yet

Jaw dropping, thong dropping monster (kingfish), Saturday, 30 October 2010 04:48 (fifteen years ago)

I am totally not going anywhere near that thing. Unless the price falls below $3 maybe.

Shallots Are As Good As Joyce Brothers (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 30 October 2010 04:49 (fifteen years ago)

it costs the same as a pint. do it do it do it.

do it just for the puns.

Does anybody know of a fun abstract visual/musical app? I'd love something for Louis to play with.

I tried the Eno app but it's not quite what I'm looking for.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 30 October 2010 08:45 (fifteen years ago)

Just something where you can create cool tracings of light with your fingers or something.

Try Line Art for visual

Alba, Saturday, 30 October 2010 10:13 (fifteen years ago)

And maybe Soundrop more for audio:

Both are free I think.

Alba, Saturday, 30 October 2010 10:15 (fifteen years ago)

be-bot. he makes bleeping and blooping noises and sings when you touch him. And you can change the sounds and tuning and effects. And he's really cute.

dan selzer, Saturday, 30 October 2010 12:23 (fifteen years ago)

Wow awesome you guys.

my phone's speaker is dead so for now I think Line Art is going to be amazing.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 30 October 2010 13:15 (fifteen years ago)

do any of you use an alarm clock other than the preloaded onboard one?

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 31 October 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Sunday, 31 October 2010 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

I wanna try that but I'm afraid of knocking my phone off the bed

GyroSynth
Theremin-like, lots of options, works great on the iPhone 4.

after quickly losing interest in Evernote, I am now playing around with Springpad which seems to be clearer and more straightforward. Has anyone been using it?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Saturday, 20 November 2010 09:56 (fifteen years ago)

simplenote is my jam tbh

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Saturday, 20 November 2010 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

bummed to find that simplify was purchased by google and is now dead for the iphone. any other good ways to stream your itunes library to your iphone?

jeff, Saturday, 20 November 2010 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

If you've got AirFoil on your computer then Airfoil Speakers will do it.

Alba, Saturday, 20 November 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

Doesn't apple's remote app do that? Or are you looking for something else/more?

Clay, Saturday, 20 November 2010 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

i thought the remote just controlled itunes playing on the computer? can you set it up to stream to the phone and bypass the computer speakers?

i ask mainly because i moved to a new loft and the acoustics are all messed up. even though i work right next to the computer, that sound is terrible. i want to send that sound to a home theatre system that has speakers in every room.

jeff, Saturday, 20 November 2010 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

Friend introduced me to Epic Win, which is pretty funny (it's $2.99). It's basically a rolling to-do list, in the form of a quest game. Every time you cross something off the list, you get points and can level-up your character or whatever. Silly, but possibly useful.

a tenth level which features a single castle (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 20 November 2010 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

With remote you can control an iTunes library thats connected to AirTunes, so you'd be able to stream thataway.

Clay, Saturday, 20 November 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i'm kinda looking to not buy more apple shit. though i guess airtunes might also extend my wireless network to my living room. anyone ever use that? is it just as easy as plugging it in in a new room? my xbox doesn't get the best wireless connection in the living room.

jeff, Sunday, 21 November 2010 00:04 (fifteen years ago)

dude airtunes isn't airport express

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Sunday, 21 November 2010 01:18 (fifteen years ago)

it's a program, that jacks audio and sends it something on yr wireless network

cf i use it so to route movie audio to my stereo
