making me want to sprint or cry

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Sunday, 17 October 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

when your target pace is too fast, and you start slightly too hard, your actual pacing chart does this red line thingy, more easily viewed as the blue line thingy. the green line is target pace. the yellow line is steady pace equivalent of my actual time.

ran 8k in a downpour today. it was gross but the actual running was weirdly a lot easier, maybe because all i could think was "OMG I AM SO DRENCHED THIS WEATHER IS HIDEOUS" there wasn't any room for my muscles or lungs to complain?

i did overtake someone going up a hill, that was good, though the sheets of rain blinding me made it impossible to tell whether they were an old granny that i shouldn't be proud of overtaking.

pet hates when out running are people who are ignorant of basic etiquette, who make no effort to stand aside so you have room to pass them. have genuinely got into shouting matches because of that in the past.

i feel like this is unnecessary modern anger but god it drives me mental when that happens, today a woman was texting on her phone and looked up and saw me well in advance, she was completely in the way walking towards me on a v narrow street and she just kept texting. she didn't bother attempting to step out of the way, so i had to actually do that sort of staggering stop thing really quickly to avoid just running straight into her. i hate confrontation on the street but i did tell her to look where she's going.

also bikes on the canal...some dude cycled past me on the inside today when i was running under a bridge, no bell, just stealthily a bike just appears about a foot to my left between me and a wall...

also people who walk along the footpath entirely spread out so you can't get past

i luckily missed the downpour in the 45 minute window in between that crazy rain btw lex...

I live next to some awesome running areas but the weekends can be hellish with the number of people walking slowly and the clusters of cyclists as well. I got out of the way for some of the latter a few weeks ago and wound up stepping wrongly in an uneven part of the grass and hurting my ankle, which is still recovering.

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

Got my footpod today! Now if only I could run, I could start tracking my cadence.

Jeff, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

i agree on the congestion issue generally, but will add that hitting the bell on the bike when overtaking peds/runners presents its own risks actually- often when i ring or say 'on your left', it confuses the ped/runner who gets all squirrelly and behaves very unpredictably. ped/runner then moves left, NO RIGHT! SPIN! on busy paths, i always ring though. for little kids, i basically slow to walking, since no amount of explanation's gonna justify hitting a kid and their behavior is basically random.

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

i think the bell is pretty good, can usually tell when the person is about to pass me. mind you i do have headphones in a lot, i usually try and give a glance or two over my shoulder every now and again.

Per doc's orders, I'm out for 2 more weeks. My foot pain that I've had post marathon is just tendinitis. Just need to let it rest. This is going to suck.

Jeff, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

Signed up for the Wisconsin Marathon on May 7th. Really looking forward to this.

Jeff, Thursday, 21 October 2010 01:12 (fifteen years ago)

4.35 miles....longest run yet! felt like i could have kept going too...

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 21 October 2010 10:10 (fifteen years ago)

As a total amateur, I have a blister on my right big toe and on my right index toe. The former was actually created by a bandaid for the latter and bled, but I didn't feel it. This all happened because the elliptical trainer in my apartment building broke and we are waiting for parts. But I liked running instead. It is more taxing. But I haven't had the feeling of blissful exhaustion for ages.

Yesterday I took a walk in East Rock and saw many runners. One person seemed to be running in pain and his muttering and his gait seemed to contradict the picture of health that runners are supposed to represent. I saw two men running and they were talking and on top of the world. I saw a young woman with a black elastic thing all over one of her calves but she seemed steady and determined and not in pain.

youn, Friday, 22 October 2010 22:47 (fifteen years ago)

Running is good for ppl watching. I look at peoples form. There is this woman that runs down my street that runs on her toes. Not just a forefoot runner, her heels never touch the ground. So bizarre. That would kill my arches.

Jeff, Friday, 22 October 2010 23:02 (fifteen years ago)

5.31 miles in 47 minutes, aw yeah!

I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 23 October 2010 11:32 (fifteen years ago)

seeing unorthodox, absolutely bizarre, difficult looking, or even flatly _impossible_ running styles of other people is one of the undeniable charms of running a marathon. what's great is that these are people dropping my ass.

my stomach is full of anger. and pie. (Hunt3r), Saturday, 23 October 2010 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

first run since marathon, 4 miles. considering post event foot pain for 10 days, was totally psyched that run was pain free.

potholes and esso assos (Hunt3r), Saturday, 30 October 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

I can run on Wednesday. This is good news. Will have been 2 weeks. I've only run 36 miles in October. 26 of which was at one time.

Jeff, Saturday, 30 October 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

fair play LG!

ran my first 5k since july this week, and just dropped 120 quid on new balance trainers- kickstart back into it imo

cant believe you sb'd me for that (darraghmac), Sunday, 31 October 2010 13:13 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i got trainers fitted yday, 80 quid.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Sunday, 31 October 2010 13:17 (fifteen years ago)

this is funny to me because when asked afterward how the marathon was, i'd say, "not too bad...except for mile 23 to 24-- that sucked!" they reduced my time by about a minute on the results page.

potholes and esso assos (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

So I didn't run for 18 days because of tendinitis in my foot. But the last 3 days I've gotten out there in it has felt OK. 3 miles on Saturday, 5 miles on Sunday, 1 mile on Monday. The 5 miles felt the best, I just felt like I was dialed into a slow and comfortable pace that I could have held for awhile. Still, I have the ITB pain on the right leg. Shit won't go away. It's been 6 months now.

Having a recorded gait analysis done on Saturday, video to be posted.

Jeff, Thursday, 11 November 2010 01:14 (fifteen years ago)

im sorry to hear about itb. the answer has to be out there, hope gait analysis helps.

potholes and esso assos (Hunt3r), Thursday, 11 November 2010 03:55 (fifteen years ago)

Been out of action for a while with a chest infection...itching to go again but the infection came on the day of a run so I prob should hold off.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 11 November 2010 10:03 (fifteen years ago)

weather has been so totally awesome as of late that i just really have nothing to say
my neighbor (female, croatian) complimented my legs two days ago, that's gotta be worth something

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Thursday, 11 November 2010 21:11 (fifteen years ago)

Run Through Winding Wooded Trails, steep gullies, foot bridges, small streams, fallen trees, dramatic Cedar Forest and beautiiful natural wetlands.

Who in this bitch is getting a video gait analysis today? ME. I'm going to add a bitching soundtrack to it.

Jeff, Saturday, 13 November 2010 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

if they ask you to trot canter and gallop, you're in the wrong joint.

potholes and esso assos (Hunt3r), Saturday, 13 November 2010 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

i think i found the right road shoe *joy*. never thought i'd be excited about that. of course, new balance already doesn't make it anymore, but i can buy like 3 pairs for later i guess.

potholes and esso assos (Hunt3r), Saturday, 13 November 2010 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know if I mentioned it before, but I'm running in Newton Gravitas Trainers now. I like them a lot so far. No idea what they are doing for my form, but they feel great while running.

Jeff, Saturday, 13 November 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

Here's a poll! Running during winter time -- does this sound sane?
I've been doing this, more or less regularly, for years, despite the constant "hunch" of being considered a running geek, hmm.

Mart, Saturday, 13 November 2010 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

I hope to run more this winter. I signed up for a spring marathon, so I better be running leading up to it.

Jeff, Saturday, 13 November 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

can I plug in a training program to dailymile and track it as I go along or is there a program that can do that, with graphs and shit? or should I just go pen and paper

cozen, Saturday, 13 November 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

I love winter running! "Winter" here usually meaning temperatures in the 50s. But I've done it in the 30s, too... all I need is a buff to keep my ears covered and sweatpants.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 13 November 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

It's fine until it snows, I have no idea how to run in the snow. Happily this is (usually) only a problem for a few days each year here.

seandalai, Saturday, 13 November 2010 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

Running in the snow is surprisingly fine. Ice is less so - aim for a grassy park where snow settles, rather than a street that hardens to ice. Also, if you're not a regular runner, you have to believe that 30 degrees is better than 80.

Don't wear trackpants, even if it's in the 20s. They slow you down, the bottoms get wet, if it rains you'll freeze. Shorts are better, but long legged running pants are best. Similarly, a sweatshirt isn't great. a wicking fleece is better. The most key things are woolen hat and gloves - your trunk / mid-section will be surprisingly OK even in sub-zero temps, as long as your extremities aren't suffering.

I did 25 miles last weekend (14 + 11). I tried to pick up speed but came in at my usual time. Oh well.

paulhw, Saturday, 13 November 2010 23:33 (fifteen years ago)

Which is all to say that:
- shorts & tshirt + gloves & hat is > no gloves, no hat, sweatshirt & sweatpants.

paulhw, Saturday, 13 November 2010 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

Tights are where it's at. Also, I'll take 80 over 30 degrees any day.

Jeff, Saturday, 13 November 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

today i did 40 min run at 40 degrees in shorts and medium weight wicking long sleeve, plus gloves. perfect.

potholes and esso assos (Hunt3r), Sunday, 14 November 2010 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

^^ ideal conditions IMO

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Sunday, 14 November 2010 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

Update: Saw my orthopedist last week and got my third cortisone shot. This will be my 6th month dealing with this injury. If I can ever get healthy I am going to be awesome. Got a half coming up in January, full and a 10 miler in May. I want to destroy them all.

Jeff, Saturday, 20 November 2010 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

garmin connect "enhances" its site by using bing shitmaps instead of google, takes away all the fun of google earth integrated maps. nice job, garmin.

potholes and esso assos (Hunt3r), Saturday, 20 November 2010 22:58 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

went out this morning to test myself -- radio said it was 14 degrees, windchill -3
i lived, and it wasn't all *that* bad so i have high hopes for enduring my second winter

i miss 40 degrees, but this will do i guess?

ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Monday, 6 December 2010 14:24 (fifteen years ago)

Running in the snow is surprisingly fine. Ice is less so

yeah otm. well, running in the snow can be quite intense, like running in heavy rain, but doable, and you'll feel smug afterwards.

getting cold or wet isn't really an issue, if anything it makes me run faster, but i always get a horrible snotty nose when running in the cold that makes breathing kind of an issue :(

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Monday, 6 December 2010 14:36 (fifteen years ago)

ran a 4:18 marathon-distance training run this saturday (2 days ago) for kicks

feel fantastic

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Monday, 6 December 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

I'm contemplating taking the rest of the year off. But that would leave me no base come January which would be when I have to start training for Wisconsin.

Of course I won't have a base anyway if I continue to experience ITBS issues. Month 7 of it!!! Might as well go for a full year of annoyance.

Jeff, Monday, 6 December 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

Good thing is I've been focusing on diet in the last couple months and am down about 13 pounds. That feels good because I steadily gained weight the whole time I was training for the marathon.

Jeff, Monday, 6 December 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

man it's so fucking cold lately, v hard to go for a run in this. also had a chest infection about a month ago and i've been full of fucking mucous since, my weird chronic health probs mean i'm finding my breathing gets really laboured after 3 miles or so, even tho physically i feel well able to keep going to what had become my usual 5/6 miles. guess i just have to take it easy till i feel better.

do you guys wear hats/gloves etc? what about scarves?

on the plus side everyone i know is saying i've lost weight and look healthy and stuff, so that's cool.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

i've just got back from a run. so. fucking. cold.

i wear shorts/long-sleeved winter running top/gloves in weather like this.

feeling you on the mucus - it's so so hard to run well when you have crap streaming out of your nose. i don't have an infection or anything, though i've always had shitty sinuses - it's just the temperature causing it. 10 minutes back inside and my nose is 100% back to normal.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

Just a hat that covers the ears and gloves. I can't imagine running with a scarf, would just get too hot.
