I just finished Season 4 today and basically had the same reaction as Abbott, I assumed I'd dig it more than 3 cuz Lithgow >>>>>> Smits, but I actually found Dexter's dancing with Smits for a whole season a lot more entertaining/gradually rewarding. Was pretty underwhelmed when he finally got around to putting JL on the table.

Yes, through writer contrivance. I just missed it if they established that he had a previous fake happy family before his current one or what.

He seemed so obsessed with family values and having a perfect family that it rang false to me that he would father a child with some woman (or wife?) and then leave.

Seriously, couldn't they have cut a few "I'm disappointed in you, Dexter" scenes with his dad to detail Trinity's backstory? Especially if they're going to make his bastard/abandoned/whothefuckknows daughter such an integral part of the season? It's funny this is the season that got all of the attention/accolades when it easily felt like the sloppiest.

That said, I will never complain about soulful romantic interludes with Sgt. Batista

i think julia stiles sux. she conveys the same "inflection" in her voice whether she is upset, angry..what ever. dexter and companions dont go so smooth...see smits.

That said, I kinda loved the Smits season. maybe I'd been prepped by all the criticism, but it was nice to have Smits actually playing a guy we're supposed to find insufferable and annoying, as opposed to some sexy Supreme Court Justice turned sexy renegade lawyer nonsense.

It seemed like he was inviting Dexter over to dinner more nights of the week than not! Watching Dexter react to that kind of overbearing behavior was pretty awesome imo. Plus they kinda mapped out his character a lot more than they did Trinity, while still leaving some mystery as to just how crazy he was.

although i did love dexters reaction when lumen yelled "fuck you" at him.

I am always surprised by the hate for the Smits season from hardcore Dexter fans. I thought he was great, hilarious, and over the top in a good way. Loved the way he'd yell "Ellen WOLFE!" And he and Dexter's rooftop confrontation was awesome.

Agreed. Her acting in this season so far is pretty tone-deaf - almost as if she's playing the Kristen Wiig parody version of her character.

yeah she's not good. unfortunately, she's not hamming it up enough to be amusing, either, which is the way to go on Dexter.

I just watched this week's episode - not amazing, but at least entertaining in a traditional Dexter action episode. Matsuka had a great moment.

I have to admit I'm a LOT more amused by their romantic screwball team-up than everything Smits. Now that things are happening again in the show it's a lot more tolerable.

Objectively, I don't feel like this show has gotten a lot worse, but the more I watch of this season the more I hate all of it retroactively. I am even turning on characters I once liked, like Deb. It's like I got so pissed at how shitty season four was that it poisoned the whole Dexter universe for me.

baffled, confused and annoyed by the way the writers made laguerta into a sympathetic character then all of a sudden she becomes an incompetent corrupt hateful dick. and convinces the up-and-coming hispanic female cop to join her in her scheme to screw over deb. feels weird, racist and sexist all in one.

i think the scheme was less about screwing over deb and more about saving her own ass.

But it's still a weird turnaround for LaGuerta's character... especially after all the season 3 time spent with her and the defense attorney.

deb is all time most hated for me. awful actress and awful writing.

predict lumen kills robocop and has to flee the state, taking the heat off dexter. I hope she gets killed though.
